There's also so much more Live brings such as 'CLAN's' and then maybe a group of you meeting up and taking part in a competitive event - and you get to widen your circle of friends considerably. Talking to different people around the world can often be a pain - especially some prepubescent singing the annoying songs over and over until you boot them from the server - but you also get the oportunity to converse with people you never ordinarily would. I've had long chat's with some really nice people on there.

You're not making real friends on Xbox Live.

You're not making real friends on Xbox Live.

Actually I have made 'real' friends over xbox live. When I first started playing Live, it took a while but during one session of perfect dark zero I suddenly noticed loads of Irish voices. So I began talking to the guys and they told me about an Irish group. I added them all to my friends list and over the course of time they became my online group of choice to play with.

They then told me about their clan & forum and so I checked it out. Became an active member of the clan with it's cofounders and used a lot of my design skills to help the clan with things.

Regularly talked to a few of the guys each day on MSN messenger, and soon they were arranging clan meetings and party nights.

So I went to a few of these do's and got to meet and greet the people I had been playing with over the last year or more.

And so with xbox live and its subsequent evolution, I have widened my circle of friends to people that I would never have met ordinarily in my day to day life.

It's up to the individual what they get out of it, but indeed you have to put in extra work in order to make 'friends' rather than 'live acquaintances'..

360 - your most likely to play multiplayer ONLINE and hence you only need 1 controller and a Live Account

Wii - Very few online games, all multiplayer games therefore require extra friends and extra wii-remotes & nunchucks.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Come on! Wii has you can play alone w/o online on both system(or online with Wii)...equip each system equal. Online, and 3 controller(plus the extra one that they ship with)

I suppose it depends on the person. I don't have to buy extra Wii remotes since everyone here has a Wii now, but I would have to buy Live and messaging equipment. But this is just my situation :eek:

I probably won't be getting Live once I get my 360 connected to the internet. I refuse to pay for something that I've been enjoying for free for a good decade on the PC. That and the only game I want to play online is some kind of MMO GTA styled thing, and possibly Halo 3 if the story and 4 player co-op is good.

To get the best of both worlds you need to get both. I got a Wii in launch day and have been loving it ever since. Wii sports is a great party game, Paper Mario is great and Mario Galaxy will be insane.
But I was dissappointed with many of the sports games, I was unimpressed with Tiger Woods and no NHL hockey on Wii or Skate.
The only way to satisfy my needs in this area was to get a 360. Tiger Woods 08 in HD is sweet as is Madden 08 and I can play Guitar Hero 2 now and not in 2 months from now when Guitar Hero 3 comes out for Wii. Skate and NHL 08 come out this week for the 360 and are not coming out for Wii.
The Wii is still my favorite system but 360 has the best game library right now.

HAHA! I'm getting married soon... The other half would do some serious frowning if I even thought about getting both! She is having enough of a time accept one game in the house.. The only advantage of getting a Wii is that she would play Mario (only).

If you want to play FPS, I have to recommend the Xbox 360. That really is, to an extreme, the dominant genre on the system. Bioshock and Call of Duty 4 look to be excellent, while Halo 3 looks good.

If you're looking for something different, consider the Wii. Don't be fooled by insecure teenagers; it's perfectly fine to play Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. You're playing a videogame anyway... might as well have fun doing it.

I'm into FPS and Role playing. I wouldn't dare touch RTS on a console...

Now in terms of pretty... I've just been approved (by the lady of the house) permission to go out and buy a nice 42" HD LCD...

So I'm actually starting to think about waiting until the new year to get a PS3... HMMMMM

If you're hoping the graphics of the PS3 will be better, you will be disappointed in what you get. Because most games are being built for the 360 and then later ported, the graphics are very, very comparable.

RTS on Wii might actually be decent, with the Wii-mote and all. Advance Wars (TBS, Turn Based Strategy) was really good on the DS, and Battalion Wars is a real-time version. I'll be curious to see how it is on the Wii.

I suppose I'm the opposite of you; I wouldn't dare touch FPS on a console. I only play Keyboard and Mouse, and as of last week with Metroid Prime 3, I also play with the Wii remote.

