The reason to exist is blindingly obvious: it's an iPad you can keep in your pocket. Whether it succeeds or not will depend on execution and whether its attractive to enough people at the $2000 price point, but the "no reason to exist" foundation of your argument is a fail.

Mark my words, the Duo will outsell all Samsung foldables combined within 2 years
What this needed was good software, and from what I saw there are a lot of really smart software tricks on the Duo that make it very very friendly to use. As a previous Samsung Fold owner I’m very impressed

Folding smartphones never appealed to me but after seeing this, it looks like Apple **** on competitors’ 8 years worth of foldables
I watched various videos and did not see any crease except for one where it shone under a split second angle
Plus all the software integration they carefully thought of

I think this phone will do great in China and other markets where devices are status symbols. It's instantly recognizable and tells everyone you have the expensive Apple phone
It's a compromised iPad with a max screen size not even at the Mini level. And a screen that is deep matte hazy as hell.

Still not entirely convinced on foldable myself. Not only does it cost more [3499AUD] - i much rather put that $$ towards my Mac Studio instead which I can beat and run to death as it's a thermal king...
But at least I would consider the 18 Pro Max - largest battery, 50% in 15 minutes, variable aperture lens [which i been wanting also] over my 16 Pro Max - which ill give to my mother, who will find it overkill but she'll use the phone for years to come even if software updates stop.

I don't think they had time to showcase everything. They didn't mention MagSafe either but it's supported.
The assumption is anything you can already do on an iPad mini, you can do just as well on the Duo, including emails, word processing, note taking, etc.
BUT you can carry it in your pocket. And, we will see how compromised it is. You don't know.

As a current Samsung foldable user, I'm very happy with a lot of the stuff that Apple announced with today's Duo, keep pushing forward friends and I will be watching user experiences across the forum.

Honestly, I find all phones too big now for one-hand use. Same goes for pocketability (women's clothing). My purse can fit the 11" iPad Pro so the size of the Duo isn't an issue.
The matte screen is actually a plus for me. I buy matte screen protectors for my iPads.
It's not even that much pricier compared to my current EDC ($999 256GB iPhone Air + $949 512GB cellular iPad mini = $1948 vs. $2199 512GB iPhone Duo).
Alas, the OLED display is likely to give me migraines so the Duo is a pass for me.

My initial reaction when watching the live feed this afternoon was: It’s too bulky (e.g., too wide when folded) if your primary purpose is…a phone. It does make a phone much more usable, but at the expense of bulk.

The Duo screen is smaller than the Mini's, and that does factor into productivity. Also, while Apple doesn't make a Magic Keyboard for the Mini, there are those types of integrated keyboard cases with trackpad for the Mini, turning it into a much more capable productivity machine. This is another compromise and drawback of a device like the Duo: It won't readily accommodate integrated accessories like a magic keyboard.

I was actually pleasantly surprised. Its got that apple charm and the software experience looks halfway decent. But this type of device is just not for me. As a developer, my Mac is my primary device and a foldable phone provides no new value. But I'm sure there are people drooling over it.

It's very close to the size and aspect ratio of the older 7.9" iPad mini so it's probably going to be very similar to that in daily use.

The nano tech screen is not a traditional matte finish. It doesn't obscure detail as much, but I suspect it does hide whatever "crease" is there.

You’ve never seen the screen in person I suspect. Watch some YouTube videos. That matte screen looked terrible to me.
