I think they'd be silly to do so. The reason they removed it was to make the iPhone water resistant and to allow more room for internal parts. By comparison, the iPad has so much more space for that component. I suppose making a tablet water resistant would be a very good reason to get rid of it, but probably the only reason.

but they HAVE to do it to stay more on the 'we did it because its old, and there is a better way'. If not, they its just 'well we couldnt fit it in' which looks kinda like a failure. They have to push wireless audio to stay on the side of innovation and that means no headphone port on ipads, damn the space requirements.

Then the only "holes" left will be the speaker grills, and they will really have to be "courageous."
Haha

Yeah, there's no way the iPad is going to keep the headphone jack. I'm surprised Apple didn't remove it from the iPad before the iPhone. The iPad doesn't even come with headphones in the box. I bet it's not used nearly as much as it is on the iPhone.

The lack of headphone jack makes me remember when Apple introduced lightining cable on IPhone 5, one month later when they introduced IPad 4 , the lightning cable was included too. And all IPhones and IPads after fall 2012 included the new lightning cable. Based on this fact, Apple will remove the headphone jack on future iPhone and IPad models . So here is the question - what Apple will remove or add in the next models??

I fail to see the corelation between upgrading their port and removing a port.

This concerns me more on the iPad than the iPhone. I frequently have an iPad plugged into speakers while charging and I see a quality accommodating stereo or set of speakers as way more expensive than headphones.

Maybe an alternative could be some kind of Bluetooth dongle that could be plugged into my existing systems.

Hubris. In the past elimination of old tech like the CD-ROM drives on MacBooks resulted in a lighter and more portable device, floppy drives needed to die. But the 3.5mm headphone jack? The amount of space recovered is minimal but the ability to charge and listen simultainously is taken away and another dongle to lose.

My current iPhone 6s looks like it will be my last iPhone. The lack of innovation coupled with stupid design decisions is pushing Apple back to repeating the Sculley years. If they make the same stupid decisions with the iPad I'll move on there as well.

"Lack of innovation" - what, because it didn't look different? What they did with the duel camera is pretty freakin cool. Also, you may not like the AirPods, but that auto-pairing across devices is pretty sweet.

Was it a huge release? If you're into photography on the iPhone, then HECK YEAH! If not, then it probably was minor.

Regarding the removal of the headphone jack - if it means that much to you, then by all means please move to a different product. I might have been more upset if this was back when the cheapest Bluetooth headphones were $250, but now... I seriously cannot see why this is any kind of big deal. At BEST this is a minor inconvienance (they include an adaptor with the phone, along with lightning headphones). There are actually a myriad of options available to work around it if you still want that 3.5mm Jack.

Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if the next MacBook didn't come with one either.

The iPad is more of a cross platform device. So not as likely until they run out of room.

And they definitely should not until they figure out how two users can share an audio program together from the same device.

Weird, because I feel the iPhone needs the port way more than the iPad. I don't often plug headphones into my iPad, but I use them in my iPhone all the time. Luckily I already have Bluetooth headphones, so it won't really be an issue when I finally do buy a device without a headphone jack.

I use headphones pretty regularly with both devices. However, I almost never find myself needing headphones while charging my phone, while I do so often on my iPad. Probably because I watch more video (YouTube and Netflix) on my iPad, which obviously drains the battery faster than music.

I've almost never needed to charge my iPad more than once a day, and I don't listen to music while I sleep, so it's not an issue for me on my iPad.

But I wasn't necessarily talking about charging while listening to music. It just seems so much more awkward to have a wire tethering you to a tablet than to a phone.

There is no version of the future where Apple "backtrack" as you put it, nor should they.
Hang on a minute. Apple did backtrack on the 4th gen shuffle. If you remember, they removed the control buttons from the 3rd gen, customers spoke and the buttons were re-instated for the 4th gen to much applause.

Here, the applause is around the 1 minute mark:

So perhaps if customers reject the iPhone 7 in favor of a new iPhone 6s (which you can still get with a respectable 128gb of storage) Apple might get the message? They did before.

I don't usually need to charge my iPad more than onece every couple of days either, but when I'm on the couch bingeing on some YouTube or Netflix I just don't like the feeling that my battery is draining, so I usually plug it in since I'm not going anywhere anyway.

With my phone, I'm far more likely to be moving while I listen to music, so charging while listening only happens in my car, where I listen via Bluetooth connection to my speakers anyway. I don't own, nor do I want, Bluetooth headphones/earbuds.

I can totally relate to this. When I get home from work and my phone is at 80%, the very first thing I do is let my dogs out of their cage because I'm not a selfish monster and then I plug my iPhone in to top it off. Not having 100% battery makes me anxious and I don't know why. I didn't used to be like this. :/

Same with my iPads. When I'm not using them, I'm charging them. Even if they're at 98%.

This x1000. This is where it starts.
Oct will have iPads and MacBooks all without wires (except power) and then next year the 8 will have wireless charging.
Boom. Done with 'plugs'

I can relate - but it gets REALLY bad if you get a Smart car!

I really hope they do..
it will be so annoying and so inconvenient if they eliminate them and use the lightning port nonsense.
I have no interest in Bluetooth headphones and just don't feel they are safe.and the adapter is just pain in the backside.

I get having no interest in Bluetooth headphones as a personal preference, but why would you think they're not safe?

you can google safety of bluetooth headphones,it's controversial subjects with conflicting research results and opinions but in short Bluetooth headsets emit wireless microwave radiation which is considered a carcinogen.
I tend to avoid anything that us assiciated with such risks as much as possible.

Bluetooth is totally safe. Don't worry.

says who?
there are scientist, physicians, researches who don't agree, they have concerns about having bluetooth headset attached to your head and about effects of it's microwave radiations so close to brain..
so I wouldn't say its totally safe with certainty.

Me for one. I've been using Bluetooth headsets and headphones for over 10 years.

The FDA and the FCC for another (including for medical devices). You're more than welcome to be cautious, but the major players have certified Bluetooth safe.
