Yeah,
Really horrible argument. As if you have to buy all four Wii motes but the PS3 or 360 ones are free.

Paul

Not a stupid argument considering that WiiMotes are pricier than 360 controllers because of the nunchuk.

It's a flawed argument, not stupid!

but I've seen folks that could tear up any keyboard and mouse player I've seen with the Xbox controller.

Paul

Maybe in la la land, or if the person on the keyboard and mouse "sucked" big time, or had to take a dump, or just killed over. :) Given that both a k+m player is about a fraction as good as the gimp-pad player -- knows the maps etc. -- mouse boy will own each time.

Console's now days have too much influence over the games I've always liked. This has lead to many sub-par PC games that weren't properly designed/optimized for its strengths, but instead around a console and its gimp-pad. Fortunately games like StarCraf 2 will be computer only and not suffer this fate worse than death.

DIE GAMEPADS DIE!!! Unless you're controlling a game like Jumping Flash.

What did you expect from a Kerryman ;)

No seriously, the 360 your more likely to play multiplayer 'online' as it is it's key strength, hence only 1 pad needed.

The wii has limited online support and so in order to play the myriad of multiplayer games that are geared you really are looking at needing extra controllers and 3 more friends.

That was the point.

So it wasn't that stupid a point at all was it.... :p

Both are worth owning in my opinion. The 360 is definitely the way to go today if you want to play FPS. The Wii will hit with some major games (Metroid Prime) and such, but not just yet. It is still new. However, with the price point of the Wii I wouldn't mind owning one and leaving the 360 for the FPS games and the likes.

Some of you guys need to get over this "halo greatest game ever" crap.....standard FPS affair with its savior being a huge multiplayer comunity.

Now back to the question at hand.....It all comes down to you. I suggest you read up on both consoles which offer their own experience. I would say go for the 360 because it has more games and XBL is huge with a lot of supported games which on the other hand is quite weak on the Nintendo front. Wii games are not that good but there are several gems in there but for right now the wii is passable.

Bless

Yeah, I second the Halo comment from 2nyRiggz! :D I've noticed it's the younger, inexperienced gamers that linger on that game.

And speaking of younger, if I weren't as old and bitter, only had limited experience with FPS games on "consoles," I wouldn't gripe about how they suck in general, because of the inadequate controls.

All it will take is a freaking firmware update from that spreadsheet company to make things right! I hope that happens before Mass effect. =(

Input defines the game now?

Metroid (3, at least) has FPS controls. It's an FPA still. Need I bring up Oblivion, Deus Ex and Thief again?

I know, I know....when I posted this, I knew you'd say the MP3's controls are suited for any FPS, and they rock...:p

Oh and a wii doesn't add up ;)

Seriously If you want to play multiplayer, and you add 3 extra wii remotes and nunchucks and want to hook it up to your hdtv via component the Wii ends up nearly as expensive as the rest...

1x $300 wii
3 x $40 remote
3 x $20 nunchuck
1 x $30 component cable

total = $510

Wow, your slipping buddy!

First off Wii is 250

So lets set up each console with 4 controllers, and Wi-Fi, HD cable and online play for a year and game to use all those fancy controllers with.

1x $250 wii(comes with Wii sports)
3 x $40 remote
3 x $20 nunchuck
1 x $30 component cable

total = $460

PS3
PS3-500/600
3*50-Sixaxis
1*10-HDMI cable(much more if you buy in store, but lets assume we're all good shoppers)
1*60-MotorStorm
Total 720(or 760 if you buy 80Gb Model, as MotorStorm comes with it)

Xbox 360-349 or 449(again assuming we're smart shopper, we're not going to buy Core)(which has HD cables)
40*3-Xbox 360 controller
60*1 Xbox live
60*1- Gears of War
-590

In my house, to get the best out of the systems- (They all come bundled with games here so I'm excluding extra games)

Wii- £180
Extra Controllers- £17+29
=£226

360- £250
Live- £40
Extra Controller- £29
WiFi- £50
HDTV- choose your poison
=£369 for SD

PS3- £430
Extra Controller- £25
HDTV- which ever one you want
HD cables- £19
=£474 for SD

I third that comment! Halo is probably the most overrated game of ALL time, even more so than God of War! Do reviewers really like the game or are they just under so much pressure they have to give good reviews to it? It deserves a 7.0 at most, 8.0 if you have a good multiplayer community to play with.

