iPod touch 5G had 16GB as base model, I believe that should be improved upon if they want to revitalize sales (the main question of this thread).

Of course it all may also depend on how good they will market it, will there be tv ads etc.
I'm doubtful that they will air TV ads. I remember there was only one commercial for the iPod touch 5th generation and the other iPods.

I wish that they would make a commercial that shows how the iPod touch can be used (for example, gaming, pictures, etc.). That would at least let people know that there is a new generation out there.

Good question. With this performance bump, putting it on par with Iphone6 it should. They just need to get the word out.

I think there are some that aren't anxious for people to find out that the ipod Touch makes such a great wifi phone. With wifi at work, home, school, I don't need a phone when I can call on the touch...there goes the contracts and the big profits...

Yep, it will sell very well. This will most likely be the last update though.

You're still going to claim this is the last update, when everyone believed they were going to kill off the entire iPod lineup, and then if it got updated it would only be with the A7 processor. And Apple has gone way beyond that.
You will still claim they will never update it again, interesting opinion.
I did read the reason the iPods haven't been updated for so long was the acquisition of Beats and its music service launch, that would have been planned for ages and it makes sense to update the iPods after.
So we will see if they will update the Touch again.

As for sales, I think it will attract new sales as it will have NEW stuck all over it everywhere, people like new products :)

Well I'm all Android - Nexus 9, Xperia Z3 Compact, Meizu M1 Note, but I'm buying one because I think it has great specs for the price..plus it'll be good to try out the latest iOs with decent hardware.

The A8 is 64 bit and will run IOS updates for a long time. IOS 9 should be last update the A5 will support so Apple had to either update or kill the Touch. If you look back through my post, I have always thought the Touch 5 would be upgraded (I thought it would be this September). There may be another update to the Touch but, I think it will be be another 3 years or never.

I believe that we'll see a redesigned 7th generation in two years, or somewhat after the iPhone 7 is released. It just makes too much sense to keep recycling components from previous iPhones in order to keep the iPod touch around.

Although it might sound like a good idea, I think the reason for it is that the iPads still have important differences from the iPhone and iPod touch. For example, multi-touch gestures, the 4:3 aspect ratio, etc.

Obviously there are "differences" between the Touch and the iPads, all I'm saying is that I'm surprised they haven't streamlined the Touch into the iPad lineup since the Touch is more similar to a Wifi-only iPad than it is similar to the other non-IOS iPods or even the iPhone 6/6+.

I'm in a similar situation, MotoX (2014) and a Nexus7. Having picked up a 32GB Touch yesterday at the local AppleStore to use primarily as a dedicated audio device, what didn't strike me until last night is how much utility the new updated camera adds to the Touch. The one thing that I've never been happy with on any of my Android phones is the camera and I think the Touch is going to be a suitable alternative to buying a new pocket camera.

I think the iPod touch will get a bump in sales for awhile, but it isn't enough. Apple needs to make the iPod special again, create incentive to buy that and still have an iPhone/iPad/MacBook. I don't know how they could do it, but it's what iPod needs.

Also, they didn't advertise the new iPod hardly at all, just randomly slipped this upgrade through the door for seemingly little reason. If they would have released it in some kind of event, but one that wouldn't cause the iPod to be forgotten about in the rush (I.e iPhone 5 and iPod 5 pretty much releasing together) but also making it in time before the holidays, that would be ideal.

I agree. I went into an Apple Store here in NYC during peak hours last night, and nobody was at the iPod table checking out the new iPod touches. NOBODY. But that was cool. I had the whole display for myself. Heh heh heh. How often does THAT happen for a new product at an Apple Store? Lol.

In a way, I found it kinda sad, and perhaps a bad sign for future iPod touch updates. Maybe you're right, Apple will have to do something drastic with the next update or this might just be the last.

But I couldn't be more thrilled with this update. I nabbed my 128gb model in Gold last night. Love it. It's my go to portable camera I'll use for my travel blog. :)

Bingo. This is the reason I nabbed the iPT6 last night. To use as a pocket camera. I'm a travel photog, and it's the perfect little device to use as a travel camera. I hope Apple sees the potential of the iPT as a pocket camera and keeps giving it better & better cameras in the future.

Do you guys feel optimistic that the iPod touch 6th generation will sell in better numbers than the 5th generation,... and how there is a price-point and storage capacity for everyone?
It will sell better than any other iPod. I think the sales of the iPT are constrained by price and iPhone users.

An iPhone user won't buy an iPT. However, the iPT is a great camera; it has excellent uses for non-iPhone owners.

The 6th Gen iPT will definitely be here for 3+ years before the next update. There might be tiny updates to the iPT in the next few years, but mostly cosmetic.

The price point is ridiculous. It should be $149 for the lowest end model. They should call it iPAD Touch and move it into the iPad line, since it is a tiny iPad in most all ways.

Honestly, everything is appealing except the lame 4" screen! That's the only reason I'm skipping this! That's so last generation iPhone.

