There are fanboy's in everything. Coming from nothing but PC's I'm very glad to have partially switched to Apple. I'm so tired of worrying about Virus's, pop-ups [even with Firfeox ABP], crashing, etc. I picked up my MBP Tuesday, and while I don't fully get everything I'm slowly starting to pick it up. I don't know enough about computers to make a vaild arguement, but as of now I am definitely satisified with Apple products and don't plan on looking back. Now time to save up for a iMac. :p

Well Windows in the most popular platform and will probably stay for a long time.

Mac too has sone maleware floating around...

Utter crap.

Dell Inspiron 545/8707
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
Quad Core Processor
Genuine Windows Vista (R) Home Premium
4GB Memory
500GB Hard Drive
£499. (Including monitor, keyboard, mouse)

A Mac Mini, with half the cores, half the ram, a smaller hard drive, and no monitor, keyboard or mouse?

£150 more.

Seriously - it's spouting this sort of nonsense that gets Mac users a bad name.

Stop pretending that the Mac Mini is anything other than outrageously expensive. It's an OBSCENE price. Probably the worst rip-off in the entire Mac stable.

The Mac Mini has its place. Its small, fits anywhere, silent, looks good, and is plenty powerful. Its not always about specs. Depends on your needs.

Besides HTPC and underpowered desktop what purpose does the Mac mini serve then? You're better off getting a refurbished MacBook.

Yeah.... not. With discount, the Mac Mini is $550. I have one at work and at home. It has support for dual displays (an absolute MUST for home and work, how can I do that with a Macbook?), 5 USB ports for all of my peripherals, costs less than a Macbook (about half), and is powerful enough.

Keep in mind that I said the refurbished MacBook. You have to add the display and input devices to the price of the Mac mini and it's not portable with a self contained battery.

Again, at work I *NEED* dual displays. I have 2 Cinema Displays hooked up, now how would I do that with a laptop? Explain this to me.

Only with the most recent Mac mini or in light of this thread install a video card. Oh wait...

The iMac ends up on the crippled video out list as well.

I don't game. I program, so the Mac Mini, with dual display output is perfect for me. Its plenty powerful, and it suits my needs just fine.

What would you have done if the Mac mini still only had one video out then?

Would have kept using the PowerMac G5 that I was using as it is still plenty powerful for coding. But what kind of question is that? It does exist, thats the point.

Were you expecting it to exist then?

I don't get your point, this Mini revision has been out for a while now, and no Apple customer expects anything to exist, but it DOES exist so I replaced my G5 with it and it suits my needs perfectly, end of story.

What would you have done if the Power Mac G5 had stopped working without a dual video output Mac mini?

Probably the reason why Windows users hate Macs is bad experience with the machines themselves or with the users.

Reminds me of the time when I was using 10.2 (just came out) and Netscape - one of my hardcore PC user friends came over and Netscape crashed on him. He went into a whole lecture about how I should have bought a PC and used Internet Explorer ... no wonder Apple ended up writing their own browser.

All the Mac users I have met are just great so no bad experiences for me there :p

If I was in the market for a new computer right now Apple would be way, way down my list. The reason for this is cost effectiveness - there used to be a time when Apple's software justified the high price tag, but since Leopard released they have been on a path that is leading them in completely the wrong direction.

In my experience, Windows users don't hate Macs, they just can't understand why people would buy them. With Windows 7 now looking like it is at least better than Leopard (who knows about Snow Leopard) I'm starting to see their point.

You are starting to see their point? Rather, don't you fully agree with that point?

It's clear to me that you don't choose to use Apple. Fair enough. I don't like beets, other people love them. I don't badmouth beet-eaters though.

BTW, it is my considered opinion that Leopard will remain better than Windows 7, SL notwithstanding. "Better" being defined as "better for my needs".

Explain how Leopard is going down the wrong path and how Windows 7 is better than Leopard. I am intrigued.

Well, I would have grab the second PowerMac G5 I have and used that. I don't see your point.
I'm not sure what sort of deep meaning or even a hostile intent you're trying to draw from my questions. I'm only curious and don't see a point to your defensiveness. I can't read your mind so I have to ask.

Thanks for answering my questions.

Well you are asking what if questions with absolutely no point (as far as I can tell). You ask "what if the Mac mini didn't come out?" "What if your G5 died?" What kind of questions are those?

What if the wheel was never invented? What if the world imploded? See how random those questions are? I don't get where you were leading me, you were just asking me random questions about my use of a computer that can use dual displays. I was confused, not defensive :)

Its not always about specs. Depends on your needs.

And we all need to get utterly shafted with an underpowered machine for £650, right? The top spec Mac Mini needs to be £300 and not a penny more. Hell, they only just got rid of the combo drive.

This is the attitude that lets Apple continue the rip off quite so badly. Roll over and tickle me Steve - and have another few hundred pounds while you're at it.

Oh my, while I was browsing Apple for accessories for my new Mac. I got the BSOD. Is Microsoft secretly watching my computer?:D:D

Explain how Leopard is going down the wrong path and how Windows 7 is better than Leopard. I am intrigued.

Tiger is the only thing you need to consider here. Since 2005 Microsoft have made HUGE improvements to their software. Since 2005 Apple have gone in completely the opposite direction, taking their OS from the pinnacle of speed and stability to the point where program hangs, crashes and kernel panics are much more common.

You only need to use Windows 7 for a few minutes to realise just how much faster it is than Leopard. You can launch software and it's running instantly, whereas on Leopard you'd be staring at the icon bouncing in the dock. Additionally, as someone who works with graphics, the extra GPU power which Windows has really helps me. Until Apple sorts out the mess that is 3D rendering under OS X it will always be behind to me.

As someone who uses both Leopard (2 Mac mini's, a Macbook Pro, 2 PowerMac G5's, and a Macbook Air), as well as Windows 7, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Maybe you are comparing a fresh install of Windows 7 to a very old install of Leopard. Windows gets slow over time, thats a well known fact. And honestly, on my systems applications open fast, I don't get kernel panics, and the operation is smooth. And I use Leopard on 6 systems. So maybe its you?
