I upgraded my iPhone 3G to 4.0.1 and it searches for a wifi connection but never finds one. I bought it May 2009. Apple won't hear my problem unless I pay for support. I know it is the upgrade that caused the problem. Not happy with Apple.

Did you call them or go to nearest Apple Store and make appointment w/Genius bar? ...if you called them, they will not help you, but your chances are 10x better if you go to the Genius bar at an Apple Store!

Same Here.....

Upgraded to 4.0.1 and now wished I hadn't. Wi-fi went out on Sunday for no reason. Have not been able to get it to work. Spent a cumulative of 2 hours on the phone with AT&T and Apple. Done all the possible restores and resets...include turning airplane mode on and off....still no luck.

Final conclusion by Apple is that it is a hardware issue. Sigh. I am hoping that the next update will fix it. If not, I am going to hold out for them to fix the iPhone 4 before upgrading phones. Or if it is confirmed that Verizon will have the iPhone.

In the mean time.....:(:confused::(:confused:

U R gonna think I'm nuts....FREEZER REBOOT LOL!

I was so mad about the wifi getting broken on my iPhone 3G after upgrading to 4.0.1. I tired everything. I thought for sure going back to 3.1.3 would do the trick but...it didn't (just like others are saying). So then I read this wacky thread about putting your phone in the freezer for 5 minutes...thought it was just someone messing with us. I figured I would try it and it would either work or I would just laugh at myself......IT FRIGGIN WORKED!!! Who thinks of this stuff??? It kinda makes sense if the chip overheated after 4.0.1...but I gave it little chance of working.

Here is exactly what I did:

Went back to 3.1.3 firmware
Put my phone in a ziploc bag and put in the freezer for about 5 minutes
Pulled it out of the freezer and did a reset of the network settings (Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings)
The phone will do its thing and reboot
Now go into your WiFi and try to reconnect

SUCCESS!!! I hope it works for you, but if it doesn't it was probably worth the shot. ;)

Bummer....it appears this fix is only temporary. I lost my WiFi again...put it in the freezer again and got connection then lost it again...

Spent a cumulative of 2 hours on the phone with AT&T and Apple.

I have heard so many times of people calling and getting little results...just take the thing to the nearest AppleStore Genius Bar and tell them it was fine before you updated to iOS4, tell them you tried various things and you called and they THINK it's a hardware issue (you cannot make this claim without physically checking it out...for them to tell you it is a hardware issue is a cop out), but you KNOW that you did not have this problem until you updated the SOFTWARE!

I only go to the Genius Bar for any Apple issues, you will get 10X better results taking it in.

Hey Johnrob48, so have you tried to take it in to the AppleStore Genius Bar as I previously suggested?

Apple phone support only lasts for the first 90 days after purchase, but I have had great results going to the AppleStore Genius Bar--read my other posts on this thread---take it in, don't try calling again, just take it to Apple!! (For me it is a 2 hour drive to the nearest AppleStore, but well worth the trip!)

My iPhone was out of warranty and I did not get AppleCare for it, but they helped me anyway! --read my previous posts!

I went to the Apple Genius bar yesterday and I was calm and just explained that I did not have AppleCare but have had no problems w/phone until I put iOS4 on it. Also told him everything I had tried to do to get it working again. He checked it out, did something to it (also helping someone else w/their MacBook), asked if he could take it to back to open it and check it out. He came back with a new iPhone 3G!! :D I didn't have to make a fuss at all! ...my guess is they know there is an issue (he said iOS4 may have inadvertently turned wifi off) ... in any case I have a new working iPhone 3G w/3.1.3 OS on it, and it will stay that way until 4.1 comes out. The biggest thing I notice is that GPS sucks...they improved the algorithm in iOS 4 for location services (or the GPS function)...all my apps that use this worked better in iOS4, but I'm not taking any chances-keeping 3.1.3 for now.

For those of you that have iOS 4 on iPhone 3G and only problem is it is slow, he did mention that, if you turn off spotlight search it will act normally instead of being slow.

I'm thinking they have an overstock of iPhone 3G since they no longer sell it, they are worth nothing to them, and to give me a new one is probably a tax write off. (now I can wait 6 months until I get full discount for upgrade to iPhone4)

(I know this does not help if you have jailbroken your phone, but if you have jailbroken your iPhone 3G, do not update to iOS4 until 4.1 comes out!).

I am only referring to iPhone 3G, not iPhone 3Gs.

I've had the same problem and my phone is basically useless without wifi. So I went to the Apple Genius Bar today and explained the situation as you did. My warranty was expired and I had no applecare plan. VOILA! The employee came out with a new iPhone 3G no questions asked.