And yeah I share your pain, consoles like the Xbox360 have ruined FPS on our PCs. Everytime I see a game come on simultaneously on PC and console I automatically know its going be a dumbed down game and suck on the PC, Bioshock is a recent clear exception but even THAT game stinks slightly of console-itis.

Leave the consoles to games that work better in gamepads like action games, driving games, adventure games, RPGs, party games, pretty much everything outside of FPS and strategy games. FPS are nice and all on a console to play but the 360 is BASED around those games and thats when it becomes a problem because the 360 is just not suitable to those types of games.

And now I'll probably get flamed but thats just what I think.

I agree with the halo comment in some ways. I don't care about the single player campaign at all, it is really just the fact that so many people play halo that makes it a great game. Halo-Xbox Live=regular FPS. XBL made halo what it is. Bungie (or whoever did the online) did a helluva job making a great online service, them and microsoft. Would I call it overated? Probably not, because the online is just that good. One could argue that 40 player online is one of a short list of features that set it apart from other FPS, but it still gets a good rating because of the online service.

BTW chone, what are you saying about God of War? Overated? I think not :p

best advice i could give you is research all three consoles and figure out which one(s) are best for YOU. to add to zap2 comment, you shouldn't rule out ps3 based off of upfront cost if you plan on using your console as an hd movie player. the ps3 is a blue ray player while the xbox 360 requires you to purchase a HD DVD add on for 170 bucks. there is no denying that xbox 360 is currently the king of the mountain but the ps3 is slowly gaining momentum with some exciting upcoming releases and the recent pricedrop. there is also the issue of hardware failures with the xbox360, one of the main reasons why i returned my xbox360 and bought a ps3. i have always found it difficult to try to compare the wii to the xbox360/ps3, its like trying to compare a motorcycle to a car.

Go with the Wii. Especially if you're on the fence with these HD gaming consoles, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Or wait for the new wave of Xbox 360s, the ones that may not get the red lights of death. The warranty is nice, but imagine waiting months for your new Xbox?

I'd say, go with the Wii, then get a 360.

Although, slimp has offered the best advice, buy what appeals to your tastes.

GimmeSlack12: I'm going on month 2 with my Wii and still playing it about once a day. If anything, the PS3 and 360 wear off much faster than the Wii. Since the Wii has diversity in titles, the other two are pretty limited with selection. 360, plenty o' boring shooters. PS3, not enough titles, but rather have since it is more reliable than the 360.

MacRumorUser: Do you really need 3 Wiimotes? If you're going to play that game, make sure you add 3 360 and PS3 controllers to be fair.

Yes - because as I clarified.

360 - your most likely to play multiplayer ONLINE and hence you only need 1 controller and a Live Account

Wii - Very few online games, all multiplayer games therefore require extra friends and extra wii-remotes & nunchucks.

I think that's fair.

I have managed with my 360 and one controller & Live for nearly the last 2 years.
The wii required me to buy 3 extra controllers in order to play multi-player party games.

all multiplayer games therefore require extra friends

Extra friends? Don't you have enough already?

Just curious. On the experience side, which system do you prefer for multiplayer? Wii with friends in house, or 360 on live with friends out of house?

To be honest they are both utterly different experiences, due to the complete different nature of the games. There's no deep GRAW or Rainbow Six kind of team work multiplayer games on the wii. There's a distinct lack of driving games too, such as Forza, Dirt or PGR... So the experience of LIVE multiplayer and Wii Party Games is poles apart.

