I had the same problem with apps crashing as well. I left Android after 4 years since people swore that iOS was more stable than Android. What a joke. I traded my 5s for a Note 3.

I don't understand how such a primitive OS on a phone can lag so much. No multitasking and its STILL this terrible? Apple buried themselves here.. I think Android's finally the clear winner and its not by Google's own accomplishments.

iOS is unstable and doesn't have multitasking.

Folks, welcome to MacRumors.

Because it's iOS7.

More accurately, because it's iOS 7 on the 5s. The 4s, 5, and 5c don't have these issues. Basically, iOS is unstable on 64-bit ARMv8.

Apple is in decline. It's sad, but they don't seem to care about quality like they used to.

Certainly a bit odd that it would be less stable on the hardware for which it was essentially specifically designed for.

Agreed. I don't see how they can back away from the bad design decisions made in iOS 7.

I'm hoping it's just because it's a new platform and they'll work out the kinks. Without technical details it's a WAG for me to say that backwards compatibility for apps and poorly implemented apps are the largest part of the issue.

been using the 5s and never had a single problem.

like they say~ you're holding it wrongly :)
Well, I don't have a 5S, so I can't really tell one way or another. But, we've certainly all seen our share of all kinds of issues that affect some but not so much others, and yet they aren't always something that the user caused or is responsible for. Even the. "You are holding it wrong" was still a design oversight on Apple's part that they worked on to correct in future hardware.

Never had a device (iPhone 5s) that crashed so much. Apps crash constantly and once every couple of weeks the entire phone crashes and goes to white boot logo.

I should of kept my iPhone 5. But not sure if its the phone or the ios. Ugh I'm just venting. Is there going to be a fix for this?

The fix will be called iOS 8 lol

Passbook Crash

Every time I use my AMEX card and get a passbook notification on my lock screen, swiping it crashes the phone (white screen, black apple logo) EVERY time.

I never have had my 5s crash and I didn't do a clean restore or any of the other "tricks". I have great battery life, etc.
I don't know why but some of us have great phones and great experiences and some don't. But no one should assume their experiences are what all face.

*shrug* Works fine on my 5s. Got it a few days after launch. Any apps that have been updated for iOS7 work great — some that haven't been updated can have trouble, but what do you expect? Haven't restored or anything; just set it up out of the box with my iCloud backup from iOS7 beta on my old iPhone 4.

When an iPhone "crashes" to a black screen with the Apple logo it's called a "repspring". With the iPhone 5S, it is usually associated with using Touch ID. You wake up the phone, put your finger on Touch ID, the phone unlocks and the very instant you go to touch ANY app icon, the phone resprings (black screen with Apple logo).

This topic suggests the iPhone 5S respring problem goes away if you turn the Reduce Motion feature OFF:

I've been having the problem with 5S and I had Reduce Motion turned ON. Lots of resprings (three in a row yesterday alone). I've turned Reduce Motion OFF and I'll see how it goes.

Obviously, the Reduce Motion setting would explain why some people are seeing the problem and others are not. I'd gamble that most people have Reduce Motion turned OFF (the default).

I've found it's when you react quickly to the phone.

For example, if the iPhone is locked and I receive a message and I instantly unlock the phone to read the message, it will crash.

Try it and let me know.

Thank you for the extra information. As an FYI I'll say my Reduce Motion has always been turned on and I'm not having the issue. It doesn't mean they aren't related, it just that there's probably also something else in the mix.

Yes, it does seem that touching the phone quickly has something to do with it. Meaning, when I unlock the iPhone (using Touch ID) and then IMMEDIATELY touch one of the app icons. I've never had it respring when I'm in the middle of already using the phone. Only when I first unlock it.

I visited the Genius Bar today and the Apple Genius pulled the diagnostics from my phone onto his iPad. He found evidence of a lot of different apps crashing and said it definitely wasn't a hardware issue (no Panic.plist files). Although he was somewhat evasive about how often he sees complaints about this respringing issue, he did comment about the fact that they've seen some repeat bugs popping up with various versions of iOS 7. He said Apple will quash a bug in, say, 7.0.2, it will remain quashed in 7.0.3, and then the bug rears its ugly head again in 7.0.4. He said that 7.1 is in beta (which I already knew) and he believed it would take care of a lot of the issues users are seeing.

At this point, I'm just going to leave Reduce Motion turned off. The phone hasn't respringed all day long, despite my attempts to make it do so. Hopefully, that will get me to 7.1 without too much hassle.

Did it ever occur to you that you might have a duff unit? Or some doozy apps that bugger things up? Or that you have quite a bit of time left to take your complaints directly to Apple Support?

Do you suppose for one moment there are tens of millions of users struggling with the 'constant' crashes that you mention? Hint: they are not.

I'm glad I've found someone that knows what I'm talking about! Yes, it's exactly what happens. When using Touch ID and then hitting an icon, that is when it crashes. In my head, I knew it wasn't a hardware issue (some people on here are saying it is) and I'm confident in iOS 7.1, it will be fixed as I'm sure Apple have received many bug reports about iOS 7 crashing.

Oh, I have Reduce Motion off as well and it still crashes. I received a text earlier and went to unlock it instantly and it crashed, it then booted up again, I then went to Messages and it crashed again! I had to leave it a few seconds before clicking Messages for it not to crash! It's very annoying!

Safari and serveral other apps crash at least twice a day. Defective phone or iOS 7 issue?

"Why does iOS 7 crash so much?"

Well, in my experience, on my iPhone 5, it doesn't!

I've never experienced a crash with any version of iOS. Never. I can't imagine what some people must be doing to make this wonderfully robust and secure operating system misbehave. But I'd guess it's not approved by Apple such as rooting or jailbreaking.
