3G wifi Dead

Same story here - since 'upgrading' to iOS4, wifi has been dead. Went to the Apple Store to have the Genius confirm that the wifi chip seems to be damaged. Since the phone is out of warranty, I can either pay 199 to upgrade to an iphone 4 or pay 199 to have the phone replaced (with another 3g) out of warranty. I am so pissed off at this point that they refused to take any responsibility for this. I have made an appointment for another store to see if I will receive any joy from them. This time I will bring prints of this and other forums where the same issue has been discussed/confirmed and make a stink to management if necessary.
Out of curiosity, I put the phone in the freezer for about 10 min, after which I was able to see the local wifi. This gives me hope that the chip may not be destroyed, but rather turned off due to overheating as previous suggested. If so, a software fix could do the trick - I just hope it comes soon!

iOS 4.1 is out...

I can't believe I'm going to do this, but I am going to update my iPhone 3G to iOS 4.1 (from 3.1.3). ...the main reason for this is because of how much better GPS worked w/iOS 4 (before going back to OS 3.1.3). ...here goes, I will let you know tomorrow how the update goes (I am going to connect and get it started w/iTunes and go to sleep, check it in the morning).

iOS 4.1 works great! :D

the upgrade took quite a while on iTunes, it looks like it isn't doing anything at one point when, in fact, it is...I recommend doing this when you either go to sleep or can leave the phone connected to your computer for some hours...however, it seems they have managed to fix the bugs!

Everything either runs as well as or better than software 3.1.3..."location services"--apps that use GPS--the GPS function works MUCH faster. No issues at this point. Netflix app works fine. Definitely much improved from previous released iOS4, in fact, it feels like everything works either slightly faster or on up to much faster than before. :)

If its software why didnt it happen to millions of other iphone 3G users?
I dont buy it either:D

Ok Apple apologist, explain this to me then. My original iPhone 3G with 3.x worked perfectly with my home network. I downgrade from 3.x by installing 4.x and the wifi now has issues with asking for the password every few minutes.

Same network, same router settings, same password and yet, it asks me every few minutes. I did a complete restore....wiped the phone clean as if it was right out of the box. That didn't help. Then I went to an Apple store and paid, yes I paid, for a replacement and want to know something interesting? That "new" phone is doing the same thing.

Now here is the kicker....

My iPhone 4 works perfectly. Same network, same router settings, same password.

Apologize that away all you will.

Dowgraded to 3.1.3 and I've got my brand new 3G iphone back :)

I've had nothing but trouble with my iphone 3G since the 4.0 upgrade. First, wifi stopped working, then GPS was WAY off, 3G network was insanely slow, and overall performance was crap. The latest ios4 update did increase performance a little, but was still no where close when I first bought this.

So I went ahead and downgraded to 3.1.3, and who would have thought...everything works again! Including WIFI. Amazing how a so-called hardware failure is fixed after a software downgrade.

So much for the genius bar. Seems like apple is just trying to make us upgrade.

Its hardware

the problem is caused by the 4.0 software, but it infects the hardware. idk how this happens exactly but i bought a new wifi antenna/what-ever-else-it-is thingy for $8 and replaced the one in my iphone and wifi works better than ever!
