while in the call

you get a screen of 6 different buttons including end call

i think its like keypad speaker phone and etc

one of them is contacts, you access it from there

Yup right under the speaker button there's a contacts button that takes you right to your contacts while on a call. Doesn't get any simpler.

LOL--yeah the stocks is really an odd one isn't it--not sure what Apple was thinking when they made that a "factory standard" I could do without either.

Probably so we could open it every so often and watch the value go up to remind us we should have bought some shares back in 1997 when it was $15.

I stand corrected then, I never noticed that. I guess I instinctively hit speaker phone then the home button to find info on my phone.

It's still really the only way to get to your contact list in one tap. Granted the previous suggestions/methods don't add THAT much time, but a good UI should take the user where they want to go as quickly as possible. Just my 2¢

Giving a user the option to hide/disable it? That's a whole other argument.

I have never opened it before--but I just did now and see Apple right at the top--lol--would be depressing for me to look at that every day.

I actually use it often and like that its readily available on the home screen. Just like any other phone really. There is usually a Contacts app and then another one when trying to make a call. They will def. not get rid of it. :p

I use contacts quite regularly, but I've created a sub group called Phone Contacts as a default that I use alongside Favourites.

i rarely use the app but i see no reason for Apple to scrap it, maybe folders will help those who find it useless.

Yes, I use it. In fact I use it the opposite way that you do.

I open up the Contacts list, find the contact, the click on their number to call them.
Sometimes I'll use spotlight as well.

For some reason this is the way I do it too....the only time I use the phone app is for checking VVM. I usually launch all calls from the contacts app

What a pointless thread....

There'a a contact app... Just like on any other phone.... there's a way of accessing the contacts while on a call...

Big deal...

The only thing I don't understand is the difference between the phone app contacts and the contacts app besides an extra tap. As far as I know they offer the exact same functionality, so why have two identical ways to do it?

I use this app all the time. Whenever I need to contact someone I don't call regularly I find them through this app. What's wrong with it?

Because tapping on the phone app (which is probably on almost everybody's first page) gets you to all your contacts. Why have an extra icon?

When I first got an iPhone, I found this app to be irritating and redundant, but after I had used the phone for a while, I began to start liking it and understanding why Apple made it a separate application. I often add new people to my contact list, and it seems very counterintuitive to need to open up the telephone application in order to add a new contact. It is also nice for sharing contacts via MMS, a feature I also use frequently.

Any reason you don't just use the phone app?

It's faster. Tap one thing and wait for it to load vs. tap one thing, wait for it to load, tap another thing, and wait a shorter time for it to load.

I am using an iPhone 3G, so things don't load lightning fast, especially on the 4.0 beta. That contributes to part of it. Plus, it's there so why not use it?
