I see your iPhone 5 and raise you a regularly used 3GS. In fact I used it all last week with my SIM in it as my main phone to get away from the distractions of social media as I don't install FB/Insta/etc on it. Great music player (iOS 6 and below had the best music app), still good battery life somehow, good performance with the stock apps and Messenger, Opera, etc other light apps.

I use it totally naked and it feels great in the hand.

My iPhone 7 though, I have an Apple Leather case on it for now to keep it nice at least for the first year or two then it'll probably end up like the 3GS if not sold. It's the Jet Black model though so that was the main factor for a simple case. I love the saddle brown leather though.

As far as my previous devices. Droid Incredible, Samsung GS III, BlackBerry Z10, HTC One M8, Moto X, HTC 10, iPhone 4S, 5, 5c, 6 Plus, 6S, and SE all never had a case when I owned them. But none were as expensive as the iPhone 7 either as it was straight from Apple Unlocked and I plan on keeping it for many years this time. Though I always say that.

Also, the JB iPhone 7 is far from slick for me, the 3GS though, it's a bit slippery but easy to hold in the hand and curved so it's a non-issue. It also feels like a tank.
I hear you on the 3GS. I had one myself until about June 2014. No case either for the three years I had it. I gave it to a friend who needed a phone since the antenna on his 3GS was bad.

Which is another reason I keep my old devices. I've been able to help people over the years by giving them fully functional devices.

Either my wife's 5 or my 5 will die at some point or I will be able to give them to Sprint customers who need a phone.

I use a case because the phone is just too thin without one. Makes it much easier to hold on to. Plus I am a klutz and break things easily. I'd have to buy a new phone every month if I didn't have a case on.

in the end he's free to do what he wants, but it's actually more productive to use one device and not 2. logically, he's making no sense. but then again, logic is a lost cause these days.

No. Your defintion of logic doesn't equate to everyone else's, which appears you're lost in your own logic of how you view others views and opinions. You should look up 'Poes Law' sometime, you might find it useful.

The 7+ is way too slippery for me to deal with without a case

Y'know I thought that to begin with. As many will know I've got nerve damage (yeah, yawn, so what get a grip :p) but it does cause unexpected spasms and wild uncontrollable arm flailing. So I've been using cases ever since the introduction of the 6 series thanks to their being more slippy than a politician covered in grease.

But, thanks to suggestions from some kind folks on these here forums, I decided to get the Jet Black 7 Plus. What a difference, it's nothing like the slippy brushed metal finish. Lovely and more importantly comfortable and grippy to hold. It's the first phone for years I'm happy to use without a case, it's been surprisingly liberating :D And it's nice to once again appreciate the form factor, instead of getting a beautifully crafted piece of hardware then hiding it behind something and making it ugly and thicker.

Well it is good we all have choices. I have made mine and you have made yours so we are both happy.

This is why…

Because I use my old devices. If you sell yours for whatever reason that's cool. Just showing why I don't.

Sprint iPhone 5 64GB on WiFi streaming my work playlist from Google Music.

I have kids who sometimes play on my phone (guided access is great for this by the way). They frequently drop my phone, I sometimes do so a case is required!

I get that.

When we had the 3GS my kids played with that under supervision.

However, my kids have had a Mac (an iBook or PowerBook) since they were about five or so (they are 8 and 13 now). There wasn't much interest on being on my devices because of that. That and being on my or my wife's devices is generally a no-no.

Both kids had access to my iPad for awhile, but my son got an iPhone 4s for his birthday so he doesn't ask any more. Between his Mac, the PC laptop the school gives him, and his phone he doesn't really need to ask.

My daughter dented my iPad over Christmas because she wasn't careful so now she only has access to it for 20 minutes a day to use one app for school that has no Android equivalent. Otherwise she uses the G-Pad tablet my mom passed on to me over Christmas.

But both my kids learned at early ages that our devices (my wife and I) were NOT to be touched

I know it's your personal choice and all, and that's cool.

The way I use my phone - and my personal choice - I have a 7 plus jet black that I use naked with a best skin ever simple glossy back protector (it only slightly covers a little bit of the edges but leaves the rest exposed) - you can't even tell it's there and it feels just like the jet black without the back protector and provides the same grip, clarity, and less fingerprints.

