I would be buying a new 17"er with all the trimmings, but I notice that Apple stuck a low end GPU into all the MBPs, with no option to upgrade to something less anemic. Why is Apple making it so native-resolution gaming is only possible, and I say this loosely, on the iMac? Did video games kill Apple's parents, forcing them to become BadGPUman?

??

The 6750M is a high-end GPU.

What's sad is that Apple continues to give MBPs TN panels instead of going IPS, like how they do for the iPads and MacBook Air. It'd be nice to rely on the laptop's monitor exclusively; I know MBP's color gamut is better than the bulk of laptops, but it's still TN. Even a 6-bit e-IPS monitor is going to fare better with color than almost any TN panel.

I dont really get it...
apple does what they do for PROFITS
Solely profits

Apple is owned by shareholders
Shareholders want profits

The decisions that are made for all of these computers are complex decision to maximize profits

That is the answer. Profits are neither evil nor good - they are the MISSION of a publicly traded company

Ah, but how the profits are achieved is where the qualifiers of "good" and "evil" come into play. Just like technology; technology itself is neither good nor evil. How it is used is what matters.

Couldn't Apple have provided an OPTION to upgrade from 6750?

I mean if a person is going for the 17 inch, they are worried about price.

So why not have an option for a higher gpu?

Would the heat/watt be too much of a problem?

Just wondering...

AMD 6750 is low-end? you have to be joking.

Troll thread.

Air uses a TN screen last i checked...good TN screen but still a TN screen.

Buy it and return it if you dont like it. Simple as that. I have no idea why people complain before even trying it out.

Oh, 6750 is a great GPU!
And then, my advice: buy a PS3 (just about 300 - 400$), but it handles ALL NEW GAMES WITH FULL HD and WONDERFUL GRAPHICS!
And then, there are a lot of exclusive games for consoles, especially for Sony!
Just go for it if you enjoy gaming, or buy a huge and hot Acer/Asus (if wanna to play games on the go).
And... Just give it up! There are a lot of things to do in this world: enjoy them 2gether with your MBP ;)

My *expletive deleted* livelihood relies on OS X only software. Before you say "get two laptops", we are not all $100k earners. I can barely afford one laptop.

In that case, you should be purchasing the machine that will best suit your work requirements instead of making such a big deal about its gaming prowess.

What`s more important to you, your business or your games??

I also think that buying a laptop for gaming purposes is a waste of time and money.
PC gaming is rapidly becoming a minority sport anyway, consoles having effectively destroyed most of their market/advantages.
The days of having to spend £300 or so on new graphics cards etc every damn year just to play the latest games are, thankfully, coming to an end.
FFS, spend £150 on a 360 and get on with your life.

Stop building strawmen and knocking them down.

Benchmarks show that the 6750M gets unplayable framerates at 1920x1200 on many modern games! So if all you want to play is old stuff from a few years ago, you will be running at much, much lower than native resolutions, like 1280x768.

Unplayable? Benchmarks and personal experience show I can play black ops and crysis 2 at ~50-70FPS on a external 23" monitor at 1920x1080. Is that unplayable? I mean the monitor in the MBP and indeed most external monitors is 60Hz so you don't need anything better?

Not many laptop GPU capable of 1900 x 1200....

Agreed.

Or the laptop itself having that resolution, much less the video card. Which is admittedly nice to have when there's no other monitor available...

Only one other laptop in a store I've seen had 1920x1080p or higher, and that was the Sony Vaio VPCF115fm/b. Not a bad model for a PC laptop, in terms of resolution, but the screen quality itself (color gamut, shadow detail) was horrible.

Thx for the clarification! The guy at BB thought the Air had an IPS panel, which floored me. (Air but not the MBP?!)

And as far as TN panels go, Apple has used the best since 2009... Precise editing still requires IPS, but I feel more comfortable around MBP screens than I do any other model.

I don't think you understand what that saying means.

Haha.. There's a guy at work that says "quick po quo" and thinks it means short status update. I guess to him it does, since he's not actually saying "quid pro quo".

Regarding the Straw Man, can you imagine if forum software automatically flagged fallacious arguments by type and also improper use of phrases?

Once again, stop making strawmen and knocking them down. I am not talking about the nVidia GTX OVER9000M here, I just want something where I can play games without wasting the wonderful screen I am paying for.

