I'd think having it on regularly for vibrate or sound alerts would drain the battery faster, though.
Which is exactly why an LED would be perfect. The battery usage would be incredibly minuscule.

Wow I literally had to look at the op's original date of the post, I just knew it was 4-5 year old complaint thread. Wow flashing LED's in on a smart phone, do Android phones still do that?
How about the iSight/FaceTime camera?![]()
Shh, you are preventing them from coming to that conclusion.

Yeah, lots do. With different colors to denote different apps as well.
Ugh. I really hate flashy lights. They annoy.
To be honest the LED notification light on the Nexus 5 is nice. It isn't hella bright, so it doesn't blind you, and you can get an idea of what kind of notification awaits you (blue if FB, Green email, white text message, etc) without having to pick the device up. Sadly Google doesn't expose the LED settings other than turn it off or turn it on, so you need a 3rd party app to customize it.
Seriously?
I charge my iPhone at my bedside table. Last thing I want is some crazy LED flashing waking me at all hours because I got a new facebook message talking about cats on the internet.
How can a tiny led light wake you up more than when the whole screen turns on for 8 seconds?
I feel like if you have an LED, you control the phone.
Having to constantly check the phone whenever you return to the room? The phone is controlling you.
Yes, yes yes!!! Common sense is strong with this one!![]()
Yes, yes, yes!!!! Common sense is strong with this one!!!Not really. The opposite construction is easily formed.
If you walk into the room and your phone is demanding your attention by actively flashing a light at you rather than remaining passive until you ask it if you've missed something? The phone is controlling you.
That's the problem with "common sense." It's only "common" and "makes sense" to the extent that others happen to agree. Otherwise it's just so much hogwash.
Yes, yes, yes!!!! Common sense is strong with this one!!!
no logic is not this one's strong suit. A softly glowing signal would not demand ones attention.
... rendering it utterly useless in this context. The point is active vs passive. Some prefer the former, some prefer the latter. Trying to claim the high ground by suggesting that one position is "common sense" is rediculous.

Ummm no.
A flashing light does not demand anything.
Either you have a notification or you don't. The only difference is when and how you're made aware of it. As been said over and over though, you would easily be able to turn it off. Sure is nice to have options.
Evidently you're unclear on the meaning of the words "active" and "passive?"
If it doesn't demand your attention then it isn't doing anything
Really? Is that the best you can do? Your pedantic quibbling doesn't do anything to strengthen your weak position on this one.
Stunning retort.

I don't follow. You'd have been the one to turn the LED on in the first place, so it's hard to see how the phone is in control here.
The other thing is, it seems like you, and some of the other detractors, are really mischaracterizing the nature of the LED... Guys, it's nothing more spectacular than an intermittent blink.
Believe me, if I didn't know what it really looked like, and someone proposed putting on a bright gaudy flashing light on my iPhone (as some of you are imagining), I'd reel in disgust too.
Besides, as subtle as it already is on Android, I'm sure Apple would find a way to improve on it still.