I agree, it is shockingly small looking when compared to the larger phablets we've all become accustomed to now. I would love to see a future 4.7" or 5.5" iPod touch. I use my iPod touch for travel & street photography, and the larger screen would be nice when composing or editing shots & video. Having said that, there is something very cool about the current 4" screen size too. It's very stealthy. Which is great for street photography. I can palm it in one hand and hit the shutter with my thumb very easily. Nobody can even tell I'm taking pictures. A larger 5.5" device would be much harder if not impossible to conceal or shoot with one hand.

So there are pluses for the 4" iPT...at least for me who uses it for photography. Speaking of which, I am thrilled with the camera update. My hope is that if Apple keeps updating the touch, that they put a priority on future camera tech. Making it better & better. The iPT is really the perfect pocket camera.

I agree. I wish it were cheaper too. I sprung for the 128gb version which set me back $399! But it's my only camera for my travel blog, so it's worth it. I was going to get the 64gb version, but The iOS already takes up 14gb, and I take tons of pics & video, so feel the extra space of 128gb is warranted. It may be overkill for some, but I will definitely use it.

Yes, I believe it will. There has been pent-up demand for an update to the Touch. The performance of this new device is turning heads. Having the latest processor means that it will have a long effective lifespan.

I have a 64GB iPod Touch 4G so to upgrade to the 6G is to get the far better device for $100 less. I know that I won't be alone.

One question that I have is with regard to the camera... the iPod Touch 4G camera is the "quickest" (from unlock to snapping a picture) of any device I've owned. Far quicker than my iPhone 4's (that I use as iPods) and my daughter's 4S and my wife's 5c.

I paid $399 for a 64GB iPod Touch 4G. I think $399 for the 128GB is not bad considering Apple's pricing structure. I'd prefer $50 increments for storage upgrades, but that won't happen.

As for the 4" screen. I'm glad that they kept it at 4". I need something portable... more portable than the iPhone 6 phablet.

Yep, I've already read about many upgrading from the 4th gen to the 6th gen (talk about an upgrade!) And that's an interesting observation about the 4th gen's camera launch and speed. I would bet it's because the camera is only 0.7MP, so it doesn't require as much power.

Wait till the holidays, I bet they will sell pretty good.

In the shorter term folks will still have their minds on the upcoming new iPhones and iPads.

I'm definitely happy with my purchase. No buyers remorse. I needed & wanted a new portable travel camera, and the new iPod touch 6 fits the bill. I think I paid $399 for my ipt5, so I got more for my $ this time. I guess I would have preferred $50 increments too. But who wouldn't? :)

I also like the 4" size for ultimate portability. I was just talking future iPod touch updates, and wondering what apple could do. Offering a slightly larger size option like they do with the iPhone is one possibility. I think it would boost sales to offer it in two sizes down the road. But mostly, I just want apple to keep putting the best camera in future models, cause that's what I use my iPod touch for mostly. Photography.

Offering a larger size somewhat cannibalizes iPhone sales though, I know not a whole lot cause it ain't a phone but those definitely wanting a bigger screen will have to wait or get an iPhone.

This thing is great for the gym, so small and light. I know there are other small light options from Apple for music but not with these specs and for Apple Music. :)

This 6th gen update was enough to get me to buy an iPod touch for the very first time ever. I had never owned any of the prior generations. My reason was that I anticipate getting an iPhone 6s Plus this fall. With its huge 5.5" screen and form factor, the iPod touch now has a lot of appeal for those times (such as for fitness use) when I need something that's much smaller, lighter and more portable than the 5.5" iPhone. In the past I've used the iPod shuffle or nano, but now that they are getting extremely long in the tooth and do not support Apple Music, etc., the iPod touch now fills that void for me.

The new update will push higher sales for sure, but it still won't save the iPod.

The iPhone is what's killing the iPod in the first place, and an iPod Touch will never be able to replace an iPhone.

Even as a separate device to have tons of storage it makes no sense if you need the storage. $200-$400 is better spent on a getting a high capacity iPhone in the first place.

It still has a market obviously, but no amount of upgrades is going to save it.

I don't buy the canabalizing theory. If that were true, Apple wouldn't offer the iPad mini for fear it would canabalize iPhone 6 plus sales....which it clearly hasn't. I think that people that want an iPhone will always buy an iPhone. But I would argue that many people who don't want an iPhone or even some that already own an iPhone would buy a 4.7" or 5.5" iPod touch in droves. I truly believe it would re energize iPod touch sales in a big way. Even more than this kickass update will. But of course, that's just my theory. Personally, I think it would. They could call it an iPad nano and still sell the 4" iPod touch. Even if they gave a 5.5" iPad nano cellular, data like other ipads, I still don't think it'd canabalize iPhone sales.

Having said all that, I love my new iPT6. :)

This is good reasoning. And I think many people feel as you do. For this reason alone, I think the iPod touch is not dead.

I disagree. Not everyone wants or needs an iPhone. The iPod touch fills that gap. I txt, make an recieve calls on mine all the time over wifi. I know many people who have a large iPhone 6 that get an iPod touch for portability. And of course the iPod touch will always be the best gateway drug for kids & teens who can't afford an expensive iPhone contract. i think the iPod touch is here to stay. I guess we'll find out eventually which of us is right. Of course I'm biased. I love my iPT. :)
