Ummm. Because it's what they're releasing now and they want it to be successful. It's a new product line. What else would they do BUT hype it?
Yeah, but over-promising and under-delivering can backfire.
Usually best to do it the other way round.

The tech crowd isn't big enough to sustain the watch market. Samsung has been trying for nearly 3 years now, and the other manufacturers haven't had much success either. The fact is that none of these devices do anything that a phone can't, except for fitness tracking, which a cheap band can do. Therefore the main selling angle is fashion.
Apple should focus more on the Macbooks and iPhone and surely the software.

Wow, the Apple brigade is out in full force ahead of launch! Not sure why you all feel the need to defend Apple and justify your purchases by telling others they can't afford an item. Why so afraid of an open discussion?
Anyway, theWatch is being hyped so much for one reason: profit. I think the sales will fall somewhere between the Apple TV and iPad, closer to the Apple TV. However, the boost to the bottom line will be much higher because anything more than the base $349 is pure profit. Spending $700 on one of the stainless models generates probably around $300 of pure profit over the Sport. The moneymaking here will come in the stupid high markup on the Watch collection.

I'm more concerned with how it looks and how quickly I get used to charging a watch every night. Unfortunately, the outlet is in an inconvenient location behind my nightstand.

You charge your iPhone in an inconvenient location nightly? Why would the watch being in an inconvenient location be any different then?
I usually charge my phone during the day at the office.
And so restricted too.. All these rules at the Apple Store just to get this watch.
The only way to successfully launch a product IS to hype it. If you don't make sure as many people know about it as possible, you cannot sell it. People don't buy a product they don't know exists.![]()
I mean, you can't go beyond 'extreme maximum hype' ...
No. A "hype-fest" is not the only way to launch. Surprised you said that.
With the Apple TV, Apple was much more circumspect. At launch, Apple openly admitted they were still trying to work out what the product should be. Even Steve Jobs referred to it as a "Hobby" product.
That set a clear expectation in buyers' minds that it was a work-in-progress and tacitly asked buyers to forgive it's rough edges. Customers bought-into the idea and Apple received valuable and manageable feedback on how to improve the product for mass appeal.
If anything, the watch is a more radical a departure then the aTV was and Apple should be taking it easier. They're setting themselves up for a massive failure - and it doesn't need to be that way.
They don't consider this watch a "hobby" like they did the Apple TV. They went all in with the watch. Anyone with an iPhone is a target customer for the Apple Watch. This isn't the case with something like Apple TV.
I get your point, but I think they feel confident that they need to be aggressive with this product.
Correct. Your dilithium crystals wouldnae take it.

They use this in the Watch edition don't they?
They're certainly being aggressive. And on so many fronts at once: Technology, pricing, retail, logistics, online, support, buying experience, returns recovery, brand, security and, yep, even "fashion".I get your point, but I think they feel confident that they need to be aggressive with this product.
I wouldn't call $350 bank breaking lol.
Anyway, I hope this "smart watch" fad passes, right now they all seem like gimmicky devices that have no real use outside of just being hipster tech fashion. Maybe Apple will change that, but so far it doesn't look like it

Hipster Fashion. Nothing more. SJ is rolling in his grave.
The Apple tv turned hobby the day it didn't sell (6 million since launch is a "failure" for apple). The watch will turn a hobby too if it doesn't sell.
All these comments sound like the same when the iPad came out. "Its just a big iPhone" even I said I do not need that. Well need become a fluid thing. Now i have 2 iPads. Sad. Apple has to hype it because it will be new for most of us. I had a pebble watch for 5 days until it broke, but I really started to like getting notifications while my phone was near by or in my pocket. Plus i have the 6+ and thats hard to get out of the pocket. To be able to answer your phone and return a quick text, that is worth $350. Come on look at all the nice watches out there that are well over $350; what do they do, tell time and maybe a date. wow.
Plus if your at the casino you can check your texts etc. Do think they will ban apple watch at the tables?
