Besides it being a new device...
It's cool in a way but not amazing for something that cost $350
And so restricted too.. All these rules at the Apple Store just to get this watch. Too much drama for a watch. Apple should focus more on the Macbooks and iPhone and surely the software.

We are forgetting that Apple is not just selling a "new device."

This is the first time since the advent of the App Store that Apple has introduced a device with, a dedicated App Store... And this new device isn't similar to the addition of the iPad in the sense that most apps are simply ported, or enhanced upon the experience you could have on the iPhone. The user interaction is different, the expectations are different, and the psychology is different.

And we all know how ludicrously profitable the App Store is. When it went down a few weeks ago, Apple was loosing about $2 Million in app sales.

The device also creates a whole new advertising platform, both in app, but more interestingly in location based scenarios. Imagine you are at Target and they serve you up a coupon for something you want, and hit you with a tap on the wrist. You press a "Use" button and when you get to the cash register to use Apple Pay, there's a QR coupon for the cashier to scan. You may say something like this already exists on the phone, and no one uses it... But remember when people argued that a fingerprint reader was dumb and gimmicky? Now they sell more apps than ever because of the little bit of convenience they added.

This is much less about a new device, and much more about a new ecosystem.

TL : DR

The :apple:Watch is more than just a watch. It's a new app store and ad platform.

App sales + Ad revenue + Shiny object = Silly amounts of profit.

Hence all the hype.

I don't understand people like you. Why do you feel it is necessary to come to the Apple watch sub forum and voice your opinion about a product you have no intention of buying?

SJ rolling in his grave? Apple is the first $700 Billion dollar company. SJ would be PROUD of how Tim Cook is running the company.

You'll never get it. Your too young. ;)

----------

It'll sell.

Of course it will. Just ask Siri. ;)

So basically this is the only device that will track my workouts and fitness and let me store music on it so I can listen to music while running/sprinting through my bt earbuds right? I don't know of another device that tracks all this and stores music.

I wouldn't call $350 bank breaking lol.

Anyway, I hope this "smart watch" fad passes, right now they all seem like gimmicky devices that have no real use outside of just being hipster tech fashion. Maybe Apple will change that, but so far it doesn't look like it

If any company has a shot at "changing" that, Apple is the only one that could.

How did you draw this conclusion? Based on poor sales of a product that isn't for sale yet or the assumption that everyone in the world thinks like you?

If the world thought like me there would be no such thing as Skinny Jeans and teens would not be walking around with their jeans sagging around their asses.

the watch doesn't actually do most of that. The phone does. which is why it falls short as a fitness device. still have to carry your phone on you

Afford ? I am just saying how it's stupid that a watch costs that much. The iPhone costs more and it's a much better value. If I can afford an iPhone.. I can afford an apple watch.
But Apple is overhyping such a new device with many flaws.

----------

No way on earth I am going to pay $10,000 for a gold Apple watch. That's almost a new car right there. Laugh at 99 percent of the population then. They will agree with me. $10,000 for something that will be outdated next year...

Let me potentially rephrase the "afford" comment for DBZ. It's a shame you can't justify the cost. $10k isn't really the cost of a new car. I'm pretty sure the lowest cost of a Honda Civic is still $15k not including tax, title.

Is Apple overhyping this? Considering the market I'd say no. We live in a market where Microsoft spent hundreds of millions to market the Kinect, and then marketed the Xbox One on the back of the Kinect when the Kinect doesn't really work. That is overhyping. If you have an iPhone I'd say you have a useful solution for your time keeping situation. If you see what else it does, especially in comparison to low end watches ($100+), mid-range watches ($1k+), or even other smart watches there appears to be something there for just about everyone.

If time keeping is your primary concern theres plenty of disposable Fossil watches, or a perfectly functioning Clock app on your iPhone.

If you want something that appears to have the level of fit and finish you'd see in the mid-range watch market, plus goes above and beyond the simple Google Now only experience of Android Wear then I think it would be a good fit.

