I somewhat agree about the SSD, but the rest I don't. Were paying 1000-2000$ for a product, which is a lot of money, and for that reason we should be given a product that doesn't have little things to nitpick about. Ive never had that with a windows based laptop. Fact is why should we have to make compromises and "just live" with something that isn't 100% i.e. the screen gradient. This should have been picked up by apple in quality control, but clearly they're trying to save on costs. Also nothing against your age but you are 14, and probably don't know the value of a dollar, when your spending your own money your more inclined to care about these little things as you worked hard for the money and don't want to make compromises. Anyways, I agree with one of the other posters, you do seem quite mature for your age...but try to keep in mind when spending your own money its nice to get a product thats 100% not 98%

This is by far one of the dumbest things I have ever read. So, what you are saying to me is that I pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for a product and even if it's defected/flawed as long as it works I should just be happy I have it?
Actually, the dumbest thing you've read are the people encouraging the next generation that "complacency" and forgiveness in consumer products is a sign of "maturity".

Actually, you are completely correct! I retract my previous comment. In all honesty the original post was disturbing but when I started to read the other comments my disturbance was magnified.

Well said! Though I understand the spirit of the OP's opinions. There are too many generalizations about being okay w/ expensive defective equipment.

I think often times the older you get the more you underestimate the intellect of those younger than you. Considering that i'm not much older than the OP, I can't let him off the hook because of his age. I was 14 not long ago, I remember it quite vividly. I have cousins and friends his age and a little brother whose only 11 and I can say with quite confidence that by age 14 you shouldn't be making comments like this, you should understand the value of a dollar. I can't make any excuses for him because he's "only 14".

You don't become the most profitable company by not cutting corners somewhere lol, but yeah these issues should be corrected before they sent out the laptops...i think they had too many toshiba ssds and decided to use the rest of their inventory of them until they ran out... its their fault they ordered too many from toshiba but i guess they had to find some use for them

Apple has been using Toshiba blade SSDs since October of last year with the Rev D Airs, and started using Samsung in January. I think they like having two sources since it keeps both companies honest and also helps in case Samsung decides to retaliate for all the lawsuits. It isn't a "flaw" that some Apple units ship with Toshiba SSDs.

At least with the Toshiba and Samsung SSDs we don't need to worry about our 256GB SSDs looking like 8MB SSDs to the system (the way the new Intel drives can).

Oh good, The complainers were just a bit slow to post, but there back. :)

Started off so slow (I was getting worried)

Life is good at 14.

Wait a few years and let's see how the OP feels when he and his family will be burdened with paying for the interest on the U.S. debt used to pay for services for people who lived/died years before him. :D

Well kid, you see, we payed for these ourselves.

We go out into the world and dig ditches and kiss butts, and then when we go to buy something using a months salary, if there's ONE LITTLE THING amiss we are going to GO BESERK!!!!

get it? :D

Hilarious and true :)

For the millionth time:

People come here (and all forums mostly) to complain. That is, when they are not bragging or insulting others.

Some do come here to spread joy. These, i worry about actually.

You summed it up pretty well.

You are not mature; only childish and naive.

Just because something is so, doesn't mean it should be. Many people in Africa starve to death, does that mean we should starve as well? People in Brazil pay 3x the amount that USA people pay for their gaming consoles, does that mean that people in America should be happy with any price hikes? No, of course not.

You are young; only 14 and I promise you, you will never be a successful businessman if complacency is your nature.

Just to straighten things out:
I paid for this with my own money by doing chores, mowing the lawn, babysitting, and other chores and have been saving up for 2 years at least...
I don't really care what you guys think about me.... Thank you for the complements from the nice people! :)
As for the other people, some of you didn't complain and I'm fine with that. For the people who complained, go ahead! COMPLAIN! I was just trying to tell people that they have amazing Apple products! So, to sum things up, go flame somewhere else because your mad about your computer and insulting other people!

Ok, you saved for two years doing drudgery. Then you come here and spread the word of moderation, and reason.

You are now BANNED FOR GOOD!!!! :D

Take it in stride. It's your money and if you are happy with your purchase that's what matters. I happen to agree with you. Neither the Toshiba SSD nor the LG display are "flawed." It's no different from a car manufacturer using two different brands of tires on a particular model (which happens all the time). Sure Car and Driver might notice a small difference on a race track, but it doesn't affect the average person driving in traffic.

It isn't like Apple is advertising that it comes with a 1.6GHz processor and are putting in a 1.5GHz processor, or even that they are advertising any particular specs on the SSD. Both brands of SSD and display deliver exactly what Apple advertises, and they are all decent components.

You tend to get a range of emotions on a message board. Most people simply buy one and use it without ever posting here. People are more likely to seek out and find a site like this if they have a problem and want to research it or complain about it.

Our country's future is screwed.

Burch, i applaud you for your diligence and perseverance in obtaining your goals, if only more young people would be like you and work for what they want. i did instill that into my own children and it pays off wonderfully farther in life.

but just an observation as to society as a whole, since when is complacency the norm? i pay top dollar for things i want (not necessary need mind you, but wanted and purchased with my hard earned $$$) i do expect said items to work, and if they do not i will take them back for either a refund or exchange.

i am not OCD to the nth degree, my iPad2 exhibits just a smidge of light bleed (in a dark room with a black screen...lol) and there are minute scratches on the back but i do not mind, it works well within my expectations and i enjoy playing and working with it (mind you i come from a decade where man hadn't yet landed on the moon and personal computers filled caves full of bats...:D)

enjoy what you've worked hard for and doom to the naysayers, everyone has expectations that are not necessarily met but it's their choice to continue to make these purchases or not

thank you for the insight of youth

enjoy

No offense because Im sure you perceive that as "hard work", but you should keep in mind that you just got paid $1500 for doing chores that most of us had to do FOR FREE at your age. I love that you have adults around that are doing this, but your perspective on the value of a dollar is skewed since this was more or less "free money" that was given to you in order to learn valuable life lessons.

The adult world is different because we're the ones actually putting money IN the ATM's so then its understandable that if we choose to withdraw it that we are critical about the products quality. Especially when it comes to production line devices where each product is supposed to be uniformly identical and the one we got is not.

Im sure you have good intentions here but theres a few lessons to be learned here:

1) Companies should be held responsible for their products. In this case, Apple allows easy returns so IF someone has a problem then its not illegal to swap it out
2) Complaining is not a negative act to anyone but fanboys because if it werent for complaints we would never have change or innovation
3) The true sign of maturity is the ability to respect the fact that needs and expectations are an INDIVIDUAL choice that shouldnt affect you in any way

Amen brother! Congrats on earning your own money and don't let the old geezers here put you down. :p You keep doing what you are doing, and know you have one of the best pieces of personal computing available to man. Enjoy!
