I wonder how many people will want to buy the 8 but if its too expensive will just get an 7/+ instead of the 7S/+?

That's my current plan, I'm using an iPhone 6 so will need a new phone. Depending on price it's going to be an 8 -> 7s -> 7 depending on price. I'm not going to spend more than £800 for 128GB.

I can get a refurb iPhone 7 with a years warranty and it will be in perfect nick as far as I can tell for about £350 perhaps less. There is no way I will spend nearly double that for the 7S. I'll pay up to about £850 for the 8 but beyond that its a bit of a piss take. I have waited 3 years, I can wait one more.

Who's doing 7 refurbs for £350?

Depends on what promos T-Mobile offers. Last few years it’s been free phones with trade in. If the next phone is $1k I can see them asking a $200 deposit with a monthly credit.

O2 are doing them on 24 month contracts but they have a monthly price for the phone and a monthly price for the contract. Within 14 days of the start of the contract you cancel the contract and just pay off the handset. This comes to £350ish. It was available for as low as £275 at one point but that seems to have gone.

I'll likely want the iPhone 8, but if it's too expensive I'll go for a Samsung Galaxy S8.

I want the best, and if I can't get the best iOS smartphone on the market... well, I'll go for the best Android smartphone on the market.

I think quite a lot of people might do the same, especially if samsung aggressively pursue these people with discounts and advertising. I think they could steal a lot of customers if they highlight the fact that their 8 is less than the 7S and that the 7S is basically the same as the iPhone 6 released 3 years ago. They could also point at the fact that apple is selling a very similar phone to the S8 but with a price tag of almost 2x so they are basically ripping buyers off.

Here in Canada we already pay over $1000 for an iPhone so if they raised over $1500 I think it’s way too much just for a phone and if it begin to be the future standard for the iPhone I think I’ll just buy the previous model when new ones is out.

You really think that loyal apple customers will go to Samsung? Not a chance. Apple has acquired one of the most loyal fan bases. If people want the 8 and can't afford it, they will either buy the 7s, 7, or just wait out. There will be no mass exodus of people leaving apples ecosystem. Just not happening.

I think people aren't as loyal as you think when they start feeling like they are being taken advantage of. Up until now you got the best iPhone for price X or price Y depending on whether you wanted a larger screen or not. Yes they were expensive but compared to the offerings from android manufacturers they were good value for money.

This year you will be asking people to spend Z for the flagship phone which is far more than the comparable android phone and if you don't want to spend that you are stuck with the same outdated screen apple have stuck in their phones for the last 3 years along with unnecessary bezels and most of the cool features of the iPhone X missing. Its easier to laugh off differences between android handsets and iPhones when you aren't showing people that you can make something just as good.

The average consumer is much much more tech savvy than 5 years ago and they are going to be very aware of what apple are doing. Plenty of them won't be happy and plenty will be unhappy enough to try an S8 or Note.

Ask a random person on the street the difference between OLED and LCD. They will probably have a tough time. They probably won't even know what these letters stand for. Most people just want a phone that works. They don't care about fancy bells and whistles. Or wireless charging. People on these forums are so out of touch with what average consumers want from a phone.

Thanks, I've seen the Refresh deals, the lowest prices are for their lowest condition ones though, I'm not sure I'd want a scratched up phone though...

Funnily enough I've been thinking similar, I was originally thinking 7s or 7 if the differences aren't that great, but I saw an advert for a special on the S8 and thought maybe I should consider that instead of going back to last years iPhone.

Hopefully the 7s doesn't see another price rise, like they did last year.

Installment plans muddy the pricing and that's how most folks in the US probably buy their phones.

$600 vs $1000 might be significant but when sales reps show it as $30 vs $50 per month, most customers will think "Oh, that's not much" and won't even bother calculating the lump sum difference.

I've had the 6 Plus for three years now so I'm ready to upgrade. I don't do installment plans and I'd be willing to pay $1k+ for what is rumored in the iPhone 8. However... Even though I'm a "lifelong" iPhone user I've been more and more tempted by Android over the last few years. The longer I have to wait to actually get an iPhone 8 the more likely I'll be to go with a Pixel XL 2 or Note 8.

