This is a really good question.

I enabled it a while ago but don't see the "AT&T Wi-Fi" status, then I realized I am at work. We cannot access personal Mail because the port is blocked, and now this likely isn't working for the same reason.

So much for getting phone coverage at work deep inside a building. Sucks.
To test, put your phone in airplane mode then turn on WiFi. If you're not blocked you will be able to force your phone onto the WiFi network.

If this is indeed the case (which I have no reason to doubt your statement), than this is exactly as I suspected from Ralph and company. They found a way to F'k everyone anyway. I don't have HD voice in my area (testing T-mobile currently btw), so I will have to keep my microcell anyway w/ATT if I choose to keep them.

ATT just loves to push the envelope on you can "IF"...

ATT HD != ATT WiFi Calling, just some backend support of the phone means your phone has to be HD capable (which most recent iPhones are). You can call/text using Wifi Calling without people needed to be on AT&T.

I'm curious about using a VPN as well. Not sure if you'd be successful though.

Curious here as well. I run a home VPN and travel abroad quite a bit. I did notice however the location geofencing symbol on my status bar while testing this new feature. I am afraid it might be gathering location data from nearby WiFi networks and/or the GPS chip thus will still not work out of calling area (internationally).

I've been using it since it was on beta, and I can say it's great! At work i have lousy to no coverage in the building (building is probably 50+ years old, so calls don't penetrate easily) and this has made it possible to still use the phone! Only thing I'd like is when it's on WiFi to always enable Wifi Calling, not just when the signal gets to a certain level of weakness; I assume that's a carrier setting.

I also have never understood the "great now I'm paying them and my ISP for service they should provide" statements... Sure it'd be awesome to have 5 bars everywhere I go, but sometimes that's not possible, especially when the building kills the signal and the municipality won't allow companies to install towers for aesthetic reasons.

Why is it that when TMobile launched WiFi calling, everyone was hailing it as the best thing since sliced bread, but it's suddenly a different tune when AT&T launches it?

A major point that needs to be raised is that over 100 million customers are just fine and dandy on AT&T's network without the need for wifi calling.

If TMobile didn't have wifi calling, a significant portion of their subscribers would be screwed due to their shoddy coverage.

lol at AT&T having crummy coverage, too. Ive been out many place in BFE and have LTE. I think twice in the last couple of years Ive had no coverage. We also just got HD Voice and its amazing.

have always had excellent att coverage here, inside and outside of buildings, so im not sure i even need it. what are you guys entering in the 911 info section? home address?

can't get it to take street address, no matter what letter/number I put in, I get the red error tab...

I could always make phone calls over WIFI, so why is this special?
I guess you are talking about google voice?
this lets you answer your sim card phone number any place (inside the US) were there is wifi and no cellphone coverage from anyone not just another apple device. Say a big brick building, underground like subways, etc etc

I travel to Toronto a few times a year, and I was hopping this would allow me to make calls over Wi-Fi, but judging by the comments here, I guess that is not possible. Bummer.

I get great cell signal at home and work. So unless traveling (in the US) and on Wi-Fi, it's not super useful for me. :(
What about if u turn on airplane mode and turn on wifi? I know the att logo still comes up but can someone confirm if it works ?

This is so weird. I have an ATT iPhone 5s running iOS 9.1 (I'm a public beta tester). When I go to settings -> phone under the calls section it doesn't even have the "wifi" option listed. Why would that be?

Does this mean that I will be able to place and/or receive phone calls over Wi-Fi when I have Airplane Mode on with Wi-Fi enabled?

att logo will not come up in airplane mode w wifi on.

It was terrible for both my wife and I during the trial period. Tons of dropped calls and many times when one person couldn't hear the other. We ended up turning it off.

Was the trial time intended for tech fixing? Any chance that it actually works now? I honestly doubt we'll bother trying again. It was a frustrating week neither of us wants to repeat.