My *expletive deleted* livelihood relies on OS X only software. Before you say "get two laptops", we are not all $100k earners. I can barely afford one laptop.

I won't tell you to get two laptops, but I do think you need to get your priorities in order.

In one post you claim to want to PLAY GAMES.

In another post you claim to want to use if for INCOME GENERATION.

I dunno, but I would think you could pick one of those two as a priority and run with it.

does lenovo hate its thinkpad users? these are some serious business grade laptops and you cant find a high end gpu in them? why? hmm maybe they are not for gaming.

Computers, like cars, or anything else have certain purposes, luckily pc desktops can be recomissioned to do almost any task but macs take that liberty away for a better built system apple asks you to trust them to build you the best system possible and you relinquish the ability to modify them, just the way apple runs things. You cant buy a macbook pro for gaming at least not hardcore gaming you will be able to play all modern games but not at native res max settings and high fps. just like you dont buy a honda fit or toyota prius for maximum horsepower comparable to a lambo or such. one is for play the other is to just get you where you have to go.

I understand you livelihood may depend on OSX and apple does cost a lot. So do the responsible thing buy the mac you need for work and save up and build yourself a budget gaming rig desktop you can do so for a few hundred bucks easy. that or just buy an xbox or playstation for gaming.

But seriously apple does not hate MBP users they are just not built for gaming there are many windows pc's that are the same way. you have to buy what is built for your needs.

There are a lot of things I could complain about...the economy, women, Europeans, Charlie Sheen........but the GPU in my 15 is not one of them :p

They might simply not have better GPUs simply because the power supply would not be able to handle that kind of draw.

An 85 watt AC adapter is not acceptable for a high end laptop that handles gaming. Most laptops that are used for gaming use a 120 or 130 watt adapter. HP dv6 with quad core sandy bridge and 6770 have a 120 watt adapter. Dell XPS 15 with the nvidia 540m graphics have a 130 watt adapter (for some reason the xps 15 i bought with the 525m cam with this adapter-- also two weeks early even though I told them to ship it to me on a certain date. The model with the 525m should have a 90 watt adapter. Chalk this up to poor customer service).

The quad core processor has a maximum draw or 45 watts and the graphics card (6750) around 30-35 watts. That is 75-80 watts for those two components alone, not counting the display, hard drive, RAM, etc.

The adapter can barely cover that and will heat up like crazy, not to mention that you should not run components at over 80% capacity as this will really put wear on them.

This does not count dissipation which is around 30% or the heat given off by adapter (which will not be as efficient when running at a high percentage of its capacity, its heating up is proof of that).

So while heat may be an issue, power draw is also one.

The 6750 is quite a good card but on that high a resolution...

Just my two cents.

Not all of us have constant income.

The buy a PC laptop when you have more income.

Sorry, but it seem too me this is very clearly a toll thread. You have an iMac, MacBook Air and MBP 2010? And you looking to buy a 2011 MBP?

I'm sure you could find a way to balance the "need' for a better gaming laptop and a new laptop for work if you sold some of your Macs. Or you could just boot into Windows to game. The GPU there will get better performance regardless.

FYI, since the OP brought up "rendering." Maya and Motion Builder are able to handle 2-3 characters with a 148 bone rig and maintain a workable frame rate in the viewport. Maya is ~ 40 fps and Motion Builder is ~ 130 fps bootcamped in Win7. I would prefer a Quadro though but the chances of that are slim to none.

Gaming is just one part. What about 3D rendering people? My brother does this, and he needs to rerender stuff when on the road to show his work to potential investors. Why should he have to bring a Mac Pro or buy a windows laptop and hackintosh it?

All I am asking is for something at least on par with the GTS 360M. That is not asking much. Form above function? Then I guess apple would just have the IGP on the SB die.

It is not like I am some PC fanboi wanting to troll, I am typing this on my iMac next to my Macbook Air and 2010 MBP.

Um... Buy a Mac Pro instead? Geez - it appears that people have gone to some length to make suggestions and recommendations to you, only to have you proceed to hypothetically kick them in the gonads for it. If you don't like the 17" MBP, don't buy one - but don't bully the members of MacRumors, who seem just to be trying to help you, despite your apparent lack of any gratitude (or indeed, human decency).
