Are you getting the next Gen iPhone?

I'm definitely getting it. :)
No, I think you mean defiantly! ;)

I will breaking my current contract (iPhone 3G, purchased July 11th with a 26 month contract) to get the new iPhone, no matter how much it costs. I'm sick of not being able to jailbreak (due to not having enough memory), sick of lag when opening apps (due to not having enough memory) and sick of music skipping (due to not having enough memory). As I'm sure you can imagine, I really hope the new iPhone has at least 256MB of RAM, of even 512MB ... If not, I probably won't buy it. But I can't see how they can cripple the next model like they've been doing so far ...

I'll most likely be upgrading. My iPhone 2.5G with cracked screen and dents galore is ready to be replaced. Here's to hoping the new iPhone has an aluminum/plastic back like the 2.5G and rounded like the 3G!

Like others have said, it really depends on the updates they make. If it's only minor changes, I probably won't.

Hardware wise, in my case I wish that the SIM was easier to eject, without having to have a paperclip or something handy. If my battery goes dead, a SIM swap gets me going in another phone. Or, right now, if I need to tether I can swap to a phone that supports it.

More flash would be nice too. My itune library is a little over 14GB so I don't have all that much free space on my phone anymore. I probably should just go to manually handling my playlist, but it is nice to just say keep it in sync.

Otherwise, software updates would be nice, either on Apple's side or 3rd party. 3.0 reportedly fixes some of the software level issues. The others are either in progress or unknown, such as a way to sync and edit word/excel files and something like Pocket Quicken that can be used on the iPhone and sync to/from Quicken on the PC. The Treo 750 I have does these, though I like the iPhone better for other reasons.

I'll be looking very carefully at other devices before buying anything.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

Yes. I held on to my 2G when the 3Gcame out for exactly this reason. IMO there is not that much difference between the 2G and the 3G, so I wanted to save my upgrade eligibilty for when I could get a bigger bump in features.

Well, will you? ;)

I'll be waiting. If there's nothing massive, I'll keep my 3G.

Personally, I don't see them adding anything major. I'll prob wait this one out...i mean the fourth gen iPhone is just going to be even better. I'm happy with a new one every 2 years.

If its really worth upgrading, and doesn't cost a fortune, I'll think about it, but a jailbreak would have to be released for it before I'd be able to get it.

The iPhone is, in equal measure, the best and the most frustrating phone I've ever owned. I got the 3G on launch day as an upgrade to my original iPhone and loved it for what it could do.
However, I was really frustrated by the lousy battery life and the little things it couldn't do and decided that I couldn't put up with it any longer. I then got a Windows Mobile phone on my "dormant" Orange contract and convinced myself I was happy with it.
Recently, I started using my iPhone again to test out some apps we've been developing and realised just how good it really is and once again fell in love with it, even being prepared to put up with charging it during the day to make it last until bedtime.
However, in the meantime we have moved house and simply can't get an O2 signal anywhere in the house, so I unlocked my phone and am currently using it on my Orange contract.
So, at the moment I am really happy with my iPhone and Orange combination and probably won't upgrade unless the new iPhone is available SIM free because I would really like to get rid of my O2 contract when it expires rather than paying for multiple phone contracts!

Not yet

I was late to the game getting my iPhone first Gen (Jan. 2008) and was 7th in line outside my local AT&T to get my 3G. I really can't think of anything that would get me to switch to another new handset. I think that Apple leaving out MMS for the first gen is both a kick in the teeth and a message to original iPhone users that it's time to get something new.

It's like having a Mac after the AppleCare has expired. Sure, it still works for you and sure, it has been great but apple can only support it for so long before it's unable to handle the newest computing tasks.

The first gen. iphone had what it needed to handle the tasks of the first gen. software. But like PPC, they are gonna get to a point where it will be be able to get upgraded and EOL'd.

I'll keep my 3G until:
- A new version of the iPhone offers a crucial hardware feature.
- My warranty expires and I need a new one.
- I get this one wet.

As I'm sure you can imagine, I really hope the new iPhone has at least 256MB of RAM, of even 512MB ... If not, I probably won't buy it. But I can't see how they can cripple the next model like they've been doing so far ...

Amen to that! I don't have an iPhone yet but am not looking foward to all the laginess that I've heard of over the past year or so from SO many forum members here and elsewhere. I mean, I'll get what I get and be happy with it but choppiness and lagginess really irks me, lol. Hopefully that RAM will get a healthy boost. :D

Here's to hoping the new iPhone has an aluminum/plastic back like the 2.5G and rounded like the 3G!

That would be AWESOME! The best of both worlds.

Probably not, unless it contains some upgrades that are mind-boggling. Like a pop-out car, tissue dispenser, things of that nature.

I've still got a year on my 3G contract with AT&T... how could I upgrade to the new model with a year still left to go? :(
