Heck, I use a Android phone and I would rather use the browser based mobile YouTube then the YouTube app, its just as garbage on Android as it is on iOS. it can hardly handle posting comments, let alone reply to someone. Heck you can't remove users posts, you cant edit or remove your posts. You can't block or report a user. You can't view annotations, you can't click on what you don't see. A lot of content is blocked or disabled for mobile users. The app is buggy and slow, you run into video stalls constantly even if it hasn't reached the buffers Max. When you fully buffer a video and you slide the time back it has to rebuffer.

But when it boils down to it I can switch user agents to desktop mode and view YouTube as if I was on a desktop to get around these limitations, but flash is a limitation in itself.

It's not Google that builds iOS' YouTube app, it's Apple.

And yes, it is severely outdated, you cannot even load all of your subscriptions in the list.

"Why doesn't Apple remove youtube to force google to make a decent one?" I don't think he implied that. He wants Google to make one for the App Store and Apple to remove theirs.

My biggest, BIGGEST pet peeve with the YouTube app is the sharing option. Maybe I am totally overlooking the option to SMS a link to someone, so if you care to point me in the right direction I'd be forever grateful. My phone only shows three options under Share Video: Add to Favorites, Mail Link to this Video, and Tweet. Why is there no SMS option, or option to just copy the link? I'd say about 95% of my correspondence with friends and family are via text message, not e-mail. I don't even have e-mail addresses for most of my friends.

Instead, you have to use the Mail Link option, copy and paste the link, then go back to your Messages app and paste the link. This is a pain. They added the option to Tweet a link, so I don't see why they didn't include a Message option, especially since they seemed so proud of iMessage.

Of course that would imply that Google would be interested in developing said app. Given that YouTube already works just fine in browser I doubt that they would even bother with it.

I know that Apple is the maker of the current app.

What I am suggesting is that Apple removes the current youtube app

I think google will not take a long time before releasing a youtube app for the ios

Google should be the maker of youtube app not apple

Think Google wants to build something for iOS? After the injunction against the Nexus? And after apple removed Google maps?

Good Luck with that.

Why wouldn't they? Ofcourse Google wants to keep collecting info from everything & everywhere possible. Google would make an app for Satan himself if requested.

They have an app for just about everything else.

Except there would be no way for people to use the theoretical app like you would with the app the way it was. It would largely be a waste from my perspective since the principal thing you do with youtube is just watching a video.

Lets assume that Apple kills the app. Youtube links would have to go to the web - there would be nowhere else for it to go to just like any other URL. Unless you can change the behavior of links out there, you are going to be stuck with safari anyhow. None of Googles apps rely on other web links like YouTube. Google Voice is self contained, gmail is totally optional... Not even Google earth can be called externally. I bet it would be seen as a waste since right now Google can accomplish its needs with no work.

I agree - the YouTube iOS app is just pathetic. The HTML mobile version is better but it's still crippled.

Of course, if Apple removes the YouTube app, Google could demand Apple stop using Google Maps for the iPhone. So, there are consequences that have to be considered...

Remove it after Apple launches iOS 6?

lol that would be pretty funny

In case somebody hasn't yet heard the great news: Apple removes the YT app from iOS 6.

I have simply removed the YT app from my iPhone (via disabling it under the Restrictions settings). It simply doesn't cut it:

1. You can share a video on Twitter but not on Facebook (if Apple wanted to be that funny, they should have let us share on MySpace instead of to Twitter)

2. Music videos are NOT accessible from the YT app (or at least do not show up in search) - I am not sure if this is global or depends on the location. Music videos show up and play perfectly from Safari's mobile version of YT. Go figure!

Time to go, wonderful YT App! :)

Now that it's gone, what are everyone's thoughts?

Personally I think the YouTube experience on the iPad is terrible now without the App.

But at least for people who were already "disabling" it via restrictions, sites with embedded YouTube will now work correctly. (many did not, as certain way of embedding the video acknowledged the YouTube block)

The app always sucked. I only use it to add one of my newly uploaded videos to one of my playlists. I can't do that with their mobile HTML site.

It always sucked and Google is going to make a better one. So i'd say: pure WIN.

I donʼt know, aside from the lack of playlist support, the app seemed fine to me.

The mobile site is cluttered, and is only useful for playing back videos. (rather than rating them, building a playlist, adding favorites etc.)

If Google release their own app, hopefully it will have playlist support, but I wouldnʼt be surprised if Apple continues to direct YouTube links to Safari rather than passing them on to the app as they used to do, which means that no matter how good Googleʼs new app is, it will be wasted effort, because users are never going to see it.

The only bad side now is that the app will be Googleified (read: ads!)
What leads you to believe this? I can't recall seeing ads in the GMail, Earth or + apps...

Starting to wish we had OS level google authentication like FB and Twitter. Wishful dreaming, I know.

Reader sync
GMail app
Chrome app
G+ app
Drive app
Upcoming Maps and Youtube app.

Each have to log into separately, pull up my authenticator and do two-step. It's starting to be a real drag.
