I can completely echo your concerns and I've made a little pictorial representation of what I can't do in Lion vs Snow Leopard (I'm now back in Snow Leopard). If someone can show me doing the same thing in Lion I'll consider going back, but until then.

OK here we have a pretty regular scenario for me - Internet open in my central Space, iTunes in the left, iPhoto in the right and my workspace in the top Space:

Image

In the top Space I'm working on a Word document. Now, the problem is, I'm also working on a Powerpoint Presentation, using Finder and also using a bunch of journal articles in PDF format:

Image

But that's not a problem with Exposé - I can quickly find navigate to what I want in two gestures (four finger swipe, click):

Image

If you can show me that on Lion I'll admit I'm wrong, and it's the greatest system ever - until you can show me how to do that without affecting my productivity, I'm not interested.

Lion can't even handle 6 safari windows and this is with Mission Control's version of App. Expose.

RVM84,
- off topic, but have you discovered Papers?
http://www.mekentosj.com/
It will make organizing, searching and reading your journal articles a lot easier.
Also, bookends is pretty good for Bibilographies and Datagraph is great for 2D graphs.

Wow - those look great, thanks a lot for the heads up! I've been trying to find good reference management software for a while - EndNote isn't much use for the Social Sciences and feels a bit too clunky to me. Papers looks really good, as does Bookends. My future MA degree thanks you :D

That's not app Exposé in your attached file. App Exposé is a three finger swipe down.

So to confirm...

- App-windows expose (show all windows from the active app) - still exists in Lion
- All-windows expose (show all windows from all open apps) - does not exist in Lion, replaced by MC
- Show-desktop expose - ?? can someone confirm if this still exists?
- Traditional spaces grid layout - does not exist in Lion, replaced by MC

Expose has been around since 2003 - in 8 years it's become a huge part of my workflow - I will not update to Lion until it functions as it traditionally has.

Yes it does.

If you haven't done so already, I suggest that you provide Apple with feedback if you feel that way. Your only hope of Apple bringing back All Window expose is if enough people do the same.

That is App Expose within Mission Control.

App Expose from the desktop shows the entirety of all the App windows in a grid layout.

App Expose from Mission Control just slightly shifts the Windows. They still cover each other and sometimes completely hide each other. This is a huge problem if you want to move a window from one space to another.

For example, say you have 4-5 finder windows open to various locations and you want to move the folder with you pictures to a space with Adobe Photoshop - you will not be able to find the finder window to move. It is a pain and poorly thought out. Maybe if you only use your computer for a few e-mails and web browsing it doesn't matter, but 10.4 through 10.6 made complicated things easy. Mission Control makes complicated things needlessly complicated.

Don't forget to set up the library proxy for Papers. That way you can not only search for papers, but also download the .pdf directly.

Papers2 added a lot of functionality in terms of autofilling the article information, like vol. issue, etc. But they re-wrote the whole program from the ground up for Papers2 some features are still being re-implemented, like search tokens. It would be worthwhile to ask for a Papers1 license until they fix the search tokens, otherwise searching doesn't narrow down things very well.

Right now I have 8 Desktops. Why 8? Because it's the only way to be able to SEE my Safari windows in each one when I spread them out because this only shows a few windows and they're STILL overlapped/messy.

When I do "app expose" (which I set to a hot corner) - I see ALL my Safari windows in a grid. The problem is....

1. They are teensy windows that I can barely make out and I have a 27" iMac
2. It shows ALL my windows and I have no idea which Desktop (Space) they are in. Doesn't matter - they can't be moved from there anyway.

I wonder why they didn't create a nice simple grid view available for each Desktop vs showing a grid for ALL desktop windows in total.

Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Mission Control. Check the bottom boxes labeled "Switch to Desktop 1/2/3/etc". Then just click and hold on the window you want to move and press the shortcut for the corresponding desktop you want to move it to. Much simpler :)

Edit: I do agree with you about Mission Control. I much prefer Exposé + Spaces over Mission Control. There are a couple walk arounds albeit they do not completely fill the void.

Preferences from Spaces linger in Mission Control

In SL Spaces, I had Outlook and iTunes set to be visible in all spaces. After upgrading to Lion, I can't assign either of these two apps to a single desktop. Does anyone have any suggestions for clearing the Mission Control/Spaces preference settings?

Expose summary - not exactly

Does not have to be an active app. Two finger double-tap the app icon in the doc and all windows from that app pop up. If you hit escape, you go back to what you were working on.

What's hilarious is that when you scroll between fullscreen apps and spaces normally you push left to go to the app or space on the left, but when you go into mission control it works the opposite. Who the heck designed this crap? It's like people designing one part didn't talk to people designing another. And don't get me started on the stupidity behind 2 finger page swapping not working in iTunes etc but 3 fingers do. Talk about a rush job.

it's actually thought through u just dont get it man. u now swipe in the direction of the next app (or page on safari) which is way more natural and makes more sense. also how do u expect 3 fingers swapping to work on itunes and safari if its already taken by switching between spaces. wouldnt make any sense so 2 fingers is for ur apps and 3 fingers for ur spaces. NOT HARD

Right click on the app icon in the dock and go to options, then under Assign To click either All Desktops or This Desktop, depending on what you want.

Did you even read what was written? The way it scrolls in MC is different than how it scrolls outside of it. How do I expect 3 finger scrolling to work? BECAUSE IT DOES WORK. Use the OS before you start criticizing other people. If you set page swipes to 3 fingers it makes space swaps become 4 finger swipes, and then all of the gesture swipes work again in iTunes, Chrome, Finder etc. It's idiotic that Apple released their software and only one of their programs was coded to work with two finger-swipes.

Can't you just navigate to the desktop that has the windows you want to look at, then double tap with two fingers on the dock icon related to those windows to display them all with App Expose. Like below. OK, so it's on a per application basis rather than all windows, but you know what application you are looking for and you don't even have to know what desktop it's on.

Does that work with magic mouse? It still doesn't solve the problem of being able to conveniently move windows to different spaces but at least you can find the windows you are looking for.

Yes. I have a magic mouse. Still to get the trackpad.

Has anyone tried grabbing the Spaces.app and Exposé.app from Utilities in SL and throwing them in a Lion install? That might be over-simplifying the issue here, but perhaps it is just that simple?

I haven't upgraded to Lion yet on any of my machines, so I can't test that out.

think thats too simple a fix

I just tried it anyway, nothing happens when I launch spaces.app

I really hope some hacker comes up with a way to bring back Spaces + Exposé the way they were in SL (or even in Leopard, that was by far the best).

Until then, **** Mission Control!
