Actually, from the article on MR, apple did care. Faced with an option of getting turn by turn but having to give over private information of iphone users, they opted to make it harder on themselves by making their own.
As for the notification light, if you're not suggesting this to apple directly, then this is just a big fapping session.
This should be a message to everyone. Apple doesn't care one bit about the consumer. If it did, it would've kept Google Maps and it would've implemented at least an optional LED notification light by now.

Instead, they eliminate the best mapping option available and ignore a feature that would be so ridiculously simple to implement, and clearly a ton of users want.

This is something I had hoped they would add on the iPhone 5. Obviously its something you can just turn off if you don't want it flashing. The GS3 notification menu allows you to add or remove any apps from notify and you can set a "silent period" during the night/day as needed.

The attached capture shows the menu for the GS3 but I'm sure it might be similar on other devices.

Are you running a custom ROM? My GS3 LED indicator menu looks completely different and doesn't have all those options

Pretty much every flagship Android device (SGS3/Moto Droid 4/RAZR/HTC One X) has an LED notification light too

Sure do, and they light up every time something happens. Emails, Messages, miss called, downloads complete, useless updates you don't get on android phones, etc. Silly and annoying.

Apple needs to save these little features/gimmicks that other phones have had for ages to make sure you upgrade to the iPhone 8.

Yes. AT&T GS3 on CM10. I know the stock AT&T menu had fewer options for colors etc.

No, they don't. I have mine set to only blink on missed calls/voicemails/texts. I turned off the blinking for emails, Facebook, and everything else.

Nice! I can't wait to switch to CM10 but looks like the VZW version has some issues right now still.

I bet you are right, but I want to know now.

Someone on another thread mentioned that the spot where the front facing camera is could be an LED notification light. Doubt it because it clearly looks like a lens in the pics. We will find out soon enough.

I guess he's not asking for disco ball just led notification. Camera flash? not helpful and could be bad for battery life...

and someone thinks this is not useful must be blind...

Are you completely oblivious to the fact that you can change that?

How did you get to that menu? I've been wanting to change the LED colors for a while but I don't seem to have that option, can only find this.

Wow. A perfect example of why I have never gotten, and will never likely get, Android's UI. Looking at this screenshot, I am completely at a loss as to what it is telling me. I just see the word normal about 50 times and some bars of colors. Every time I pick up an Android phone at Best Buy, I stare at the screen wondering what the hell I'm supposed to do. And when I do tap something, it's almost never what I expected it to be.

I left BB almost a year ago (3GS launch day to be exact) and never looked back. Still can't figure out why I didn't do it sooner. The iPhone is all I could want in a smartphone and then some. It's like having a mini laptop in my pocket. Only thing missing is an LED notification light for new calls, emails, texts, calendar items, etc. That is the only thing I miss from BB. Not that unlocking the iPhone to check for these things is a lot of work, but it was just so convenient to glance at the LED on the BB. Any chances that the next generation iPhone will have this?

It has one on the back. The white led can be set to flash when the phone rings, when you get a text, or other notification. Led indicators are an eyesore on a phone in my opinion, I'm glad the iPhone doesn't have one. Besides how hard is it to turn the phone on / look at the screen and see a red circle with a number in it? The software has notifications built in. It shows on the screen when the home is pressed. Why is that not enough? Go buy a Blackberry if you have to have a led indicator. I doubt the iPhone will ever get one....at I hope it never does.

Its a white led did you need a red one ???
I don't understand how people can seriously defend the iPhone's camera flash as being a legitimate notification light. It's not. (The Motorola/Samsung LED notification lights can be any color you want, FYI.)

The entire point of an LED notification light is that it is subtle and blinks repeatedly or stays lit until you acknowledge the notification. The iPhone camera flash does none of that.

There is not a single good reason why something like this can't/shouldn't/hasn't been implemented:

A) That's NOT a notification LED
B) LED indicators can be made so that they are never seen unless you chose to have them on....so how would that possibly be an eyesore?
C) It's harder to turn on the screen than it is to glance over at a blinking or lit LED. That's how hard it is.
D) I don't want a BB, I want an iPhone...with an LED alert.

If it got one, it wouldn't harm you in any way. Why do you feel the need to deprive everyone else of a useful feature that you would just turn off and never be bothered by?

You're hoping that a feature isn't added? One that you can enable or disable? A feature that you can't physically see if its disabled. Apple already added a flash indicator by using the camera flash on the back of the phone, does this also annoy you? The problem with the camera flash is that its on the back of the phone and a person would normally set the phone down on its back and not see the alert.

I guess I don't understand a mindset of wanting to reduce functionality in a device by limiting features. Apple has come a long way by improving notifications, adding widgets in the pull down bar, silent times etc. and I hope they continue to improve and add features.

I understand what you're saying. The options are more limited on the carrier version of software which come with the phone. The normal/normal options you see are the length and speed of the LED. You can adjust it or leave it as default (normal/normal). The carrier versions are just on or off for calls, notifications and charging.

Had a couple BB's back in the day with the flashing indicator. Turned it off, it was annoying. You need a flashing light to tell you that you have an email, or missed a call? Wow...