I also like listening to music on my headphones and answering calls using the earpiece. What I do is set DND but because I have contacts that I would want to know have called with DND on, I add them to Favourites on the Phone app - DND lets Favourites bypass DND.

When a call comes, rather than unplugging the headphones, I just answer and select on screen to use the iPhone earpiece rather than the EarPods, and put the phone to my ear. Once the call is done, I hang up and put the EarPod on my left ear back in and my music automatically resumes once the call ends.

Similar in a sense to what you like to do, except I like carrying only one device around.

That's cool. It's what works for you. I was never meaning to imply that anyone should do it the way I do (unless they want to).

For the record, I am not always carrying two devices around. I may in the morning, but that's usually just because I am heading to work. Outside of work I am generally only using one device - my iPhone.

I keep it in a case for me, not the resale value. I hate bashed-up phones
That's one of my points.

My iPhone 5 is not bashed up. And I didn't and don't have a case on it.

Your statement assumes that if you don't use a case it automatically follows that your device will be bashed up.

That can happen, but it's not inevitable.

Slipperiness.

I hear that a lot from those who choose to use cases. And while I don't knock those who use cases for their choice (whatever reason they use for that choice) it makes me wonder sometimes.

Before the 7/7+ there were threads on how 'slippery' the iPhone 6s/6s+ were. The 6/6+ before that and the 5s before that and so on.

Yet I have managed to get through 4.5 years without destroying my iPhone 5 and 9 months without destroying my iPhone 6s+.

So, the slippery argument only goes so far with me. I think sometimes it's a cover for the fact that people don't want to be as careful with their devices as is required. I have seen more careless handling of devices by those who use cases then I ever have from those who do not. The assumption that the case will protect from general carelessness is strong. People don't have to think because that case allows them not to.

And before I get hate, I'm not saying this is the attitude of ALL who use cases. I know there are plenty of people who use cases and are far more careful with their devices than I am. But I just think sometimes with some people that assumption exists.

If you want to use cases fine, I have no problem with that. My problem is using slipperiness as a justification when I and many others who do not use cases have the same slippery device and don't have issues. There's got to be another reason here and it's not slipperiness. If it was, lots of people who don't use cases would be cracking screens and destroying devices on a consistent basis.
Small sweaty hands. 'nuff said.

Sweaty hands. 'nuff said.
I have sweaty hands from time to time.

Yet my iPhone 6s+, which does not have a case, is not dented, dinged or scratched. Nor does it have a cracked screen.

But yeah for some that is a problem. My hands are usually dry. So sure, sweaty hands for some is a reason I can accept.

I went caseless with my i5 and I scratched it once, on the side. It's inevitable that a caseless phone will pick up some kind of mark even if not dropped IMO.

I can't even imagine carrying my 5s without a case. It has nothing to do with re-sale as I will be keeping it when I upgrade. I have large hands and my Magpul bump case adds some thicness, but not too much, and the ribs on it makes the phone so much more secure in my hand. The lip protects the screen when laying the phone face down on a table top. I'm careful with my phone, but I've had one major drop that I know would have trashed a naked phone. I do prefer the screen naked though, so no screen protectors on my phone.

This kind of goes towards what I was talking about earlier with a case giving an assumption of protection.

I would never put my iPhone face down on a surface for the precise reason that you quote. I always lay my phone down on the back. If anything is going to scratch I want it to be the back of the phone and not the screen.

But because the lip on your case protects your phone's screen - this is something you admit to doing.

A difference between how a phone is handled without a case and with a case.

No offense. I'm not taking you to task or yelling, just pointing this out is all.

This guy has something smart to say to every reply. You live your life, everyone else does their own.

I use a case cause the iPhone 7 is slippery, that's a fact. The 5S was slippery but the squared edges made it easy to grip. I would love to go caseless but it's impossible with the 6/7 series.

I would love to go caseless but it's impossible with the 6/7 series.
It's not impossible.

It it were impossible my iPhone 6s+ would be damaged right now.

It's not damaged, hence it cannot be impossible.

It may not be possible for you, but just because it's not possible for you it does not mean it's impossible for anyone else.

And yes, I do have something smart to say. I'm pointing out the difference between assumptions about not using cases and my own experience - which has so far been different than what those assumptions dictate.

I Daren't go caseless with any phone at all... I'm just too paranoid of droppage and spillage..
