I like iPad better than iSlate, but over all, I think they could have come up with something better. The "i" is done in my opinion.

I think a name with  might have been better, similar to the TV.

Ok so I haven't read this whole thread and maybe a bunch of other people called it too, but:
I called it the iPad back in August.

Anyway I'm sure I'm not the first, but just incase I am...
Do I win a cookie? :D

No cookie :)

The name iPad has been speculated as the name of an Apple PDA/Tablet dating back to 2002 or earlier.

In fact, the name iPad was first used (as far as I can tell) in a prank.
At this year's AET conference Apple Senior Technology VP Avadis Tevanian discussed and showed pictures of Apple's so far top-secret "iPad"

And it was passed around in several MacRumors posts back in 2002, here, here, here, here, or here.

WOW! 275 posts about a product's name!

I think many people have forgotten that this new product is to cost a lot less than people expect. How could that be done with a larger screen and all? And how would that impact the name of the product?

What if the current iPhone or iPod touch were to dock to this new product, providing the wifi or phone connection source to the world, and even some or all of the new device's computer power?

What if the new product is nothing more then an improved and enlarged input/output device for the current iProducts once the OS is bumped up to 4.0?

No need to get a separate phone contract. No need to chose between which one to buy. The iPhone or iPod touch can conserve it's battery by sucking off the larger one in the new product. Just imagine: a new product that drives sales for the current products while enhancing their versatility.

If this is the direction Apple is going, how would that affect what it would be named?

I only made it thru 5 of 8 pages...

"Apple MediaPad" would work - closer to the Newton, but "you guys" say Steve won't do that.

iPad - ye gads that would suck....

The Easel TM - that is obviously the dock/stand portion.... but it can't be Canvas because that is Trademarked from some software that I used back in the good ole days.... too bad it's Windows only now.

I still think, Apple Slate. But i see the British issue.....

I'm no trademark expert, but it seems to me that if Apple really went with this name, they would not trademark it only one week before the product's unveiling. I'm sure that they've prepared their Keynote, designed a webpage, etc. and settled on the name a long time ago. If the trademark wasn't successfully awarded to them, they'd have to start all over with this, right?

I agree - much better then any of these proposed ixxxx names.

I agree too - Apple Canvas is the best I've heard so far...
And with the splotched paint teaser they sent out, kinda fits.

:apple:Canvas

It sounds unlimited...a canvas to do what you want.

Slate, Tablet, Pad all speak to the form-factor of the device; not to what it is used for.

Regardless, the iPod touch is an iPod, not an iTouch. The only clueless people here are the ones who can't seem to notice the difference.

I do not call it that, but many many people do! To introduce a product called "iTouch" when tons of people already refer to the "iPod Touch" as that would be very dumb!

I think the device will join the MacBook line, not the iPod line. Hence the Slate/Tablet will be called the 'MacBook Slate' (It is supposed to have an E-reader function) and will join the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models in the portable line up.
I think it will start a new line, which will eventually replace the laptop line in the near future... :)

iTouch is the best name for this product, unfortunately it seems like that's what most people already call the iPod Touch. Which is annoying every time I hear or read it.

LISTEN...

Search here in this forum, you will laugh so loud once you read how mad we all were the day Apple announced the new name for the laptops, Macbook. ALL OF US hated it. today we love it. iPad we all hate it. tomorrow we are going to love it

I'm not much of a fan of the 'i' moniker, I think simply 'Apple Pad' would be a good choice.

Canvas, obviously.

The iPad name is only registered because Apple wants to prevent look-alike products in the marketplace, as many of you already noted. The name iPad probably served as a working name as the device was concieved. The similarity to iPod makes it an impossible name for the finished product, though.

Slate is a negative word in british english, and everything that starts with an "i" won't do - and "Mac" neither. This product will aim to fill a void between the i-line and the Mac-line. It'll be something entirely new.

Now the clues are all there: the invitation, the word "creation", the event taking place in a center of arts(!). Also, never forget that Steve considers himself an artist, as in "Great artists ship". Thus, the Apple Canvas.

Now if you don't agree with me, read my post again. :p

Thought long and hard...

OK, perhaps Mac Tablet or iTab are not the best names. But I still think that the i-series could retire. It is getting dated. With a new product genre, Apple's product range might get a breath of fresh air. Don't get me wrong, I like the slightly mature look of the aluminium, but something completely new-looking with a new type of name would be nice. I remember the feeling when I first saw the new Mouse. 'God' - I thought. 'Why haven't we thought of that before?' It is such a beautiful object. With a tablet, with Apple, having a good design will be paramount. A good name would just compliment the long-tested product.

Personally, I dream of colourful new products. It might not happen, (although, it would make the MacBooks and iPhones really cool), but with rumours, dreaming is free.

Also...

ANTI-GLARE!!!

I'm not much of a fan of the 'i' moniker, I think simply 'Apple Pad' would be a good choice.

ApplePad has a nice ring to it, although the iPad rolls off the tongue much easier than iSlate does.

And then that got me thinking. Chances of this a probably tiny, what with the name being used for a completely different product before, but given the rumours that the tablet could be used for newspapers, magazines, books etc…what about iBook?

I still think iTab sounds the best. There isn't any conflict with that name there. (iSlate is slang in the UK for criticizing and also just sounds horrible, and iPad obviously sounds like a feminine hygiene product).
