Even the original iphones which were 500, 600 dollar phones sold 270 000 in its launch weekend.

That was 2 years ago, back when people had jobs and money. Now a lot of people have neither and they have to prioritize what they spend their money on, and I think a new smartphone is at the very bottom of that list

The original iPhone had to lower its price too. And even after that, its sales greatly flattened out. Its sales were then dwarfed by the 3G.

I didn't like the Pre, I went and used one thinking I may pick one up, but I'll be selling my 3G for a new Iphone instead.

Right and I guess the economy decided to go in the tank as soon as the Palm Pre was launched, the economy has been in the tank since 2007.

The best way to prove what (smart) phone is the best or the tops is simple.

You always see (fill in the blank) is an iphone killer.
You never hear the iphone is a (fill in the blank) killer.

I really dont see what the big deal is, who cares if a phone can take video or not, the quality is always terrible, and if i wanted to film something I would use my real video camera. Video is an overrated feature on phones.

Besides here on Macrumors, where did you read the term "iPhone killer"? I really haven't seen this media-invented buzz phrase anywhere (besides here) in about 1 year.

In terms of your opinion about cellphones & video, I looks like you're going to be disappointed with the new iPhone (if its main selling point is indeed it's video capabilities).

Why do you think that is? When ever you are on top there is always someone trying to knock you off.
Its true, on the interwebs all I see is "_______ is the next iPhone killer." Thats proof the iPhone is on top right now. And while media people might not say this, its the customers who do say this.

I have never used a cell phone for video. I use it for calls, email, texting, browsing. I use my small Polaroid video camera if I need to take video, its higher quality. I have NEVER liked cellular video.

I actually find this thread useful. I don't have time to dig around pre forums to find the real feedback from actual pre users. This is the info I've been waiting to hear.

It's been nothing but raving reviews for months from people who have never used one. Now that they are in the hands of real people, we can hear the real pros and cons.

I agree. For months now the threads with Pre reviews, screenshots, and opinion have been treated like they're the most natural thing in the world in the iphone forums. But god forbid anyone post a thread pointing out the Pre's flaws - well that would be pure fanboyism, wouldn't it?

Can't have it both ways folks. Either discussion of iphone competitors, for better or worse, belongs in this forum or it doesn't.

And frankly, this thread IS useful. It's not a rant about the OP's own opinions but rather a collection of links to discussions by actual Pre users. Yes, the thread is one-sided, but lord knows there have been enough threads here extolling the Pre that you wouldn't be hard-pressed to find one explaining its many good qualities.

Couldn't have put it better. For the past 6 months, we've been hearing how the Palm Pre is this, how its better than iphone, how Apple got their asses handed to them, how they stopped innovating and the Pre is going to do this and that to the iphone. Someone has the audacity to counter this and point us some flaws with the Pre and all of a sudden they are clueless fanboys who believe Apple is "God" and the iphone is flawless. The funny thing is when when you go on the Pre forums and point out any flaws they also have same excuses lined up that people on this forum have lined up when people complain about the iphone.

Wow the Pre has nothing to worry about after that abysmal WWDC conference.

Yeah tell me about it. And what's up with AT&T getting mms later in the summer. Why isn't it ready now. I think apple made a mistake going with AT&T. They could have done better.

If it's one thing both phones need to do is to forget this exclusive nonsense. That way the carriers need to compete and everyone will tend to get better features.

Ignoring the iPhone and Pre zealots, my wild-*** guess is that the success or failure of the pre is going to be mostly determined by these issues:
  1. Price. For better or worse, lots of people buy mainly on price. I imagine that the $99 iPhone is going to hurt the pre.
  2. Carriers. Some people like a particular carrier, or are stuck with a particular carrier (they may be locked-in by contract, or the carrier may be the only usable one). Keep in mind that many (some?) people aren't willing to pay early termination fees.
  3. Apps. While the iPhone has the obvious lead, here, the pre only needs to get enough useful apps to be "good enough".
Me, I have a 1st-gen iPhone, and I'll be upgrading to the 3GS. Still, it's good to have competition, to keep Apple on its toes.

I'm not going to second-guess Apple or AT&T, but I will say that this really does not reflect well upon AT&T's network or management.