Right now the graphics look almost identical, but the exclusives do look pretty darn good in terms of what Cell can do (like Lair can have a ridiculous amount of things on the screen at once with a ridiculous view distance).

WOW! Zap you are slipping. How many Wii games can you play online? :rolleyes::rolleyes:

You can hardly compare it to the 360 and online multiplayer, doing so is just crazy.

The wii has been out for 1 year and had 1 online game
The 360 was out 1 day and had a handful. You just can't compare wii online multiplayer to the 360 period.

The Wii and developers has positioned itself as the 'party game' console, the causal enthusiast.
The 360 is all about online for the most part. So my point remains intact.

See this is the single biggest seller for the XBox... Online play <- although I think it's subscription based isn't it?

Now in terms of technical ability the PS3 wipes the floor with the XBox, graphics look the same at the moment, but from what I've seen the xbox likes to screenlag a bit? Can anyone verify that?

Now, the advantage of the Wii is my girlfriend will play mario on it at least and I wouldn't be supporting M$$...

The Xbox has great games, decent graphics and is nowhere near as pricey as the PS3.

The PS3 is gonna be awesome once people start optimizing (if that EVER happens).

Congrats man:)

I don't know how it will go in the next year or so but for right now the 360 have the edge over the 360 graphic wise but that looks like its changing...example DiRT, Skate...whos knows about AC,COD4 and UT3.

Dude make sure your TV can accept/output 480p/720p/1080i and p....you'll thank yourself in the morning.

example DiRT, Skate..

Dirt does indeed have a more consitant framerate on the ps3 version. But other than that looks identical. But since it has had 3 or 4 months longer in development it's the least we could have expected.

Why are so many PS3 version games getting released 'after' the 360 version ? MOH: AA for example by EA even...

But Skate? 360 version is still the prettier of the two according to the reviews

PS3 IGN
Graphics
Lots of aliasing and blurring mix with some spotty framerate issues. San Vanelona is still a hot city, but it has some zits.
7/10

Overall score = 8.8

360 IGN
Graphics
Great details in the environments and the character models are solid. The ragdoll physics make every bail look delightfully painful.
8/10

Overall score = 9

However I think it's always going to be the case that multiformat games, the differences are usually minimal, and will probably continue to swing back and forth.

From a technical ability standpoint (though terminology is debatable since the Wii can do stuff the other systems cannot), the PS3 and 360 wipe the floor with the Wii. But 360 against PS3? The PS3 has the better CPU and the 360 has more RAM and better GPU. soo....

Lag? Occasionally. I've seen it just as much on the PS3. Wii is so far the only current gen system that I haven't experience lag on :) cept for online lag but that's my crappy internet.

Going a bit OT- but lag always reminds me of playing games on a PC. Which is fine and that, but if I'm spending so much for one of these HD systems to match my PC's performance then I'd appreciate a little optimisation or better GPU. Lag and loading are the most biggest illusion breakers in my books, probably why I like Zelda and Metroid games so much :)

As someone else has said, the XBOX360 has a slightly better GPU whereas the PS3 has a slightly better CPU.

The difference in quality between two highly system optimised games will probably be negligible.

Many of you are right. Developers will get with the PS3 and start pushing it when they get used to it. It's the same problem the Wii has with ported Gamecube titles, companies are trying to make a quick buck.

Eventually, the PS3 will pass the 360 and be the dominant second place console, but the top dog in the graphics console race.

I'm starting to doubt the Wii's popularity will die down soon. Since I thought Wiis would be readily available about four months ago, but it's not the case, as soon as they arrive, they're gone.

Whatever Nintendo's strategy is for the Wii, keep it. To boot, the Wii has useful functions for the average person, check weather, read news, and optionals, surf the Internet (500 Wii Points) and Everybody Votes (FUN!). That's what I call great online features, and USEFUL! Xbox Live doesn't have any of those functions. The PS3, I believe, has the ability to surf the Internet out of the box; plus install any Linux-based OS.

I am interested to see if the PS3 can push past the 360 at this stage. I can see developers now settling on the 360 since it's been out so long and they've already had the chance to learn how to optimise it. Wherever the PS3 will be, the 360 will be further along (till they reach the cieling limit - of course) in the technical line of things.

