I stopped jailbreaking my phone since iOS 5.1 came out. I'm a weirdo that wants the newest updates all the time. And I got sick of having to wait for a new jailbreak.

Plus I didn't use much of the hacks anyways. Nor did I download cracked apps.

Why would anyone limit themselves to stock iOS versus the tremendous benefits of jailbreak? Especially given how safe and easy it is to simply restore your device

As I mentioned in another thread, I'd do it in a second to an iPod/iPad, however the "safe and easy restore" does absolutely nothing for me if my main communications devices starts having problems. I work professionally for a philanthropic investment company and it's not going to fly if I have to say that I can't be reached on my cell because it's restoring, ran out of battery, or one of the other multitude of small glitches that can occur with jailbreaking. Again, I see the benefit, but the potential risk for being without my phone for even 30 minutes just simply doesn't cut it for me.

Also the simple arrogance of assuming that JB is better than stock is a bit amusing, if not just off putting.

I still don't know exactly but from what I've been reading...

I don't need free Apps. I don't use the features it does like FaceTime over 3G, etc.

This article came up on Zite app. Why are we against paying for $0.99 cents Apps but are willing to pay for $7 for Latte (Starbucks).

Even with my S3/android, I can't bother with Rooting/ROM's.

What phantom "security issues" are you even talking about? You got a source for that?

Changing the core of your OS with unverified code found on an unofficial website is the epitome of insecurity. Not to mention the risk you take on your PC/Mac by installing and running the jailbreak software, or the additional risk incurred by the ability to install unverified apps on the phone.

No source is required, it's common sense.

The answer is simple--most iPhone owners including myself just don't care--my phone is fine the way it is for what I do.

This.

My iPhone has been JB'd before prior to iOS5. The only app I had on there that's not in the App Store was BiteSMS. I really don't need to text someone back from the lock screen (although it is a nice feature) and I didn't have another JB app on there, so I just decided to forgo the JB and return to stock.

i dont NEED to jailbreak my phone, its a want.

I can suffice with stock iOS, but i can better use my phone the way i want to with a Jailbreak.

1. Quickreply on sms (bitesms etc) . I hate having to switch apps while watching a movie, unlock my phone etc.
2. Facetime over 3g.
3. NcSettings. I looooove being able to turn my wifi off/brightness real quick.
4. Download large apps without wifi
5. Watch Netflix in HD/ Youtube (make it think its wifi)
6. Break the folder rules.
7. Weekillbackground apps notification center widget, Kills all background apps
8. Change my default browser to chrome
9. Nitrous (allows chrome to use nitro java script just like Safari) so much faster
10. Download manager
not so important.

11. theme **** 5X5 icon layout, scrolling dock etc. Change carrier logo

Like i said all these things i could live without if i had to, but to ME they make my iOS experience even better. So i easily plug my phone in and click jailbreak.

@ people who feel it slows down their phone, the only time ive had issues slowing down my phone is using winterboard.. thats it. I dont use winterboard so that solves it for me

Whenever I jailbroke, a few weeks later it would be super slow. Simply from new installing lots of crap that's simply not needed - but I see it on cydia and think "ooh that looks cool". Although theming really did slow the phone down so I stayed away from that after learning early on.

Infact, if ever I jailbreak now, it's to patch commcenter and enable tethering natively - that's all.

Yup, my phone acted very slow after a jailbreak. Keeping stock for best performance!

Issues restoring iOS? Huh? Plug in your phone -> Click restore -> Done
I did a tethered jailbroke my iPhone 4 a while back and although it was cool while it lasted, I started to experience problems, I decided to restore the phone using iTunes, and was unable to. Itunes ended up deleting all my videos, contacts, and pictures.

That will be the last time I ever jailbrake my phone. Goes to show how unreliable these jailbreaks can be. My advice would be NOT to jailbreak your iDevice and use iOS as intended.

If you mod like a madman then you can lose some performance. Nothing has persuaded me to Jailbreak, I don't want to fiddle with theming my phone or downloading cracked apps. Personally, I don't believe in stealing from developers and always pay for my app purchases.

Oh yeah, and I don't wanna revert to update firmwares.

I use to jailbreak my phone all the time... In fact, I would never update to the newer iOS until a jailbreak was released. I was all about the tweaks and themes. Lots of themes. I'm really over all that now, and it's nothing exciting anymore. I actually prefer the stock look over a theme. So now I just stick with the stock look and feel. It does everything I need and I'm perfectly happy with it.

The thing I miss most about that app was being able to send a text at a certain time. I talk to a few people who are 6 hours behind me and do not always remember to text them. It was really nice to type a text and then pick a time to send it.

Currently JB'd, might go back to stock. I only have it for a few tweaks, no themes but it has slowed down quite a bit.

I use it for work, and I can't do anything that could even be perceived as posing a security risk. Also, stock iOS does everything I need at this point. I'm not risking stability to install a theme or whatever.

As previously stated, because of the title and OP, the burden of proof in this thread lies with those who are for JB'ing,
You use this phrase in a confrontational manner, then claim others are juvenile? WTF do they teach in college these days?
It's refreshing to read a good debate on this subject.
Yeah. Got one somewhere?

