Will Apple's Tablet Actually Be Called the iPad? New Trademarks Filed This Week

I do like the name Canvas, although I think there was a software product with that name a while back. And since I think Apple will be positioning this device as a revolution in personal computing, it makes sense to leave behind the old "i" nomenclature.

I think iPad or iTablet is far, far more likely than iSlate.

iSlate is just a dumb name (at least in the US), and I think Apple would pull a major PR media coup to differentiate themselves if they go to something like iPad after everyone else at CES was talking up "slates".

iSlate also sounds too much like "isolate", when the purpose of the device is to make you more connected with your world.

I didn't pour over all the posts to see if someone else thought of this, but it is possible that apple is snatching up these names just so someone else doesn't use them? Similar to how gooogle.com, gogle.com, and googel.com all point to google.com?

I'm inclined to think it will be neither iPad nor iSlate.

I'm in the camp that thinks the iPad is confusingly similar to iPod.

And given the buzz about this as a category-killing ebook or magazine reader, moniker seems to fit particularly well.

I think iPad is already taken by several companies.

So was iPhone. Apple forked over some cash and just bought it. They have tens of billions of dollars in the bank, you think they can't just do that again?

If it really isn't iPad then Apple is out there squatting on the name. They are just doing what other folks have done (squat on names and perhaps get paid off if you don't use them by someone who does. ).

If the device can be used like a "pad" as in pad and pencil/pen .... the tampon stuff won't stick. Except in jr. high humor circles.

iPad is better than iPod Table or iPod Slate . For those bemoaning the lack of differentiation ... are they going to be that different? Besides much larger screen and price. Do folks confuse MacBook with MacBook Pro ?

P.S. No one has mentioned reviving iBook . ;-)

P.P.S. Isaac ( would be a nice tip of the hat to the Newton. But doubt any
pre-second coming references would be attempted. )

iMac Air

If it were running Mac OS X and was basically a portable, touchscreen iMac, then iMac Air would kinda sound cool. Although this is not what I think it will be. Hopefully it's a new operating system.

To me, iSlate sounds too much like isolate. iPad is too strange. Were there rumors about the name of the ipod before it came out? Or were we just blindsided?

Im going for the white i think.

I think Apple leaked the name iSlate as a form of disinformation to trick their competitors into believing this would be the name of their device.

At CES every computer company showed off their new tablet devices
but called them “Slate PCs”. Of course they did this because they too believe Apple’s tablet will be named the iSlate and they hope to confuse consumers.
I think this was an intended move by Appl. In effect Apple grouped all their competitors by tricking them into calling their devices “Slate PCs”.

I have no idea what Apples’s new device will be called but I highly doubt it will be iSlate.