What I am liking though is how Sony pumped the PS3 so much and had it fail. The fact through trying to improve the system(s) with online, better controller coming, PSP-2000 they are showing us they're not complacent. Which forces MS to bring out new features and such.
There's nothing to compete with the Wii. The core 360 is (or will be) the same price as a Wii here. Nintendo aren't sweating since they're doing well regardless.

Hahaha, I've only got enough budget for a 720p TV for the time being... I've got a wedding to pay for yet!

This is actually turning into a very good discussion! Not a single person has had an argument yet about any of the consoles :)

One thing to note about the PS3 vs the XBox 360, the memory on the PS3 is a lot better, the CPU is better... The XBox has got 512MB of Ram and that's it, shared between both the GPU and the main processor (although the GPU does have 10MB dedicated) and the PS3 all in all has the same amount (by the looks of it a bit faster) and the cell will floor a triple core powerpc:

* PowerPC-base Core @3.2GHz
* 1 VMX vector unit per core
* 512KB L2 cache
* 7 x SPE @3.2GHz
* 7 x 128b 128 SIMD GPRs
* 7 x 256KB SRAM for SPE
* * 1 of 8 SPEs reserved for redundancy total floating point performance: 218 GFLOPS

Vs the XBox
* 3 symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz each
* 2 hardware threads per core; 6 hardware threads total
* 1 VMX-128 vector unit per core; 3 total
* 128 VMX-128 registers per hardware thread
* 1 MB L2 cache

Funny enough all things said and done... How can both companies put such fast processors in and only put 512MB of memory in the machines? I know ram is expensive... But come on so much power is just wasted...

I think the Wii is boring...fun at first because of the controller's novelty factor and that's really it IMO. My friend and his fiancee got one early on and they never use it now.

I like the Xbox 360 for Burnout, Bioshock, and the fact it'll have GTA4 and Rock Star in the future (which the Wii won't). And while I don't have a PS3, I'm one of the few people who doesn't hate it.

But really we all have different tastes, plenty of people love the Nintendo franchises that they grew up on and will buy the system just for that. There's also that Wii Fit thing coming out (if it's not out already).

Er, realistically, both have 512 MB of RAM, I don't understand why you think the PS3's setup is better.
The 360 has the better GPU, the PS3 has the better CPU but its harder to write apps that actually utilize it and poorly optimized apps will run worse.

Cell does not automatically floor a triple core PowerPC; an unoptimized app will only use the single PowerPC core in the Cell, and optimized apps are really hard to write.

Funny enough all things said and done... How can both companies put such fast processors in and only put 512MB of memory in the machines? I know ram is expensive... But come on so much power is just wasted...

Without having to run an OS, with very optimized memory handling? 512 MB is plenty. Windows Vista takes up like 512 MB of RAM while idling.

I'm very much into roleplaying and fps, I like a good strategy game, but I've got a pc (mac) for that.

The thing that tears me si quite simple: The Wii looks fun, it has not got anywhere near the amount of games as the xbox.

As a owner of all 3 consoles, I can offer you some help.
For the games you mentioned, the Xbox 360 will fulfill your game requests.
The Nintendo Wii is very fun when you have friends over for Wii Sports and such, but otherwise it strictly collects dust from lack of use. It's the "Casual Gamers Console" and as such it wouldn't make you happy. The 360 on the otherhand, along with Xbox Live will make you very happy and keep you busy for quite a longtime. The Sony PS3 is a great dvd player and maybe by 2008 some good games may come out for it.

Save money on your wedding and just fly me out to shoot it :) . As long as you've paid my ticket I'll give you the files (have to get married during EPL when I can catch a Liverpool match)...then you can spend the savings on more gaming :)

Paul

... Or hire me and have a veritable disaster on your hands? Choice is yours ;)

I'd like to say my Wii collects dust but when there are addictive games like Strikers, Zelda, Metal Slug, Excite Truck and that little slew of numerous and brilliant VC games (and apparently Paper Mario and Prime 3 are quite good), then it just doesn't collect dust.

Have the people who say the Wii is for casual only actually played games beyond Wii Sports or the bargain bin games?
