Originally pre-ordered the Ultra 2 to upgrade Ultra 1 as I like to upgrade my yearly. However, after careful consideration and review, I decided it is not worth upgrading. Hence, I canceled the preorder. This is my first time not upgrading my watch yearly.
I am leaning towards doing the same. Anyone knows how I can check my watch's battery health without an iPhone?

On the watch, Settings->Battery->Battery Health. This is on WatchOS 8.8.1 on my Series 3, but probably the same on later software. (Mine is still at 93% after 6 years of all-day use and all-night charging.)

I don't have it paired with a phone at the moment. The more I think about it, the more I lean towards keeping my 14PM and OG Ultra. Both the new phone and watch are unexciting at best- especially the new watches.

Certainly an S year in terms of upgrades I think..

There is already movement on the iPhones. I wonder if the watches are already in the US Or maybe on a ship headed here?

Apple Watches have had very minor updates since 2018, this year is no different.

It will be interesting what they do with the 10 next year. It is both a milestone year an expected design change for the AW (going on the previous cycles). Given that it is such a small device it really is constrained by it’s dimensions, battery size and screen hunger.

Nothing really changes on the iphone year to year nowadays except the camera (although if your life was saved by the satellite comms you might argue differently).

We may have hit the wall in terms of blockbuster features until some groundbreaking tech arrives.

Depends on what you define as major and minor. What would be a major update for you?

Since AW4 there have been quite some major updates for me: AOD, new CPU, new sensors, better GPS. Leaving aside the Ultra which brought even more major changes.

Just imagine Apple would enlarge their product release lifecycle from one year to three years. Would you still say an iPhone 15 Pro is only a small improvement from an iPhone 12 Pro?
Asking because my son is coming from a 12 Pro and the list of new stuff he is getting with a 15 Pro is truly amazing. From Promotion to Dynamic Island to AOD to significantly better camera to more speed to satellite SOS to whatever.
Sure, from 14 Pro to 15 Pro, the changes are not amazing.

I never get excited about smartphones as I'm an 'old fogey' so I'm seeing it from my perspective. Once I was able to surf the internet, use apps for banking, hold music onboard, take the odd photo etc. I was more than happy. I have an SE2020 and have just changed the battery and into it's fourth year.
The AW for me is a different story, my fave piece of Apple tech by a mile. I think if Apple released one every 3 years there would be a real wow factor but they make more money the way it is, which is fine as the decision of when to upgrade can be made by the user. I have a 7 and prob will get the 10, or might change the battery (82% health!) and get the 11.

True. And always think about AW users that are currently on an older watch as you are. E.g. from an AW6 to AW9 there is plenty of reason to update. More than for an AW7 user.
A 3 year release cycle would be bad for a lot of users therefore.
I am quite happy with the progress being made. Some year more, some year less. But there is progress.

I am at 100% battery health after a year. Neat!

It took me a while to realise that, what appears to be the main big feature for the Ultra 2 and S9, isn’t out until next month. (Double Tap/Pinch)

When can we expect the first reviews of the Ultra 2? Today or tomorrow?

Edit: last year's DC Rainmaker review of the Ultra 1 was released the Wednesday before public availability of the watch.

I am seriously considering the U2, I tried out the series 8 45mm and started liking it but thought it was slightly small for my eyes...I am used to wearing large watches from garmin anyway but the price stings ...still thinking about
I am making the same switch and I was able to sell my series 8 on offer up in two days.

Did you not watch the presentation? :D

Upgraded screen (brightness), on device Siri, additional storage capacity, upgraded CPU, upgraded neural core, additional battery life (in extended power saving).

Nothing there that warrants an upgrade from me. The screen on my ultra is already bright enough, I'm never away from a cell or wifi connection, neural core upgrade- so? Plenty of battery power in my Ultra 1.

I’m very similar, as a hobby photographer who does not carry a backpack around everywhere all the time, my interest in smartphones is primarily the camera, and going from a 3x fixed focal length on my 13PM to a 5x fixed focal length in the 15PM wasn’t enough to upgrade… and leave alone the Ti hype

For sure, I am not upgrading from my S8 to S9 either. That doesn't mean that those new features don't exist though. That was my point. The S9/U2 are obviously improved from the S8/U1.

My Ultra 1 from launch day is at 99% maximum charge. My iPhone 14 Pro is 89%. I am upgrading to 15 Pro max
