Normally I’m not very price-sensitive for products that deliver what I want, but the Duo price is pretty steep where I live, from around $2700 up to around $4400 with tax. I have no strong opinions on whether it might fail or not, but the pricing certainly limits its audience.

(And also it doesn’t deliver what I’d want.)

Posted in another thread but the nano texture matte finish is making the crease less visible during most hands on videos.

This seems to show the crease quite prominently and it looks very similar to the Z Fold 8.

As said previously the opening animation feels surprisingly natural and can't wait to see an ebook app or note taking app considering the two halves as two pages, that you wouldn't need to keep "flat". (but the shown phone case were kinda horrendous though). Also guess that the screen texture will mater, as it seems the most disliked thing is the plastic feeling of those folding devices

As soon as I saw the reveal video in my YouTube recommended I bursted out laughing. This thing is going to hit the pavement so damn hard.

1. It's ugly as hell.
2. It's too expensive
3. Accessories will be a nightmare.
4. Why not just a buy an iPad?
5. Extremely prone to damage from every angle.
6. Impossible to service (Even by Apple's standards)
7. Hinge
8. Plastic screen

They will all be e-waste in about 5 years.

Dude, that’s hilarious. As I was watching the reveal, I started laughing uncontrollably and had the exact same thoughts as you. Ugly as hell. Awkward. Like they birthed a heap of junk and slapped a $2000 price tag on it. I also laughed so hard because they completely copied the MS Duo.

I’m thinking: “This nonsense again.”

And then I start laughing even harder at all the influencers and die hards who are lining up to buy this… which indeed will end up in a landfill… but before it does, they will flood Facebook Marketplace after 3 months of ownership. I can see the title of the ads now:

“Like new iPhone Duo. Only unfolded 5 times! Save 25% off the full retail price…”

And then I burst out laughing at that female version of Jony Ive pontificating about the design. Admit it babe, you ripped off MS who had this almost exact design 7 years ago.

Samsung basically did the heavy lifting here in terms of price acceptance. Coming in at less than what was rumored is gonna do wonders for early adoption.

Apple really knocked it out of the park on this one. It just relegated the poor Fold 8 to sad knockoff category, sadly.

Plenty of ebook apps supporting 2-page mode already exist. Even the Apple Books app support 2-page mode iirc.

Dunno about note taking apps though.

yeah, just checked a longer video, and Books was showcased indeed, thanks! (even though I'm more into eink device for that use)

Also, one of the biggest negatives with this phone ( outside of the price) is the fact that it does NOT have the best camera system out of the iphone line up this year. If you are paying $2K this phone should have the best battery and cameras. The 18 pro models still have the best cameras and are cheaper ( slightly).

Yes, I know people will jump on this and flame me. But this is a prediction and we will see if I am right or wrong over time.

I predicted the AVP would fail because it was obvious: it was worse at many things compared to other device types like smartphones and laptops and desktops. That it didn’t have much of a reason to exist.

Same too for the Fold. It is worse at several things compared to non-folding smartphones, laptops, desktops… and doesn’t have much of a reason to exist.

  • Unfolded or folded, the Fold has seams since effectively 2 slabs are sandwiched onto each other and with a hinge. It will always therefore be design compromised compared to a non-folding smartphone.
  • Because of the folding capability, and this is a big deal, it has to have a PLASTIC SCREEN. Plastic is noticeably inferior to glass from an optics standpoint, including reflections, and it will have a crease. And over time, we can see that the crease gets more pronounced with other Foldables. So on this, it will have a worse screen than non-folding products like an iPhone or MacBook or iPad.
  • Fragility and processing power: it will be more fragile because they have to make each slab as thin as possible and there is a hinge, which is subject to breaking and failure. And the thermals suffer which can compromise performance.
  • Very few use cases: the Fold turns into a tablet… but people buy and use non-folding smartphones precisely because of its form-factor: pocketable, one handed use, simple interfaces in software, etc. They aren’t asking for something to turn into a tablet, it doesn’t fit the use cases. And the stats support people not wanting Folds: Foldable smartphones after several years on the market still only have less than 5% of the total smartphone marketshare.
You don’t and won’t see people standing in line at a grocery store with one basket of food in one hand and an unfolded smartphone in the other hand. One handed device use is one of the main use cases of non-folding smartphones.

