Well hold on there cowboy . . . what was the first touchscreen smartphone? Again, think hard, not just different. ;)

Ahhh your generalizing just like that 30 years braggart person.

iPhone was the FIRST "multi-touch" screen that actually worked as a full "multi-touch" screen device. The first "multi-touch" screen with an OS built specifically for a "multi-touch" screen. Apple nailed the OS for a "multi-touch" screen to work as seamless as possible with the core apps that were developed for a "multi-touch" screen.

I dont know the iPhone is kinda dead to me, I'm looking for something else. It may be the best phone out there for many - but its just not cutting it for me any more. Maybe next year wont be an incrimental update. Basic things such as being able to put shortcuts to settings such as wifi and bluetooth are still sorely missing. At least the copy/paste/mms has been fixed.

I think Apple need to work hard on the next phone, they need to make a big advance to keep with the high expectations of its customer base. Yeah I appreciate its probably the most advanced phone out there but come on, the "upgrades" really should have been taken care of last year. I'm still waiting for them to "think different" instead of "fix what we should have had in the box anyway". Know what I mean?

Should the Pre also have had video out of the box? Why about 16 gig? What you said can be used to describe every single device ever made.

I think Palm's biggest mistake was releasing the Pre just two days before Apple held WWDC 2009. Sure, it wasn't certain that Apple would be upgrading the iPhone, but it almost went without saying. All it took was for Apple to release moderate updates to the iPhone to completely overshadow Palm in the press.

I want the Pre to succeed. I think it looks really cool, and it will probably be a moderate success. Will it ecplise the iPhone? Certainly not. It's too late for that. At least at this point in time. The only thing competition can do is make Apple work harder and harder at making the already excellent iPhone even more amazing.

People should stop complaining and look at what this device brings to the stage. Is it doing anything unique or ground breaking? Maybe not, but it is doing things a little differently than Apple, and that's important to stimulating ideas at One Infinite Loop.

My brother just bought the Pre and loves it. One phone will not appeal to everybody. Multitasking is important to my brother, plus he likes the phones UI and keyboard.

+1 palm shot themselves in the foot by releasing it so late. The phone should have been ready when announced. If the pre came out in march a lot of folks on the fence would have jumped. Another big and stupid mistake was not adding an external microsSD card slot. That was a stupid decision.

I don't think it should have been ready the second it was announced. Remember, the iPhone was released months after Apple announced it at MacWorld 2007.

They really should have waited until after WWDC because all the people that were on the fence made Palm's release day sales lackluster because everyone wanted to wait and see what Apple would do. Hell, they maybe should have even waited until a month later once the buzz died down from the new iPhone plus the release of iPhone OS 3.0. You know that is all the tech media will be talking about next week after it is released. They might compare it to WebOS, but all the reviews will be about iPhone OS 3.0 and how much improved it is.

Nope the phone should have been out 2 months before it came out. Releasing so late made some people wait to see what apple does. It was a bad move on palms side.

Good god...how many "The Pre sux!!!!11 iPhone is the best why would anyone buy the Pre???//////omgslashes!!!!" do we need? More importantly, why do you give a damn what anyone else buys?

I'm glad the Pre exists - I think it ups the bar a little in some areas and gives people more choices - and that is always good.

For me though, the iPhone is a clear winner. What I've learned over the last week makes me feel this way even more:

First, the 3G S erodes much of the advantage of multitasking since switching between apps will be so fast it is like they never closed. Granted, you can't play Pandora and check email at the same time. But I'm hearing the Pre gets bogged down pretty quickly when you do that, so how much of an advantage is it, really?

Second, with the release of the Pre we have learned that one of its biggest advantages - the real keyboard - is utter crap. This is sad really. From all I've read, I'm sure even many physical keyboard proponents would prefer to type on the iPhone - at least it doesn't allow you to press two keys at once by mistake, and it autocorrects. One reviewer said his thumb covered four Pre keys at once. I do think the candybar style Pre coming out in 6 months or so with its wider keyboard will be much better, but for now, it's iPhone virtual keyboard FTW.

Next, I can't emphasize enough the importance of 3rd party apps in this comparison. It's a game-changer. PLEASE don't respond that "meh, most of the apps are fart apps". You don't know what you're talking about. By pure percentages, maybe, but I've got 9 pages of incredibly useful and indispensable apps, all of which are highly polished, full of functionality, and very easy to use. And I'm often blown away by specialty apps that I find on the app store - ones I'd never need but that some people would find highly useful, like professional medical apps for viewing MRI videos, checking med dosages, etc. Unbelievable. The App Store has only been around for one frickin' year.

