MH1, i dont know how you missed his original post, it was only one more up.. he wasnt talking about the retina

see the part where it says "regular MBP"?

I needed a fast, portable computer for creating music on the go. The retina not only provides a fantastic screen, but the specs and form factor to keep up.

The apps I use are mostly up to date, and the apps that haven't been updated are still perfectly usable, if slightly blurry. Honestly, I don't mind putting up with a few blurry apps for the year, ESPECIALLY if they're to receive updates.

what music apps are you using that are up to date/retina-friendly?

With those glued laptops, yes, the probability is higher... :p

You would lose in resell value since they are not upgradable...

the laptop isnt glued. even if it was how would that create a higher probability of the motherboard burning out in exactly three years? Not upgradable? if you get 16g of ram in the first place, its as upgradable as any other laptop. what are you talking about? cant go any higher on ram, SSD is replacable, what else is there to upgrade? im not following you.

Well, Ferrari 458s caught on fire because of glue, http://www.zercustoms.com/news/Ferrari-458-Fires-Caused-By-Glue.html

But I don't think you caught on to his tone about the glue.

Logic Studio works fine under the new Retina. I've yet to try out Omnisphere and EWQL's PLAY engine though, as all my samples are on my old Mac Pro, which Apple has under repairs for now.

Don't troll too much cuz you may get 2 dead pixels in your second rMBP :p

It is completely idiotic to me to buy the regular MBP and SSD @Apple...

Also, spending $3000 for a computer that lasts in 3 years (End of AC warranty) is not reasonable

funny, my Rev 1 MBP lasted for 3 years after the warranty was up...didn't realize I needed to take a hammer to it because clearly it won't work without support. Damn, my iPhone 2G, 3G, Wii, PS3, TV, PS2, Gamecube and VCR/DVD player are all out of warranty as well, what should I do?!?!?!?!?!

omisphere is amazing.. and logic looks crazy good on this screen. id have bought this machine just to use those two alone..

I was referring to the glued battery :). Whenever someone refers to a high-tech product that uses glue, it sounds reaaaaally cheap material. If Steve Jobs was alive, he wouldn't allow it...

The issue here is why should I spend a lot of money in one shot. I prefer to buy the base model or an affordable configuration, then upgrade whenever I need to. I don't want Apple to impose constraints such as I need to buy 16GB RAM from the beginning else I won't be able to upgrade , This a Consumer right that Apple cannot take away. They must always offer the choice and let the consumers decide.

its epoxy not glue. sound better? and if you have to buy an extra 8 gigs of RAM down the road because you ran out of cash, maybe you shouldnt be blowing thousands on a laptop.

btw, you never did answer. why would a battery that has been "epoxied" cause a machine to not be upgradable?

do you mean that logic is retina-optimized though? I mean obviously apps still 'work'.

So your reasoning is if someone doesn't get the 16GB from the beginning
, then it is because he is running out of cash and should not buy a laptop??? very childish reasoning, I think I am dealing with a kool-aid addict...

Following your reasoning, I should get a 768GB SSD too from the beginning else I shouldn't be spending thousands on a laptop?

As I said previously, I may or not buy 8GB of RAM down the road. It all depends on my needs, and I like to be in harmony with my needs and my money, any problem with that?

Not to mention, if I buy the RAM and SSD in 6 months, they will be probably cheaper.

I never said that. I think you love to argue just for arguing...

All depends where you are on your journey with Apple.

Sounds like your still at that Rationale and logical stage.... enjoy it while it lasts.

In the more advanced stages, you will watch Tim on stage, and buy whatever he demos.... it will be sexy, amazing and you MUST have it...there and then, waiting for the store to open to get your pre-order in. ;)

As a Veteran of Apple, I have moto not to buy Rev A products, I think the next version of the Retina will be the one to get, so happy to wait.

I'd like to say people are buying the Retina, cause they need it, though I think its more of a want/form factor.

Given there is NO after market option available for the retina.... I would say he is right.