It just depends on your expectations.

I think you may be wrong on this. You can go run with the watch and come back and sync with your iPhone. The $80 Pebble I have does that. You may not get GPS on either watch but heart rate and pedometer data? sure.

Your post is too much drama for something you have no interest in.

My understanding is that it has 2gb for music and I can pair my bt earbuds to it. I can use the stopwatch on it to do laps/sprints while listening to music. I thought it'd track heart rate and other fitness info until I can sync it to my iPhone. Is this correct?

Does the pebble allow music storage?

Or ya know.. maybe I just read about its features and saw nothing interesting lol. Or do you think that I think that everyone in the world thinks like me!!?!?

my initial reaction to the iPad was the same "It's just a big iphone!". Boy was I wrong. 2 iPads in the house.

I bought a Pebble watch myself just to see if I liked the concept of a smart watch and I've been wearing it every day for the last 2 months and havent missed a single text, call or e-mail.

Bought the first iPhone. Bought the first iPad.

I think the watch will be interesting. :)

Why is the apple watch more over hyped than the iPhone ?

When the iPhone first came out..The whole world was surprised and never knew that such a device would be at the hands of millions of people.
But today...a watch with a digital screen is more hyped than anything and also over priced too.
The iPhone was truly a revolutionary device that did A LOT more than any other cell phone/device did for it's time and never even imagined by many people that such a thing could exist.
And Apple didn't really overhyped it at all like they are doing to the watch.
You can't take pictures with it
you can't call people with it
you can't really do much on it.

The iPhone is truly one of the most magical device on earth.
It deserves more love :( This whole :apple:Apple watch thing is making me jealous.

The Apple Watch is a new product in its first generation, Apple has to make sure the word gets around in order for the device to enjoy as much popularity as possible. The iPhone has been around a while and word-of-mouth helps to advertise because it's an already established item.

There is a lot of hype because it's the first new product for the post Jobs era of Apple. Also because it has been in development for quite a long time, and there has been far more time between announcement and release than what people are used to. Also because it's the first wearable/fashion related product, and so hype is a more important tool for marketing.

Apple's masterful use of hype results in more sales volume than they would achieve without it.

Apple thrives off hype and bragging about what they've accomplished. They'll be happy to remind us at WWDC again this year.

Apple needs to hype it as excessively-hard as they are, because it's nothing but a cash-grab. I say that because I haven't seen anything to convince me that the cheapest Watch won't perform equally with the most expensive Watch.

The iPhone could really do a lot more or even just some more than other smartphones when it launched? As I recall it couldn't even copy and paste text, or had other apps that could be installed on it when it just came out.

The pricing differences are more on the fashion side of it rather than the technical side, given that a watch is part one (fashion accessory) and part another (functional device).

----------

Both are hyped

Bingo. As was iPad as well as I recall.

The OP may not know about how Mac OS X Leopard was postponed 5 months past it's announced release date because Apple said they needed to focus on their newest product release called "iPhone".
At least with the AppleWatch the iPhone rollouts have not been delayed. In fact it's not even time for an iPhone update so there's really nothing to talk about publicly in terms of the iPhone at this time.

Many people will disagree with you.

The iPhone was truly a revolutionary device that did A LOT more than any other cell phone/device did for it's time and never even imagined by many people that such a thing could exist.

Uh, we're not talking about Apple reinventing the wheel here. They just came out with an amazing phone and fixed what the rest of the industry was doing wrong with so-called SmartPhones.

And Apple didn't really overhyped it at all like they are doing to the watch.

Yes they did.

You can't take pictures with it
you can't call people with it
you can't really do much on it.
You haven't even used one.

The iPhone is truly one of the most magical device on earth.

And you say "Apple" doesn't over-hype it? Well somebody certainly is.

Actually, I should've had my sarcasm radar turned on because none of this entire post I quoted could possibly be serious.
