  • HD4600 is 30-40% faster than the 4000.
  • Apple is such a large company that I am sure Intel could give them a chip a few weeks to a couple of months ahead of time. Iris Pro is shipping in Q3, which could be July, so getting a CPU a month ahead of time isn't impossible.
  • Custom clocked and GPU'd CPU?

I thought the Iris 5200 was 30-40% faster than the 4000.

They are the same with regard to the graphics subsystem; they have slightly different implementations of PLL and on-die power optimizer, with a different state machine for ACPI sleep states, and tweaks in the FIVR. Given the identical clocks in the graphics parts with the same EUs and same mem subsystem; the performance should be identical.
What about vRAM? How much was in the Anandtech trial? Apple has used 768 MB for the 13" rMBP. What are your thoughts on the 47W quad with IP?

Iris is 5100, Iris Pro is 5200. Intel claims 5200 is 100% faster than the 4000. Real world benchmarks to come.

The non-eDRAM variants of haswell only have the standard dual channel set-up; so there shouldn't be much difference. Assuming that they used the same DIMMs in the test setup for both the IVB and Haswell machines, it should have the same effect on the mobile offerings as well.

The issue is that; if the rMBP is released tomorrow, there probably won't much much of a graphics upgrade over the current one; at least for the 13" type.

They basically have three choices:
  • use the available 28 W SKUs (or possibly the quad 37W 4702MQ), which would be the logical choice for the 13" pro. But this would leave them with HD 4600 graphics, which is only a small upgrade over current offerings.
  • use the available ULV offerings, and get that 40 EU part for graphics (HD 5000 series) without the eDRAM; but the CPU performance would be drastically curtailed compared even to the curr generation.
  • Wait for the 28/37W SKUs that have mainstream M series performance (base clock 2.2GHz +), and also have some form of GT3/GT3e graphics (Iris, Iris pro) that would be a big leap from curr gen graphics. But this won't be released until late october timeframe (give or take a few weeks).

The 15" really doesn't really matter that much in terms of what iGPU is on-die with intel SKU, since it likely had a discrete solution built-in anyway. Unless they are thinking about offering a 15" with integrated graphics again, like they did 3-4 years ago.

That makes a lot of sense.

These graphics show a performance difference between the HD4000 and the HD4600 which is much higher than 10-15%. It's more towards 20-40%.

Not sure what you are reading;

Only one bench (tomb raider @ 1366x768) shows above 25%.

Not sure what you are reading;

Only one bench (tomb raider @ 1366x768) shows above 25%.

Let's see:

Metro (1366x768):

HD4000: 20
HD4600: 26

HD4600 is 30% above HD4000

Metro (1600x900):

HD4000: 8.5
HD4600: 11

HD4600 is 29% above HD4000

BioShock (1366x768)

HD4000: 21.7
HD4600: 27

HD4600 is 24.4% above HD4000

BioShock (1600x900):

HD4000: 12.2
HD4600: 15.1

HD4600 is 23.7% above HD4000

And so on. On Tomb Raider, HD4600 is 47.3% faster than HD4000 using a 1366x768 resolution, and 26.5% faster when using a 1600x900 resolution.

Late October? Where did you get this information from?

If that is true, then I hate Intel. Intel was supposed to have released Haswell in January, and it delayed the release on purpose in a failed attempt to boost Ivy Bridge sales.

Less than 30% of the voters seem to think that the rMBPs will not get any update. Do you really expect that or do you just wish the rMBPs to be refreshed?

The rumor seems to be that they'll be announced at WWDC but not *released* then. Your poll asked about the release.

In fact, it is not a rumor. There was a report from Kuo of KGI Securities saying that the rMBP might have its availability delayed due to production issues. However, Kuo has taken it back and said he expects the rMBP to be released at WWDC. 9to5Mac received SKUs from a possible MBA, but no signs of a rMBP. It would make no sense for Apple to release a refreshed rMBP without making it available the next day. Apple did it with the iMac, but that was a redesign with brand new components. That's not the case of the rMBP, which will get a new processor and little more than that. The delay in the iMac harmed sales, and I don't think Apple will do that again. Said that, I'm not convinced that Apple will release the rMBP at WWDC. All signs point to the release of a MBA, but not of a rMBP.

Here's to hoping it turns out that Kuo is right :)

I am still not convinced that you're right. Just because 9to5mac recieved some SKUs and not others doesn't mean there aren't others. And don't forget that Kuo has been right in the past and he is expecting an update. rMBPs are Apple's flagship line, and WWDC is their flagship conference. It would make little sense for them not to update it, even if it has to ship in 2-4 weeks. They want to get the word out, and a private conference in October doesn't scream publicity.

Apple events automatically get publicity. How about releasing new rMBP with the final release of 10.9 and for the holidays? They did that with the 13" rMBP and iPad mini.

Me too.

Let me put this way: I hope I'm wrong and you're right. I would love to see a new Haswell rMBP at WWDC next week. I'm too pessimistic and I shouldn't be, but at least I won't get so disappointed if Apple doesn't release the rMBP next week. I know Kuo's reputation, and I hope his predictions turn out to be true.

But I do have some concerns: (i) no SKUs for the rMBP have been unveiled so far; (ii) the processors that will equip the 13" rMBP may be released later this year; and (iii) there are no reported shortages of the rMBP, while the MBA is sold out in several places.

So, while I want to believe that the rMBP will be released next week, I suspect that this is just not going to happen... but, again, I seriously hope you're right!

I thought the Haswell processors were all released now? I know the desktop variants were.

I guess not. It's not clear to me either. Intel released quad-core and ultra-low voltage dual cores. But I'm not sure which exact models were released so far.

Announced, available September.

Would Apple really do that? Why? Would Apple run the risk of very poor sales of the rMBP from now until September? I don't think so. Makes no business sense to me. They've already took a hit with the iMac last year.

This makes sense.

Unless they drop the price significantly on current models?

Have Apple ever announced something then say the release is months away? Only thing that comes to mind is the white iPhone 4

Apple did that with the iMac in 2012. Apple introduced the iMac in October 2012, but the 21.5" model became available in November, and the 27", only in December.

But these products were redesigns, and not mere refreshs. In addition, Apple took a hit and sales dropped. I don't think it will do that again.
