Can't you just navigate to the desktop that has the windows you want to look at, then double tap with two fingers on the dock icon related to those windows to display them all with App Expose. Like below. OK, so it's on a per application basis rather than all windows, but you know what application you are looking for and you don't even have to know what desktop it's on.

... That's way more complicated than quick switching in Exposé.

So to confirm...

- Show-desktop expose - ?? can someone confirm if this still exists?

Expose has been around since 2003 - in 8 years it's become a huge part of my workflow - I will not update to Lion until it functions as it traditionally has.

You can set a hot corner to expose desktop, although I have no idea yet what the point of exposing an empty desktop is.

The thumbnails of your spaces and full screen pages, the ones that line up across the top of Mission Control, get too small when you have several thumbnails. Moving the cursor over the thumbnail does magnify it, but not enough to actually let me see what I have open in the thumbnail/space. It would be great if apple allowed you to adjust the magnification just like you can for things on your dock. MC, as currently configured, is no substitute for all windows expose.