Sometimes common sense is wrong. Like in this case. Everything you just said is user-controlled. So, where is the issue? User could also fling the phone at a brick wall. Wall's fault? Maybe these hapless people you are apparently referencing don't actually need to have a $650 phone if it's that dangerous for them.
Money aside, what customization benefits are there that are useful?
  • Number 1 item is toggles for me. I constantly need to switch wifi and bt on/off. Digging for these 2 particular items in Settings is painful, I just have them in Notification Center for easy access. Including on the lock screen via Intelliscreen, for ridiculously easy access.
  • BiteSMS is superior to Messages (for its customization), although it's still missing a couple things.
  • Landscape orientation lock. WTH isn't that an option on the phone?
  • Hiding Apple's apps I don't use, I've already got too many icons on 4 home screens. Including Newsstand. Yes, it is that annoying.
  • Various choices for faster dialing. These devices do so much, getting back to it being a phone can really be a pain, esp from sleep. I use Cydialer to call straight from lock screen.
  • I haven't used it too much recently (a bit with iFile), but actual access to the file system when necessary. It took 3 years before one of my apps ($20 app, from AppStore) was able to handle this properly on its own. Glad I was jb on my iPod in 2008, used ssh back then. (and changed from 'alpine' many moons before it was a news story)
  • Little tweaks like being able to change the name of an app on home screen, altering the particular icons allowed to be shown in the status bar, etc.
  • Still waiting on a hardware product I want, but: game emulators. I did snag iMAME from App Store before Apple pulled it, though.

Additional thoughts:
My advice is to stay away from Winterboard or other dramatic "look" tweaks like unlimited items in a folder. These are what can slow down a phone, even make it crash-prone. This is where Apple has excelled, keeping the usability high in their OS, don't screw with it.

Personally, anytime I see someone that claims all jb-ers are pirates, all that comes to mind is that person must be a pirate themselves. Why else would it be on their mind? It's not on mine.

It does take a bit of research into apps found on Cydia sometimes, to weed out the crap. But you know what, it takes quite a bit to sift through the hundreds of thousands in App Store, too.

What in the world does that mean? Since you lack integrity (with respect to this issue), anyone that is against infringing on other's rights must lack integrity as well? That's some self-serving BS there.

I prefer stock for security reasons.

however!

the only reason I JB was because my power button broke. So now I'm using activator to power down and lock my phone when not in use.

Seems to me that the big appeal of jailbreaking is to get something that other people have to pay for, for free. Wow, that's super cool of you. Can't afford to pay the extra $xyz for tethering? Well thanks for bogging down the cell system without paying your extra part. Don't want to pay for apps? Thanks for hurting the development industry. Don't want to pay for facetime over cell data? Thanks for effectively stealing from the rest of the people who do. Do you play pirated movies and music on your jailbroken iphone?
/rant

Also- if you can afford an iphone AND an ipad, you can probably afford tethering if you really needed it. Otherwise, you're not entitled to squat, pal. I can't afford an Aston Martin, doesn't mean I go steal one because "hey it's ridiculous an aston martin costs this much der!"

Was reading this thread, registered just to quote this post and note that it was conveniently glossed over.

I believe it is x-evil-x who continues to extoll the virtues of stealing bandwidth, claiming he doesn't like wasting money, giving it away to the big greedy corporation, and that we're all stupid for not stealing and getting free tethering.

I find that argument impossibly stupid. You still pay for service and unlimited data, you still give your service provider a lot of money every month, but you feel like a rebel by saving $20 and stealing tethering?

If you feel so strongly about giving money to these greedy corporations, maybe you're better off with an iPod touch used strictly on wifi and a cheap prepaid flip phone?

Sure I'm being confrontational; the whole thread is confrontational: the entire premise being that JB'ing is the rational thing to do. However, this logic is flawed because I (and many others judging by the numerous posts) have yet to see any compelling evidence as to why we ought to JB (much less why this ought to be a foregone conclusion).

So if this is "confrontational" to you, then be it: I'm confronting the assumptions that the OP was making.

The "juvenile" accusation was made towards the sense of entitlement that pervades the threads/comments of those who say they JB b/c of tethering (against their TOS & contracts). Now to be clear, I think ALL of the cell carriers are money-grubbing corporations who want nothing more than to squeeze every last penny out of the whole lot of us, but for me, this doesn't justify doing something unethical just b/c I personally believe an injustice is being done. That's like my daughter defending her biting a kid in the head b/c he took her toy. ;)

I lack integrity? Let's just put all these words in order....

  • I claim that piracy never enters my mind.
  • You claim that means I lack integrity.

So....either you think only pirates have integrity, or you didn't read my comment very well. Or you don't know what 'integrity' means.

This is what I mean, I can't explain any better than this:

(you'll need to watch the whole episode)

I'm happy with the way my phone works, I do not need to customize it; for me it is perfectly functional in the way it was made.

Besides, I like to pay for what I use.