I haven't met many loyal Apple fans in real life despite nearly everybody I know being an iPhone user. I'd be interested in how many consumers are 'fans' as opposed to people like myself who just buy Apple products because we like the experience. I don't have any loyalty to them and don't see why I should? They've had my money and up until now I like what I've had but I feel the business model is changing. If Apple really have shifted all their innovation towards their new top tier expensive phone and churn out mediocrity with their mainstream range, then I can see people like myself exploring other options.

At the end of the day even the 7S is going to be a lot of money and on par with competitor products, so why should we pay for something that is yet another 3 year old facelift device?

I agree here. Whenever I say the new iPhones will have OLED screens and wireless charging, most people haven't got a clue what the difference is. I think price will perk people's interests and when they see the pricing of the iPhone 8, it may just prompt them to ask why it's more expensive and why the 7S is similar again to an iPhone 6.

The non-techie iPhone users I know stick to the iPhone because:
1.) customer service at Apple Store is better than customer service at Best Buy or carriers (at least in my area)
2.) ease of warranty service and support
3.) ease of use and familiarity with iOS

They don't really care if they're getting the top of the line model. Display size is pretty much the only criteria. Granted, they're not serial upgraders, either. They just replace their phones when there's something wrong with their current one.

Personally, I'm sticking to the iPhone because of Continuity with the iPad but I don't really need the latest top of the line model for that.

Lambos are really expensive. They're priced out of the market. Most normal people aren't able to purchase a car over $400,000, but some people can. Most people can't afford this, so they buy a cheaper option. At the end of the day, most people just want a car that can get them to their destination safely. This is how the next iPhone lineup will be. The 8 will be priced out of the market. The 7s will be a cheaper option that will get people where they want to go. At the end of the day, people need a car to survive, and they also need their phones. Problem solved.

Most people buy coffee at $2, but some buy them at $5-6. It's 3 times the price, but people still buy them.

Same with the iPhone, it's might be 1.5 times the price of the cheaper version, but we're still talking about 1 - 1.5 grand. Most people can afford it, if not, they will pay it month by month by getting a carrier plan and pay $80/month.

If most people can afford it why are so many people complaining on macrumors?

It's really not that expensive for what it is, obviously this is based on price rumours but I don't consider it that expensive for a device that I will use daily, take great photos with (the iPhone 7 Plus takes amazing photo's) and so on.

There's quite a difference between those examples. A few quid compared to a few hundred quid is where deals are broken.

That's a very subjective viewpoint based on your own tastes. You've been able to justify the price increase and are convinced you are getting value for money but my iPhone 6S completes all the same tasks. I have to ask what the cut off point is? I'm lucky to be in the situation where I could easily afford an iPhone 8, but I'm struggling to justify it due to what it can offer compared to what I've already got.

That's the interesting thing here. $6 coffee every weekday for 52 weeks is $1560. $2 coffee every weekday for 52 weeks is $520. I reckon a lot of folks hold on to their phones for 2 years (they've been conditioned by 2-year contracts) so the iPhone might even be less expensive on an annual basis.

This is entirely subjective. Your cut off point is going to be different from mine as will the pros/cons list.

It's very subjective, we all do it tho putting value on things but to which extent it will defer from others, for example I upgraded from my iPhone 6 Plus to the 7 Plus because of the dual lens camera and bokeh effect, the iPhone 8 will only work out at £180 more than the £820 I paid for my 7 Plus, considering it's going to have an OLED screen, facial recognition that's said to be revolutionary a new design and so on, I personally think that it will be worth the £1000 that's rumoured.

I was a little more sceptical at my last upgrade. After 2 years with an iPhone 6 I was expecting a new design iPhone to be launched in Sept '16. When I saw it was a facelift iPhone 6S with a slightly faster processor, a marginally better camera, and a design that couldn't fit a headphone jack module inside, I felt cheated. Combine that with my carrier adding £240 onto an identical contract just to upgrade, I decided an iPhone 6S was the only sensible option. My decision was further backed up when I've directly compared the 2 iPhone models in the flesh and seen identical performance and camera quality many optometrists would not tell apart.

For me an iPhone 8 is a massive jump in price, and if I'm honest I haven't seen a single rumour that justifies such a significant price increase. It just irks me that Apple are happy to release a mediocre iPhone 7S to satisfy the lions share of their customers.