And for people who also like and want a tablet, it comes down to the problem of the fold being inferior across a set of things to a non-folding iPad.

I don’t see, therefore, how an iPhone Fold can be successful for Apple. Will some people buy it? Yes. How is failure defined? For Apple, it would be not leading in marketshare in the category and not capturing enough customers to make it a viable category to continue developing. Apple needs relatively large markets and scale, and that is not going to happen with the Fold is my prediction.

Go ahead and attack me, and for anyone wanting this device on day 1, that’s great. I don’t think foldables will not exist, but a device that doesn’t have much of a reason to exist is nothing more than a niche market device at best.
There is no chance this will fail. The idea is laughable. I will actually stick with Max size but they will sell a ton if these.

I had the same discussions with people when I predicted the AVP would fail. The AVP didn’t even meet Apple’s internal, paltry sales expectations and then they scaled production back.

But it won’t matter where or even at what price the iPhone Fold will be sold at: it will fail because it’s a device that doesn’t have much of a reason to exist.
Im glad you realize what a genius you are.

Click bait

Might not be a best seller, but Samsung and the others have been making lots of money.
Samsung has it's 8th version, that sells.

People here will remind us that the other brands have been selling these for a long time. And the other ones ain't cheap, so....
Their first couple version were all recalled.

Global foldable smartphone marketshare after 7 years as a product category is still only 2%.

An echo-chamber of niche product users isn’t representative

Maybe that 2% is precisely why apple is entering the segment. It’s not crowded, and based on articles from the financial times (not sure where they’re getting the numbers tbh) but they reported that apple expects to sell 10 million units vs 250 million regular iPhones..

That’s like 4% of iPhone sales, but with the $2k base price, that’s like $20 billion in gross sales before accounting for configurations, services etc.

All apple needs is a small % of iPhone buyers to say “**** it I want the expensive one” and apples got a decent track record of selling premium version of products..

But well see

I have been watching a lot of hands on videos. One thing that is consistently obvious is that the inner screen is an aggressive matte. Matte screens slightly wash out colours compared to glossy screens. There’s a loss of contrast so things like blacks take on a slightly grey/bluish tint. For people who watch a lot of videos this is something to consider.

What is particularly jarring is the transition from the outside glossy screen to the inner matte screen.

Samsung makes the best matte screens on OLED TVs. Totally eliminates glare and reflections. But it suffers from the slight loss in contrast and colour wash out. LG, with their G6 OLED TV, has a glossy screen but with an anti-reflective coating that does a good job of glare and reflection reduction.

Even if I wanted the iPhone Duo, it would be hard for me to live with an aggressive matte screen. I think this alone will dissuade some people. Not that I think this will have too much of an affect on sales, but most people do not use devices with matte screens and I don’t see a case where people opt for matte over glossy with anti-reflective coatings if they have a choice. Very different experience and in many ways a worse experience.

We can call matte screens what they really are: sandpaper. It’s a roughed surface with divets etched in to absorb/refract light.

I dont think it will even see version 2. This website thought the iPhone Air would fly off the shelves too, and look how that went. Gimmicks always get people excited at reveal, but it doesn't mean people will actually buy it. People just like to gossip and debate.

I am probably in a target group for the Duo. Bad eyesight, so even a Pro Max is too tiny, and with an economy that would allow me to buy one, if I did prioritize it.

I won't, a normal iphone is not particularly sturdy. Only my latest one has survived unharmed for almost four years and that is only thanks to an extra thick silicon/plastic/glass cover.

But I see it certainly has it uses. Not as an everyday mobile, but in those instances you need a bigger screen and an ipad is too big to bring. Not a big market, but even a tiny fraction of the global mobile market is way bigger than most medium sized companies dream of. Just like the AVP, it depend on your sales expectations. The AVP sold about 600K, that is a huge number for such a limited niche device. The Duo will sell good, in its niche, but far from the Max Pro.
