I'm even more curious as to what this means for Apple TV. While the app isn't the same, I'm curious as to what will happen there since you have to specifically select the Youtube option to access Youtube, and there is no workaround.

Airplay from your mobile device. Easier anyway.

True. But then that puts a dependency on another device to show it. I think they want to stay away from device dependency with the Apple TV, especially for Youtube. Not when the rest of the set-top market (and the consoles) are prepared to forge ahead with Youtube integration.

Would be funny if went from the Apple TV too. It's an anaemic app on ATV too but I watch masses of documentaries and movies on YouTube. I was one of those idiots that got an ATV3 expecting a Jailbreak to appear - it's still a useful tool (as I can stream all sorts of content like iPlayer and foreign TV from my phone) but without Youtube it becomes even more limited, when it's already too limited

From what I heard on the iMore Podcast yesterday. The licensing etc is different for the Apple TV version of You Tube, so it will be staying.

If and when You Tube gets removed from Apple TV, they will obviously need to be something put in its place to allow continued access to You Tube. I think the easiest alternative to allow access to You Tube through Apple TV, would be to include a Safari browser on it (through a software update). This would then allow continued access to You Tube through Apple TV.

But that would be fiddly. At least the current app can be navigated in a TV-like way.

Yeah admittedly more fiddle, but I was just pointing out a quick solution if it were removed. Plus the majority of people find You Tube is better through Safari than the app. :)

But there's no need to worry about it getting removed as the licensing is different.

The only bad side now is that the app will be Googleified (read: ads!)

Don't think there will be adds. Have been using Google Search and Google Chrome apps for iOS - no adds there.

The only thing I am a bit weary of is if Google decides to include the pre-video commercials like they do on the non-mobile version of YT: this would be a true disaster - it already is a disaster in a way for non-mobile YT users.

Well that worked out pretty well I guess, now that Google have switched to their own HTML5 player for the mobile site rather than using the native iOS video player, so you can’t view videos fullscreen or zoom any more…