My 3G is also out of warranty and when I took it to the local Genius Bar, they insisted that it was a hardware issue and told me it would cost me $199 to get it fixed. Screw that! Maybe I should go back and insist it's a software issue and try again to get a new one?

Gotta love the message boards eh? I was just prompted by itunes to upgrade to 4.01 and thought hmmm iOS4 was such a colossal failure for my 3G it turned it into a SLUG I better check and see if 4.01 has issues which here we are big surprise.

Then i find this comment here;

For those of you that have iOS 4 on iPhone 3G and only problem is it is slow, he did mention that, if you turn off spotlight search it will act normally instead of being slow.

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!! My 3G is Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay faster now thanks a freakin TON!!!!!

Its still slower than 3.xx but its at least useable now the thing was a complete piece of crap until i turned off spotlight features. Anyways thanks guys I finally seem to win one with this thing.

I have to say as a longtime Mac fan i have not at all been impressed with the issues I've had with the iPhone itself. Very glitchy and piss poor battery life etc etc etc.

I'd have thought I'd died and gone to heaven if I hadnt had so much Blackberry experience. Never knew how good i had it LOL

Wifi working permanently now...

I was so mad about the wifi getting broken on my iPhone 3G after upgrading to 4.0.1. I tired everything. Wanted to post an update to my original post and thought it would be better to just add a new one (after making sure the fix was more permanent). After going through the freeze and reset network settings about 4 times, i can report that my WiFi is working just like new now. Each time it got a little better and now havent had an issue at all for 5 days. I guess persistance finally paid off. If your phone is no longer under warranty...its worth a try. If it doesn't work the first time...try it again...just be smart and dont leave your phone in the freezer for an hour or something and make sure you put it in an air tight enclosure of some type to keep moisture out...5-10 mins should do the trick.

Not sure if it is a hardware or software issue. My money is actually on both. My theory is the upgrade made the chip set start running hot because the problem was not immediate. Also, there were times when my WiFi was totally greyed out as if I didn't have it at all. I have seen other posts that say that the the phone has a lot of "safety" switches built in that will turn certain functions off when the device runs too hot. I was also having issues with charging the battery when I plugged it in. That has also been resolved now by cooling down the phone multiple times and booting back up.

All I know is after I cooled it (freezer time) multiple times everything seems to be working like new again.

I just took my 3G 16Mb back to the iStore in Whitehall PA.

They claim they NEVER heard of such an issue. I asked to be able to show them all the posts including Yahoo News article. They said it didn't matter because anyone can post anything on the internet. "Even Yahoo?" I said.

Then they said, OK, we'll take a look. They saw my wetness indicators were tripped. Then they said they cant help me at all cuz it got wet. I said yes it did, almost 2 years ago and it never malfunctioned from that.

Then he started babbling in some strange elfish/troll/Apple language about what they may be able to do for me but it will cost me more $ and I just took it out of his hands and walked away. I have an iPhone 4 so I don't NEED this one but wanted to give it to my son as a glorified iTouch. Of course it is useless now without wifi anyway. I know he will be able to listen to music and D/L apps thru itunes and have a camera....etc.... but it's not the same.

I will try to tell it on CL for $200 without a SIM....maybe I could get rid of it.

He didn't need to ask questions, it's a manufacturing and materials defect. If anyone runs into a problem where Apple won't give you a free replacement you can reflow your iPhone or iPod Touch PCB in the oven.

I also posted a video on how I fixed my iPhone wifi problem on YouTube.

I did the fix about a week ago and my iPhone is better than it ever was. WiFi picks up faster than it ever did, the phone runs cooler because the micro-fissures were fused, and my battery life is longer because it runs more efficiently. That's what happens when the design is good but the manufacturing is flawed. Fix the mistake of manufacturing and you'll have a nice phone again.

They checked mine and the wetness indicator must not have been tripped, but if it's been working well over a year since and the problem started only after updating the software, maybe try talking to the manager, push the issue that, even though it got wet, it worked fine until you updated the software, and that other users have reported the same issue with the 3G iphones. The "genius" you talked with is underinformed, Apple knows there are issues with iOS4 & the 3G iPhones. OR If you live in a city with more than one apple store (Portland OR where I just moved from has about 4 or 5 in the metro area) I would try another store before CL. I'm not sure why people would get different responses from different stores, but I guess it happens. OR maybe another day & time and talk with a different "genius"? Maybe I did better at the Charleston SC store because it serves a large rural area, IDK?

