So if I get a microsim tray, i would be able to use the 4g sim in my 3gs phone and have a fully functional phone?

yes, but 4.0 is jailbroken already, so only time stands between you using mywi on your iphone 4. jb needs a public release, and mywi needs an update. shouldnt take too long.

i am sure they will not. the intention is not for you to use your sim in another phone but to use the sim in the phone its intended for..

In the packs o2 sent to customers who registered their interest. They sent a new sim with cut outs for mini and micro sim. They also sent a black micro sim to mini sim adaptor.

Microsim only on iPhone 4??!!

Just read some posts on here regarding the iPhone 4 and microsim...

Is this an option or a requirement?

I'm currently on T-Mobile and was looking to keep my existing contract and just buy the 4 on PAYG and unlock.

But T-Mobile does not support the iPhone so doubt they will have microsims, so does this mean I'll have to sign a new contract?

You couldn't do a google search to see that iPhone 4 was micro-sim only? Seems logical that it's not optional.

Why did apple go Microsim

Why is apple going MIcrosim. The extra features that it brings the iPhone is not going to use (larger sim storage contact being the largest one)

Size is not a good argument because the hardware to read the sim card is sill going to be the same size and not changing. So all the save is the tiny little bit of plastic which again is a non issue in how you can shove it about any where.

It is going to create a huge problem for the carriers on release day because they have to move so many people sim cards over. This is instead of just moving the old sim over to the new phone and being done.

I just can not thing of a good reason for the switch.

To me I see it as just more Apple lock in because it makes switching phone much more difficult because you can not just pop it out and put it in a different phone.

Because you touch yourself at night.

No, seriously, it's just smaller componants and therefore take up less space inside the phone itself.

Saving a small amount of space is enough of a reason, whether you want to believe it or not.

Additionally, it's not going to create much of a headache (typically, people would switch over to a new sim via iTunes activation rather than putting their old sim in their new iPhone anyway.

iOS4 has already been jail-broken. So, its only a matter of quick time when the retail version comes out for it to be JB.

Jailbreaking an unlocking are very different. The iPhone 4 will undoubtedly be jaibroken within hours or days (iOS4 already has been within hours of each release). An unlock could be immediate, could take a while, or could be never.
The iPhone 2 will always be unlockable, and it sounds like the dev team has the 3G and 3GS all set for the newest modem firmware as well, but the iPhone 4 is unknown at this point.

I have seen more than one iPhone glitch up on the switch. The problem was solved with just putting in the old sim card in and it worked great. Over a year later the same old sim card is working in the iPhone and the new sim card that came with it was unused.

now if you want to use the space agrument. Apple could of completely done away with the sim card and just put that infomation on a chip. Smaller size and could do everything.

There is more free air space around that sim card in the 4G iPhone than the extra size of it.
It just seem to me more classic apple lock in making it more difficult to switch phones.

How about if you have more the one phone that you switch back and forth with your sim, Now that the Iphone 4 requires a micros sim it seems that apple has basically put a stop on using another phone besides the iphone 4. I haven't seen any other phone out there that uses micro sims. Will there be a converter to go back and forth?

how does it make it harder to switch phones? existing sims can be cut down, and im sure there will be a way to use the smaller sims in regular slots too

your right. Apple wants it to be harder to switch phones, so less people will want to buy one, due to the hassle involved. They hate money

Everything isn't a conspiracy. Steve Jobs himself said they needed the space. I've seen pictures of the hardware needed for a SIM versus the hardware needed for a Micro SIM. It is noticeably smaller. Not a lot, but noticeably. And in small electronics like this, so tightly packed, that makes a lot of difference.

All GSM phones have SIM cards. Putting it on a completely internal chip would be a bad idea I feel. And obviously Apple did too.

They announced a couple of days ago that they will be offering the iPhone 4. So they will have microsims.

Oh yeah... thanks for that.
I checked their website when Jobs announced the iPhone 4 on the 7th but there was no mention of it on T-Mobile.

Checked just now and its now available.
