Only 4"... STILL? Apple, wake up call - it's 2015.

They're taking the pi**
If you want an iOS device (with the latest processor) with a larger screen, you have options... specifically the iPhone 6 and 6+. But for those of us who want a smaller screen, the iPod Touch is the only option.

You're merely stating facts as the land lies, not saying why.

No. They're not. You're just expecting too much from a device that costs $199.

Ah, really? So why has my Lumia 640XL also got a phone inside, a 13MP Zeiss camera AND a 5.7" IPS CB LCD... for £175?

I'm looking forward to your replies.

You're comparing :apple:s and oranges. You can't compare a small screened ultra-portable wifi-based handset with iOS and a high-end processor with a phablet with Windows phone and a low-end processor. Oh, and nice try measuring it in pounds. If you want it that way, the iPod Touch is £159.

I can, and I did. Next...

I thought that the "why" was pretty obvious. Apple has no incentive to make the iPod Touch parallel the iPhone 6 and 6+. I know that some here want the iPhone 6 specs and capabilities but at the iPod Touch prices. Complaining that the iPod Touch is not like the iPhone 6 is silly.

They are different products that serve different purposes. Apple offers a spectrum of iOS devices that range in screen size from 4" up to 9.7". They range in function from a portable media player, smartphone, to tablet.

And yet the 2012 5th gen had the same screen size/res as the iPhone 5... so no, it's not at all silly; what is silly is to retain specs from 3+ years ago. It's greedy and pathetic, to be honest.

[edit]: Where's touchID? LOL...

next...

I think maybe Apple is targeting the price first, and then decide the spec after that. I'm sure(-ish) that they've tried different combination of specs to improve.

And after adding the combination of A8+M8 chip and the 8MP Camera they reach the spec they think customers would like best at their target profit margin.

Of course this is just a(n educated) guess.

I think one of the reasons why Apple did not include a 4.7" screen in the iPod touch is because it would have required them to produce new casings for the device. The 6th generation will allow them to test the market and see what the demand is, and then they will decide whether or not it's strong enough to warrant a redesign for a 7th generation. And while a 4.7" model would have (more than likely) sold more than the 4" model, the iPods right now make up less than 1% of their revenue, so it's not a surprise that they are not putting their cutting-edge features in it.

The lack of Touch-ID, however, to me signals a future redesign. Summer 2017, almost a year after the iPhone 7 is released, is my guess for the 7th generation's release date.

I've never heard so much blinkered apologist bollocks in my life. If you don't care much about a product, don't release a NEW version which raises expectations, and then crashes people back down to earth again. No wonder there was no loud fanfare announcement - they'd be too ashamed to announce this with heads held high.

LOL. A8? More RAM? So what? This iPod is a blatant wringing dry of Apple's customers, and this trend seems to be creeping in slowly across the company.

Pathetic.

No need for such negative comments. If you're not interested in this new iPod touch, then that's perfectly fine. Plenty of people are and I've heard many of them are happy with their purchase. The $199 price point is important, as Apple has previously stated in one of their keynotes. For the moment, they couldn't have reached that price point with a 4.7" screen or Touch-ID.

Yes, I agree that many times Apple holds back on features on purpose so that they can include them in the next versions of their devices. But nobody can deny that it makes sense in terms of their product strategy and business.

Realism != negativity.

No calling people apologist for trying to reason with you why Apple didn't increase the size of the screen is negative. However, you clearly only see things from your own perspective and the heck with trying to reason out anything. Apple is wrong and you are right! RIGHT! LOL Also much of what you are saying is about your own expectations, nothing Apple ever said even indicated there would be a new model period. Clearly some will sit this one out, but just remember it will be those of us that bought this model that will pave the way for any future development and possibly a larger screen.

You are free to believe what you want to believe. I have no desire to persuade you to change your mind. Some of us did offer up potential reasons for Apple's decision. It's not necessarily that we AGREE with those potential reasons. None of us really know.

I find it quite amusing that you would consider me an "Apple apologist"... especially when the majority here would consider me an "anti-Apple bigot". Goes to show... "If I disagree with an anti-Apple bigot then I'm an Apple apologist. If I disagree with an Apple apologist then I'm an anti-Apple bigot". o_O:eek::D

while the ipod classic and its click wheel is and always will be the most fantastic ipod to me, there is absolutely no denying that the 5/6G touch is an absolutely stunningly beautiful piece of art. I used my 5G as a travel camera in Mexico last fall and the form factor was amazing to have in my hand and more so in my pocket after having an iPhone 6 for a couple months at that point.

hopefully i can pick my new 6G up today after work.

Do you guys feel optimistic that the iPod touch 6th generation will sell in better numbers than the 5th generation, seeing as how it is the closest it's been to the current iPhone since the 3rd generation (in terms of A-chips and RAM) and how there is a price-point and storage capacity for everyone?

Well, for me at least, Apple made a sale that it otherwise wouldn't have. My aging iPhone 5c 32GB with prepaid cellular service serves as my daily driver for just about everything; photography, video camera, music, podcasts, couch surfing, shopping, book reading, and TV (I don't own a TV or iPad). I'm finding that some of the apps I use are beginning to stutter, from presumably the increased system resources necessary to run them. Since I am strictly no-contract, the 6th gen iPod Touch offers an affordable alternative in a similar form factor to take the load off my aging iPhone, while enjoying significantly improved performance for the above activities around the house. A refurbished iPad Air 2 would be a consideration with it's larger form factor, but it's not pocketable and out of my price range for the capacity I want (64GB). In contrast, the 6th gen iPod Touch offers more value for the dollar for me with 64-bit future proofing, A8 and M8 (I can do without touch ID and GPS). Given I'm not a heavy phone user with about 90% of my phone calls are over Facetime audio while at home, I probably won't need to replace the 5c when it dies or becomes obsolete. I could just as easily use a flip phone and/or a pre-paid data modem to feed Talkatone, Google Voice and other apps while out and about; the hardware would be small enough to easily fit in a small pouch. I realize I'm not Apple's target audience for the 6th gen iPod Touch, but nevertheless, there is a good use-case for this product for those of us who want to upgrade to 64-bit iOS with A8/M8, albeit affordably without a contract.

The Lumia, like all WP is a piece of low-end crap.
I disagree. For example, the Lumia 640 at $100 is a fantastic deal, as it has a 5" 720p screen and an 8MP camera that takes pretty good shots. It's hard to find an Android phone with those specs at that price. For people that have no need for apps other than Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, etc., it's a great phone.

If you're comparing it to the new iPod touch, of course there's no comparison, apart from the screen size. But it could work for some people as an iPod if they really wanted to.

And on that note, you've just lost any credibility your comment may have amassed, demonstrating the complete antithesis of carefully considered, intelligent insightful observation.

The ipod touch 6th gen got very nice upgrades, minus the exterior (it still looks great) and it costs the same as the previous generation that it absolutely destroys. What's the problem?