I'm sorry, but I don't believe this B.S.

Anyone reading these should kindly DISREGARD! If not done correctly you will trip the condensation sensor in the phone, void the warranty and Apple will be less likely to help you.

But, I digress, I guess if you have a "jailbroken" iphone you might try anything

ARE YOU KIDDING? what else will these freaks come up with? Put it in the FREEZER...no put it in the OVEN... O M G shut the ******* up!!:mad: ...these freaks just want to see how far you will go to ******* up your phone!

Yes, if you've had no issues with it until you updated to iOS4, then INSIST that it is a software issue, that, before updating to iOS4 you had no problems with the phone, now, only after updating to iOS4, wifi is not working. ...maybe try talking with a manager, ...if that doesn't work, maybe raise a stink, talk loudly (loudly enough for others to hear without actually shouting) about how lousy their service is, how they broke your phone and won't fix it and you'll never buy an apple product again! (I didn't have to do any of this btw, maybe, IDK, maybe I was just lucky??)

benji888 is right about this issue. My 3g stopped working with wifi with 4.0.1. However, the just-released 4.0.2 update fixed this for me. Unfortunately, 4.0.2 will also kill jailbreaking (which I want to try with my 3g since I'm not using it as a phone anymore) so you could also downgrade to 4.0 and have working wifi.

4.0.2 Still no WiFi

I went last Thursday 8/5 and no luck....Genius dude said that since I was out of warranty I would have to buy a new one. Not ready to commit to iPhone 4. Really wish they would just replace it. Need wifi in order to work. sigh.

The iPhone WiFi Oven Trick works. Some people have fried their PCBs and others have fixed them. We're in the middle of pinning down the details and techniques to do it. One very useful post by a member on the Apple Support Forums gave detailed feedback on baking his iPhone that you can read here http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12093440#12093440

Neither those advocating the Freezer or the Oven are interested in seeing anyone bugger their phone. On the contrary, everyone involved is giving feedback to help everyone get their wifi back.

Yay!!!!!

I went to a different Apple Store and the manager at this one in Denver totally rocked it. She was so cool and had a tech look at my phone and replaced it with a new 3G. Now that is awesome customer service. I even brought in a printed copy of this thread to show that I'm not the only one having wifi connectivity issues with iOS 4.0.1.

The tech tried to do the iOS downgrade and it did not work. I suspect that there is something with iOS 4.0.1 that fries or dislodges the wifi chip in the phone.

So happy now! Wonder if this will start wifigate. LOL!

I have the same problem. My 3G wifi greyed out after upgrading to iOS4. I went to a so called "Genius" at the Boston Apple Store who wiped everything and did a restore -- despite my having told him that I had already tried this to no avail. Unsurprisingly there was still a "No Wifi" sign. He just said it's a hardware problem and that because it's out of warranty there's nothing I can do. Well that is simply not good enough. If I had caused this wifi-blackout myself, that would be a different story. But when all I did was upgrade the software -- something which I am expected to do -- it is egregious form for Apple to wash their hands of me.

Do people have any advice. My iPhone has been partly disabled by a software upgrade. It may in fact be a hardware problem, but that problem has been caused by the software upgrade.

Bitterly disappointed in treatment by Apple,

Claude
same crap for me no extended warranty so $269 to repair forget it I'll just upgrade to iPhone 4...maybe

same crap for me no extended warranty so $269 to repair forget it I'll just...

don't give up, try again at another store, or just a different time of day and day of the week and get a different "genius" to help you, explain to them that you know the phone was fine before updating to the new software, that it is a software issue and not hardware and insist that you are not the only one that had this issue. Apple knows there are issues with the 3G iPhone and this software update, and they were selling that phone in June, they can't just abandon it. (I had no warranty either, please read my other posts in this thread)

iphone 3G's wifi not working after iOS4 updates

After I updated my iphone to iOS4 the wifi stopped working. I thought they would fix it in the next update so I just updated my iphone to 4.02 and the wifi still does not work:mad:.

After browsing this thread and some other threads on apple's official forum. It pretty apparent the ios4 update scews up the iphone 3G's wifi:mad:.

P.S

i refuse to toss my iphone in freezer or boil it in the oven!

Wow. I tried this exactly like you said and so far it's working! I took my iPhone to the Apple store and they told me they couldn't do anything because my water sensors were tripped like some people have said. I tried this freezer trick as a last resort and so far I've been able to connect to wifi when I am really close to my wifi router. I'm freezing my iPhone right now trying to improve the distance. I will post how it turns out in a bit but so far good news!:):D
