Wow I literally had to look at the op's original date of the post, I just knew it was 4-5 year old complaint thread. Wow flashing LED's in on a smart phone, do Android phones still do that?

Which is exactly why an LED would be perfect. The battery usage would be incredibly minuscule.

Shh, you are preventing them from coming to that conclusion. :p

Yeah, lots do. With different colors to denote different apps as well.

Ugh. I really hate flashy lights. They annoy.

To be honest the LED notification light on the Nexus 5 is nice. It isn't hella bright, so it doesn't blind you, and you can get an idea of what kind of notification awaits you (blue if FB, Green email, white text message, etc) without having to pick the device up. Sadly Google doesn't expose the LED settings other than turn it off or turn it on, so you need a 3rd party app to customize it.

I guess a subtle, non-flashing light wouldn't be so bad. I just never have personally found the need and I feel like anything additional that requires R&D, space inside the body of the device, and/or parts that need to be installed is something that I just cannot see the value in when the phone has about 3 other ways to notify you if you have a call or message.

Seriously?

I charge my iPhone at my bedside table. Last thing I want is some crazy LED flashing waking me at all hours because I got a new facebook message talking about cats on the internet.

How can a tiny led light wake you up more than when the whole screen turns on for 8 seconds?

I would like having my phone set up like this when I get a notification. Sound, vibrate and a led with different colors depending on the app. And if I want to read the message I press the home button.

I feel like if you have an LED, you control the phone.

Having to constantly check the phone whenever you return to the room? The phone is controlling you.

Yes, yes yes!!! Common sense is strong with this one! :apple::D

Not really. The opposite construction is easily formed.

If you walk into the room and your phone is demanding your attention by actively flashing a light at you rather than remaining passive until you ask it if you've missed something? The phone is controlling you.

That's the problem with "common sense." It's only "common" and "makes sense" to the extent that others happen to agree. Otherwise it's just so much hogwash.

no logic is not this one's strong suit. A softly glowing signal would not demand ones attention.

... rendering it utterly useless in this context. The point is active vs passive. Some prefer the former, some prefer the latter. Trying to claim the high ground by suggesting that one position is "common sense" is rediculous.

Ummm no.

A flashing light does not demand anything.

Either you have a notification or you don't. The only difference is when and how you're made aware of it. As been said over and over though, you would easily be able to turn it off. Sure is nice to have options.

Evidently you're unclear on the meaning of the words "active" and "passive?"

Your rebuttal is basically meaningless. If it doesn't demand your attention then it isn't doing anything and is unnecessary. Therefore your whole argument in support of the idea collapses.

Still gets back to the same point: it's a choice between an active and passive notification strategy. Apple has chosen a passive strategy. Many of us prefer a passive strategy so that our phones only bother us when we want them to. A notification light is part of an active strategy. Nothing wrong with that, EXCEPT when you start trying to claim that having a light is "common sense" while not having one is somehow not "common sense."

Really? Is that the best you can do? Your pedantic quibbling doesn't do anything to strengthen your weak position on this one.

Stunning retort.

Actually it's an active notification of, "I couldn't care less about your statement".

As opposed to the passive notification of him quietly putting you on his ignore list.

Doing you a favor, really. Since you need active notifications. :D

I don't follow. You'd have been the one to turn the LED on in the first place, so it's hard to see how the phone is in control here.

The other thing is, it seems like you, and some of the other detractors, are really mischaracterizing the nature of the LED... Guys, it's nothing more spectacular than an intermittent blink.

Believe me, if I didn't know what it really looked like, and someone proposed putting on a bright gaudy flashing light on my iPhone (as some of you are imagining), I'd reel in disgust too.

Besides, as subtle as it already is on Android, I'm sure Apple would find a way to improve on it still.

You really don't grasp the difference between an active and a passive alert?

Two additional points:

1) I've had plenty of phones with alert lights. Not understanding what they are or how they work isn't the issue here.

2) While I find alert lights annoying that wasn't the point of my post. The point was that claiming an alert light is COMMON SENSE is completely bogus. Just as bogus as claiming a lack of an alert light is common sense.

It's funny watching person after person miss the simple point I was making.