Now the network is certainly a consideration, and this is a highly location-dependent issue. For some, Sprint is the clear winner. If so, you now have a pretty great option with the Pre. I'm truly happy for you. Where both networks are an option, I'll admit AT&T is far from perfect, but the GSM world standard they use, and the ability to use data and voice at the same time are very nice indeed. I used to think simultaneous data and voice was not a big deal, but I've used it many times to look something up while talking to my wife, grab email while in a conference call, etc. It's useful.

As many as "OMG the Iphone sucks, the Pre is coming to kill the iphone".

I just watched a Pre review video on YouTube, and my impression was that it could be a very good phone for my girlfriend. Pre is small and has rounded corners so it looks more like a hand soap and can be more appealing to women. Especially if Pre comes out in white color, I believe it can be a perfect fit for many ladies.

But, it's not my style at all. I don't like rounded corners and Pre's screen size is too small for my use. And, that's a sad news for Palm not being able to attract both genders more equally.

Nonetheless, Pre's OS is very impressive. And, it's really a very capable smart phone for people who could care less about apple apps.

Yeah those jagged corners on the iPhone could cut glass...

The stand out thing with the Pre is it shows the next 'amazing' feature that apple will suddenly be able to make possible at the next WWDC: Multitasking.

The interface of Cards reminds me a lot of the way tabs are handled in iPhone Safari.

Just like how Steve Jobs said that 3G chipsets wasted the battery when the iPhone was only 2G, just like how he said letting outside companies create native apps, apple has said that having multiple apps running at once will slow down the phone and affect the battery life.

Next year, there will be the amazing wonder of running Multiple apps at the same time on your iPhone. Just triple tap the home button and you can swipe left or right to choose the app you want to be working in and the other apps will continue to run nicely.

Sorry about the cynicism... lol

My old Sprint phone bill = 85.00
My new AT&T phone bill = 110.00

I don't mind paying it, but 25.00/month is a big difference to some. Now that Sprint has a more appealing phone to entice you, something they've lacked, it could make them a lot of money.

iPhone 8GB 200.00 cheaper? Make that back in 8 months.

WRONG iphone 8GB 99$ with 2year contract

I am sick and tired of people wanting a removable battery on the iPhone. I've owned a lot of cellphones and the last phone that I regularly swapped the battery on was the Motorola MicroTAC on Telus but that was because the battery life was horrible.

I never mentioned video or capacity, neither matter to me. Lets face it, there are cheap Nokias that have video expandable memory. Actually most of what should have been in last years phone has been rectified in 3.0. Maybe there are good reasons for that [not having been implimented earlier], I'm sure we will never know. There is no such thing as the perfect phone, the iPhone, for all intents and purposes, is probably the closest we are gonna get but I expected more from this years model, after all, last years was more of a manufacturing cost cutting excercise than an upgrade.

What you said can be used to describe every single device ever made.

Which part specifically?

I have a 3 year old E61 that can run a browser, a java game and an e-book reader fine with WiFi and BT enabled. Sure it puts a strain on the battery but, hey we have chargers. At least I have the choice. I'd say multitasking will be part of 3.1 or 3.2, My guess is the iPhone can handle running multiple apps fine (voice memo already runs in b/g??) and that they are just ironing out the kinks. hopefully. Seems like a no-brainer, after all they are trying to tout the phone to businesses as well! You could even incorporate a 2 finger swipe to move to another app. Double tap the home key to bring up running programs? Could be an option instead of itunes / favourite numbers. the possibilities are endless - this forum is full of good ideas that could make the iPhone even more untouchable.

pre is more social than iphone. and will evolve like any platform

What the heck does this mean? Its a phone, not a buddy to go drinking with.

Besides, the iPhone has more consumer friendly features then the Pre.
Music store
App store with apps
Ease of operation, the typical user can easily start using the iPhone w/o too much fuss. From what I've read you need to review the docs or videos on the pre to figure out some of the features

The Pre has email, like the iPhone, webos with multitasking (and the short battery life to prove it) and some other nice features that pale in comparison to the iPhone, like the physical keyboard that people are complaining is too small for actual usage
