Who uses the YouTube app to view vids anyways? I think YouTube mobile is far better. I can even watch most YouTube vids native on the full desktop site since most vids are converted nowadays.
If you click a YouTube link online or in another app, it automatically opens in the YouTube app.

If you disable the YouTube app to stop this from happening, it stops embedded videos working on a lot of sites.

I also like to use the app because it always stays signed into my account, whereas I have to keep signing in if I'm using Safari.

And the website doesn't support features like playlists, continuous playback etc. Not that the app does either, but it seems like it would be much easier for an app to implement than the site.

True about link going to app. I hate that.

Why do you have to keep signing in? Do you clear cookies? I'm able to stay signed in for good on Safari, on mobile and desktop versions.

Yes. It's quicker to clear cookies than it is to sign out of multiple websites, and some websites don't sign out properly, so clearing cookies is the only option.

No. I want apple to keep the YouTube app. I use it daily and think it is just fine. If apple makes improvements than that's great but just because a few people don't like the app doesn't mean the rest of us have to suffer.

The great thing about iOS is there are other options if you don't like stock apps. As far as YouTube app goes if you don't like it use the browser version that others in this thread speak of and just hide the YouTube app.

Just disable it in the Restriction Settings. The Web App is better anyway unless you want to upload something, you can as a workaround mail Videos to your Youtube acc.

This also disables embedded videos on many websites, not just the app.

The one big thing I wish they'd put in the YouTube application is a way to view someone's account page (taking out the customizations Partners get, of course). It's kind of annoying having to go to a random video by that person, then clicking the more from segment, not to mention until recently, it never seemed to load more than a couple of pages of that. This would also have playlists in there (the whole queueing and auto-playing isn't as important personally for me, just being able to see a list of videos in the playlist is good enough).

the youtube app does indeed suck but i refuse to use webapps such as youtube mobile when there is a dedicated app for it. So I will continue to use the youtube app.

Apple will eventually remove their YouTube app and let Google do their own. When Google does release their own it will likely just be a wrapper around the HTML version.

Excessive Youtube users like me who uses the Youtube app all the time on my iPhone would rage. Just like many others I know. Youtube may not be one of the most used app but many certainly use it from time to time.

It's Apple that makes the YouTube app on iOS, and it's pretty bad. Hopefully an overhaul is in the works.

If you're jailbroken check out ProTube, it's got subscriptions, top rated comments, pretty much everything desktop YouTube has, except with a few more features like downloading a YouTube video for offline viewing.

http://www.redmondpie.com/protube-the-ios-youtube-app-as-it-should-have-been-download-it-now/

Plus it's compatible with iOS 6, if you've got an A4 device.
ProTube is just the YouTube mobile website embedded in an app with the ability to download videos, MP3s, etc., it's quite useful for that, but otherwise it's no better than the website afaik.

One thing that Google can do is to stop putting the 480p quality videos in flash format. That way when trying to watch a video using the mobile site, I can choose from more options other than "HD" (which takes forever to load) and "2001 cell phone" SD which makes watching videos a joke. I try using the desktop website, but I keep getting "This video is unavailable" on most of the videos.

I just want more resolution options, regardless how its implemented. If I were at home with my awesome internet I wouldn't care. But being that I'm overseas at the moment, video resolution options become more important.

Or just update the app so it isn't the same app from 5 years ago...

Lock the YouTube app in ios restrictions and it will force safari to use the mobile version in html5, much better.

You sir are a genius. Thank you. I've never thought of this. Mobile web version is much better. Hopefully embedded videos not playing won't be missed much.

Apple's growing animosity towards google makes an update seem rather unlikely IMO.

I hear ya'll but its not like Apple has a YouTube replacement.

For Maps they did.

YouTube...everyone uses YouTube. They need to think outside their box. If Google is smart, they would release a youtube app for the App Store like Chrome and probably in the future, Google Maps as well.

Apple should just be smart and release it first.

people actually use the youtube app? i think the only things i use less are newstand and the stocks app.

I wish I thought of it, but I read it on the web from someone else who read it on the web ;)

Not an exact replacement, but maybe, just maybe, Apple believes they have something close enough: podcasts. I mean when you strip away all the pirated content and game footage, most YouTube videos are rather akin to podcast material. So perhaps the introduction of a dedicated Podcast app is actually part of a long term goal to try and shift iOS user's focus away from YouTube. Who knows, iOS 7 could introduce the ability to publish video or audio podcasts directly from your device to an iCloud-based host.

I don't both with the app myself because the webapp is much more refined.

What i would like to see is access to videos higher than 720p res on the new iPad.

They're well aware of the app itself needing a refinement, and surely they're saving this one for iOS 7 which is why i was bitterly disappointed with the iOS 6 features collectively.

Rationing of features has become a trait in recent years...

The app needs better search features. On the desktop app I'm able to search by upload date, ratings, HD, etc. Many more options than the iOS app.

If Google is in charge of the app, why in the world would they help make the iPhone better now?

If Apple is in charge of the app, why in the world would they help Google gain popularity?

The app plays videos, for me it's fine but I can see why it may suck for others. Apple can still say their phone can view youtube videos, even if it's sub-par to Androids.
