Ummm. Because it's what they're releasing now and they want it to be successful. It's a new product line. What else would they do BUT hype it?

Yeah, but over-promising and under-delivering can backfire.

Usually best to do it the other way round.

Money is the reason. The iPhone uses tech that carries royalty fees etc costing apple per unit. The watch carries Bluetooth and wifi licensing. Most of the rest is pure profit

Apple continues to refine their masterful smoke and mirrors marketing.

Having already grabbed more money from every customers wallet including mine, they're the world's best sales organization.

This product needs the hype, now more than ever Apple's reputation could take a hit since Apple Watch _is_ being excessively hyped.

The tech crowd isn't big enough to sustain the watch market. Samsung has been trying for nearly 3 years now, and the other manufacturers haven't had much success either. The fact is that none of these devices do anything that a phone can't, except for fitness tracking, which a cheap band can do. Therefore the main selling angle is fashion.

The main selling point for me is time saving and apple pay. If I can just look at my wrist to see the subject of my incoming messages that saves me time of having to get my phone out and unlock it. Time is precious!

Wow, the Apple brigade is out in full force ahead of launch! Not sure why you all feel the need to defend Apple and justify your purchases by telling others they can't afford an item. Why so afraid of an open discussion?

Anyway, the :apple:Watch is being hyped so much for one reason: profit. I think the sales will fall somewhere between the Apple TV and iPad, closer to the Apple TV. However, the boost to the bottom line will be much higher because anything more than the base $349 is pure profit. Spending $700 on one of the stainless models generates probably around $300 of pure profit over the Sport. The moneymaking here will come in the stupid high markup on the Watch collection.

Since when did Samsung set the boundaries of success for Apple products?

They aren't. That's my point. Samsung approached the watch as a tech product. Apple isn't.

Welcome to the world of jewelry. The Apple Watch is no more overpriced than a typical stainless steel watch. Watches tend to have higher markups since they aren't purchased as often. I don't think Apple sees an annual replacement rate, and while they are apparently pushing a biennial replacement rate with the tie to the iPhone and the length of AppleCare+ (triennial for the Edition), I think they see a replacement rate more similar to that of the iPad.

We'll see in a few weeks how it actually turns out. They have promised 18 hour battery life and a handful of built-in functions. I'm more concerned with how it looks and how quickly I get used to charging a watch every night. Unfortunately, the outlet is in an inconvenient location behind my nightstand.

You charge your iPhone in an inconvenient location nightly? Why would the watch being in an inconvenient location be any different then?

The only way to successfully launch a product IS to hype it. If you don't make sure as many people know about it as possible, you cannot sell it. People don't buy a product they don't know exists. :)

And so restricted too.. All these rules at the Apple Store just to get this watch.

I found this to be very confusing. WHAT RULES at the Apple Store? The watch is not even out yet. How is it restricted other than every single possible combination of straps is not pre packaged? We still have No Idea how it will be done in the store. For all we know if you buy it in the store (after day one madness) you WILL be able to mix and match.

No. A "hype-fest" is not the only way to launch. Surprised you said that.

With the Apple TV, Apple was much more circumspect. At launch, Apple openly admitted they were still trying to work out what the product should be. Even Steve Jobs referred to it as a "Hobby" product.

That set a clear expectation in buyers' minds that it was a work-in-progress and tacitly asked buyers to forgive it's rough edges. Customers bought-into the idea and Apple received valuable and manageable feedback on how to improve the product for mass appeal.

If anything, the watch is a more radical a departure then the aTV was and Apple should be taking it easier. They're setting themselves up for a massive failure - and it doesn't need to be that way.

No way they are hyping this more than the iPhone

I mean, you can't go beyond 'extreme maximum hype' that comes with iPhone

There's no 'double extreme maximum hype' (I don't think  )

They don't consider this watch a "hobby" like they did the Apple TV. They went all in with the watch. Anyone with an iPhone is a target customer for the Apple Watch. This isn't the case with something like Apple TV.

I get your point, but I think they feel confident that they need to be aggressive with this product.

The Apple tv turned hobby the day it didn't sell (6 million since launch is a "failure" for apple). The watch will turn a hobby too if it doesn't sell.

They use this in the Watch edition don't they?

I would hope so at that price! :)

They're certainly being aggressive. And on so many fronts at once: Technology, pricing, retail, logistics, online, support, buying experience, returns recovery, brand, security and, yep, even "fashion".

I'll be very impressed if they pull it off.

I wouldn't call $350 bank breaking lol.

Anyway, I hope this "smart watch" fad passes, right now they all seem like gimmicky devices that have no real use outside of just being hipster tech fashion. Maybe Apple will change that, but so far it doesn't look like it

"Sorry you can't afford it", oh crap, that's already been done in here.

Hipster Fashion. Nothing more. SJ is rolling in his grave. :apple:

Correct. Your dilithium crystals wouldnae take it.

:)

Dilithium Crystals? Can you show us a link, huh, bet ya can't!!! I know for a fact Apple has developed a new Form of Anti-Matter. It has been extracted from the purest Anti-Molecules in the Universe. Then it is run through Galactic Sapphire Fusion Generators, and formed into the Anti-Christ. :apple:

Hipster Fashion. Nothing more. SJ is rolling in his grave.

I don't understand people like you. Why do you feel it is necessary to come to the Apple watch sub forum and voice your opinion about a product you have no intention of buying?

SJ rolling in his grave? Apple is the first $700 Billion dollar company. SJ would be PROUD of how Tim Cook is running the company.

All these comments sound like the same when the iPad came out. "Its just a big iPhone" even I said I do not need that. Well need become a fluid thing. Now i have 2 iPads. Sad. Apple has to hype it because it will be new for most of us. I had a pebble watch for 5 days until it broke, but I really started to like getting notifications while my phone was near by or in my pocket. Plus i have the 6+ and thats hard to get out of the pocket. To be able to answer your phone and return a quick text, that is worth $350. Come on look at all the nice watches out there that are well over $350; what do they do, tell time and maybe a date. wow.

Plus if your at the casino you can check your texts etc. Do think they will ban apple watch at the tables?

my initial reaction to the iPad was the same "It's just a big iphone!". Boy was I wrong. 2 iPads in the house.

I bought a Pebble watch myself just to see if I liked the concept of a smart watch and I've been wearing it every day for the last 2 months and havent missed a single text, call or e-mail.