Wii games are more - hey I look like a 'tw*t' and to be honest your probably more than half-piss*d before you start anyway which always helps the mood.

But I would say I prefer 360 mulitplayer, it's just more involving and stimulating on a 'mental' level than the Wii probably will ever be.

There's also so much more Live brings such as 'CLAN's' and then maybe a group of you meeting up and taking part in a competitive event - and you get to widen your circle of friends considerably. Talking to different people around the world can often be a pain - especially some prepubescent singing the annoying songs over and over until you boot them from the server - but you also get the oportunity to converse with people you never ordinarily would. I've had long chat's with some really nice people on there.

Wii with it's 'friends code' lockout system and lack of online games will never offer that extra level of immersion.

The Wii will never offer that extra level of immersion to you. I feel the opposite when I play an Xbox 360, the same old song and dance routine that I've done since I was 3 years old. Sit on my ass and hold a controller, get thumb cramps, get mixed up on the trigger buttons, and lose my train of thought while playing. The Wii was a breath of fresh air for me with video games. I like holding a Wiimote and a Numchuck, it feels great to be able to stretch my hands and arms apart, and not be confined to a small space. There are just so many plus', to me, the Wii has. Online play is something I don't look for in a console since I have computers for that.

Your argument is valid, but I'm going to play devil's advocate here. Did you take into account your friends may own a Wii and bring their own Wiimotes? And if the Xbox has such a great online experience, why do you need real friends when you can just hook-up with people online? Wouldn't you still feel like a "twit" for wasting all that time on any other game? Don't you have to pay to belong to Live? I used to feel that way with Final Fantasy and Metal Gear; and Halo on my Mac. Personally, I'd rather go out and get drunk than play "deep online team play."

Many gamers don't use the online functions, yes the number is higher, but the PC still dominates the online world. Plus, many people like having friends come over and play games in person. My beef with online gameplay is it can vary, no experience is the same. And LAG!

Almost forgot about this thread with all the running around I've been doing!

Yeah I personally would stick with a PC, but I have a mac, I can't be bothered to install windows and I generally use it for work.

I love playstation, although in some ways I refuse to pay £400 for one... Especially when it has only just come out (besides, my other half would probably cut my balls off if I even thought about spending that much money)...

I can say at least, I'm a lucky bloke... A woman that doesn't spend money is a gem! Even to the point where she makes sure I don't spend my money!

Hah, yea wish it was the same here. "Hey Caroline I've bought a GBC and a few games, should I spend £40 on a sealed Pokemon Crystal?", or something to that effect "Yes!"

Honestly, the 360 could be cut from my collection. I get everything from a PC and Wii right now, and DS when something big hits.

Wii60

To get the best of both worlds you need to get both. I got a Wii in launch day and have been loving it ever since. Wii sports is a great party game, Paper Mario is great and Mario Galaxy will be insane.
But I was dissappointed with many of the sports games, I was unimpressed with Tiger Woods and no NHL hockey on Wii or Skate.
The only way to satisfy my needs in this area was to get a 360. Tiger Woods 08 in HD is sweet as is Madden 08 and I can play Guitar Hero 2 now and not in 2 months from now when Guitar Hero 3 comes out for Wii. Skate and NHL 08 come out this week for the 360 and are not coming out for Wii.
The Wii is still my favorite system but 360 has the best game library right now.

Got my Wii on launch day, haven't touched it all summer. I would trade it for a 360 in a heartbeat, mainly for Forza Motorsport 2 and the upcoming... hmm... what's it called? Oh yeah.. Halo 3

If you want to play FPS, I have to recommend the Xbox 360. That really is, to an extreme, the dominant genre on the system. Bioshock and Call of Duty 4 look to be excellent, while Halo 3 looks good.

If you're looking for something different, consider the Wii. Don't be fooled by insecure teenagers; it's perfectly fine to play Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. You're playing a videogame anyway... might as well have fun doing it.
