Streaming sure but the box itself was about $90 to make and sold for $130 before the price hike. Thats an easy margin on what is essentially spare iPhone parts in a plastic shell. There aren't many R&D overheads here.

Quite right. Apple TV 4K is very profitable for Apple. No idea why anyone would or could think otherwise.

debatable. while I do think a lot of modern corporate design (yes, apple included) looks completely ugly, that may just be because I use software from the 2000s and 2010s all the time.

no doubt they are cheap to make and have a great profit margin. They also have some great content on the service itself. I watch some on a weekly basis. But Apple is still losing billions on the streaming servcie.

Android 16 looks pretty good. I prefer it over OS26 liquid glass.

Wear OS 7 looks pretty good too.

So by that logic you also did not like iOS 7-18.
Apple doesn’t have the same flatness as Samsung. Samsung’s app icons have very little detail and have very simple designs. Look at Apple’s icon for “settings” and compare it to Samsung’s. I should have said instead “I don’t like Samsung’s icons because they look flat with very little detail and effort. They are minimalist in a lazy and boring way.”

The beautiful think about Android is you can install themes or launchers to change just about everything if you do not like the "flat icons". You can buy different Android phone makers that makes things look the way you are used to. Choice is a beautiful thing......

Well those aren't Samsung icons in those screenshots that were posted - That's Google's stock Android.

Flat is fine, skeuomorphic is fine. But as a current iOS user who is looking forward to things like the iPhone Ultra, and has actually bought and used Pixel/Samsung devices in the last decade, I prefer the current Google stock OS design to anything from anyone else. Their design language is very good right now.

All subjective, of course.

That's definitely true for me. I love iOS, but I hated the flat era, it looked so dead and lifeless. So boring. At least Liquid Glass started bringing life and depth to it!

This is exactly what I hate about Android. It reminds me of back in the day when I was mucking about with Linux. You can build something great, if you know where to find all the bits you need to do it. But it's never quite right, soo you need to keep mucking around. It's exhausting!

But I love iOS, I've used it since v1.1. It lets me change what I want, but is set up well enough out of the box that there just isn't much I do want to change.

This is the answer. Steve Jobs was not only a business, marketing, and technical visionary genius, but he had aesthetic values lacking in other tech companies. Apple products were always elegant and artistic in a way no other companies achieved.
Agreed..Jobs was a genius is a variety of ways and he made Apple very special in a lot of ways. But that was then and this is now. This is not the Apple of the Jobs era.

Isn’t it weird that there is exactly one company who puts a lot of work into the design of their OS and all other manufacturers (Google, Microsoft, Linux developers) can only produce extremely ugly UI elements? Is it really that hard to make a great looking, minimalist but modern UI? Android looks like a children’s toy (and like a cheap one, from the dollar store). Microsoft looks like someone stitched together garbage and painted it over with a shiny color… Linux… well Linux KDE and Gnome both look unrefined to me. KDE looks like a worse version of Windows while Gnome looks brutish and unsophisticated. Are “good looks” just not important to the average person?
It looks like you have one IT course left to complete 😉

There's nothing wrong with flat.

Pretty much every display is flat. Like paper. There's nothing 3D on a display. It's all flat. Flat icons on a flat display make a ton of sense.

If there is a pseudo-3D icon on your iPhone, it is, in fact, actually flat.
The originator of our modern flat design is Microsoft's Metro itself inspired by public transport signage which all takes its cue from Harry Beck's seminal London Tube map. Flat generally makes everything easier to understand.

They also decided that 3d looks like liquid Glass (liquid ass seemed common) was ugly. It's hard to keep up lol.
Yeah, if the consensus on this forum were ever right, Apple would have collapsed years ago, as just about every product they’ve released since (and including) the OG iPod is supposedly an abject failure.

Linux looks best when you design it yourself. That's its strength, no other OS comes even close in possibilities.

I wouldn't say "everyone does worse than Apple", it's more so that Apple is less afraid to experiment with UI than others. Not one Android version was memorable to me ever since Material Design became a thing, same with Windows since 8 (10 got the exact same design language and 11 slapped rounded corners and Mica on top of it).

None of them are truly bad, they're just stale because they try too hard not to upset anyone. This is also somewhat counterproductive because then you get younger people who never used any significantly different UIs in their lives and would be even more upset with a redesign, even a minor one like Windows 11. Linux on the other hand is where "good looks are just not important to the average person" is closer to reality, because it's FOSS-driven and niche - its primary demographic are power users and developers, and they have no time or need for it.