I'm buying mine because I need a new MacBook Pro and it's the nicest one available. It has everything I need.

it is most definitely not extremely smooth. have you used your RMBP for more than a day? lots of little things start losing FPS all over the place, making it feel slow.

Yes I have used it for more than a day (granted "more than a day" in this case is only 3 days). I noticed quite a bit of choppiness with Lion. Once I upgraded to ML (yes, I upgraded before the official release; yes I have access to a dev account), I have not noticed any framerate issues at the 1440x900 setting. There may be some when the workspace is set to 1920... but I don't really think that workspace is necessary (especially once more apps are coded to be retina aware).

For whatever difference it may make, I have a 2.6/16 model. I should also mention that I don't use facebook. I personally find it to be a waste of time. So if there's any lag there, I don't know about it. But for all of the usage I've subject it to, it's been smooth as butter.

Hi, I am hesitating to order the 15" rMBP because I heard that most of the applications look very bad on this machine. If that is the case, why so many people are buying it? Don't they have a problem with the display or the lag?

As someone else has already mentioned, I bought a rMBP because I need a new laptop and the timing is right. The professional reviews are universally positive.
I wouldn't trust this forum or the internet for anecdotal complaints. The loudest voices on the internet are almost always negative.

Go to an Apple store or a Best Buy and have a look at one yourself. I think you'll find the complaints are overblown. The lag has been fixed with Mountain Lion, which is free to all rMBP owners and now available. And the applications look better than non-retina-supporting iPhone apps on a retina iPhone. I wouldn't call that very bad, and it's just that the hardware raises your standards.

Idiotic, eh? Well that is what I just did.

I would say spending $3000 on a computer for a screen that apps aren't optimized for, that has had some ghosting/image retention problems as well as causing a certain amount of lag in normal use (not to mention actual graphically demanding use) because the extreme amount of pixels is border line too much for a mid range mobile GPU to handle to be much closer to "Idiotic". "Oh, but it's a fraction of an inch thinner and it's a pound lighter, who cares if I have to carry around extra adapters just in case."

My point is, everyone has preferences. It will get really nasty fast if you say someones preferences is idiotic.

Sofianto, sorry. i get lost in your dust cloud of stories and cant keep up. you actually said motherboards in macbooks will die in three years exactly because of a "glued" in battery.

1. The applications that are optimised for Retina look amazing.

2. The all-flash architecture is blazingly fast.

3. It's thinner and lighter, which makes it easier to carry.

4. I've only seen lag when running at the full 2880 x 1800 resolution, and even then only in games with all the bells and whistles turned on. For everything else, the interface and graphics are smooth as silk.

I'm running ML and still see a lot of lag in both Chrome (but not Safari 6) and Mission Control

are you guys doing something special?

on the intel graphics its pretty much unusable, but nvidia is still choppy as hell

edit: heck, even non-retina plugged into my cinema display is laggy...

I haven't read the replies to this, but for me, I can say I only use a handful of applications on here:

iPhoto
Pages
Safari / Chrome
iTunes
VLC
Transmission
iCal
Mail
Address Book
Evernote

All of those were updated within the first 4 days, except for Pages, which was updated today. I'm a pretty happy customer.

IMHO you should buy a computer to fit your needs.

I'm replacing a laptop that has low speed ports, a ulv processor, and a 11" screen.

Why?

I need CPU for decryption, and forensic processing. Fast IO for forensic processing and data transfer. Finally the retina screen because to me, screen real estate is second to god.

In short, it's a great match, and I'm a PC user...

I got my rMBP not for the display, but for the form factor, battery life, and GPU. I'm a hardcore PC gamer and enthusiast, and never had any interest in buying an apple product before. The lag is a non issue to me, and I know it is entirely a software issue, and not hardware. The lag doesn't bother me much now, and I'm sure with time apple will make it much better.

My only complaint with the display is it's relative dimness, color reproduction and contrast is good enough for my needs. Overall I'm extremely pleased with my rMBP, I had never thought a laptop of this form factor would run games so well, and still have great battery life.

Lol you bought the RMBP just for that!?
