Same here, and theres nothing wrong with that at all considering the circumstances. Anyone saying its "unethical" needs to get off their high horse and ****, its a goddamn cell phone.

This made me chuckle.

Just because it's "only a cell phone" doesn't make it any more or less unethical. You've also mistaken someone with morals for someone "on a high horse."

Help me understand. You're blaming people for having good ethics and morals? What's next? Blaming people for helping someone out of a burning car? Yes, it's an extreme example... but no matter how extreme or finite it either situation may seem in your eyes, it still doesn't change the fact that you're accusing someone of doing the right thing.

Do what you want, I don't care. Exchange the phone. That's within your rights to do, but accusing people of doing the right thing?

Talk about messed up.

Well I'll be on contract so I don't think it's a possibility for me but I would consider it otherwise. I was sold on the white one at the beginning but since it supposedly won't be available at launch I've embraced the idea of the black.

All this morality malarkey... it's just a phone  I can't believe people are imposing this "ethical stance" on it. Just because you've been waiting for a white phone there should be some magical, unspoken first dibs system? I guess it all goes back to this sense of entitlement some people feel when it comes to Apple.

If people want to and can return/exchange their phone they have every right to do so. Apple fandom sure is bizarre sometimes...

Want white and preorder 32gb white with best buy. I have a black 32gb iP4 arriving Thursday. I will pay full price for the white and sell the black when the time comes

I'm waiting for a white phone.

I liken this whole "buy black, return for white" business to buying an expensive cocktail dress and wearing it with the tags on, so you can return it later.

It's tacky.

If you buy black, use it awhile, then sell it and buy white (or pass it along to a family member who wants it), more power to you.

But to buy it KNOWING you have no intention of keeping it JUST to have iPhone 4 on launch day has to be one of the most MEMEMEMEME-centric things I've read here. Ever. And that's saying something, right there.

You'd think people would at least have the good manners to put a reasonable spin on it.

Example: "I really wanted the white, but I guess the black looks pretty cool. I'd like to have mine on launch day, and I don't want to wait. I'm going with black. If I really don't like the black, I might return it for a white one if they're out before the 30-day return time is up."

There. I've just given you all a graceful way to say you're planning to return your phone.

I didn't want a black, so I'm not in the same boat as all the people here who tried to preorder, but couldn't get through because quite a few of you ordered black when you have NO intention of actually keeping it. I have no dog in this race.

I just think it's fairly insensitive to gloat over your plans, that's all I'm saying.

*sigh*

Yeah, agreed. Returning for color choice is tacky. It's a total white trash move. The cocktail dress analogy is about perfect.

If I upgrade from my 3GS, I will wait until white is available, and I won't sell the 3GS until it's available because I *have* to have a mobile phone for work. I feel bad about these people who sold their phones before the launch only to find their color choice MIA though. I can understand why that set would feel justified about getting black temporarily. Still, I hope apple waits until outside of 30 days to come out with white because of these color switchers. People need to be taught a lesson about counting their chickens before they're hatched.

wouldn't apple know this is going to happen? and not want to deal with taking back all those 30 day old and used i phones to exchange them for white? so my thinking is they will not release the white ones until after your exchange period is over just to screw the people who bought the black now with the idea of exchanging it for white later

Apple doesn't care about black to white iPhone 4 returns. The amount of people that are going to go through the hassle of switching only for the color probably amount to less than 1% of 600,000+ black iPhone 4s that they sold June 15. They won't even bother raising the restocking fee. It's a waste of time. If exchanges do become an issue, they'll stop color exchanges entirely.

Yeah. That's pretty much why I hung on to my 3GS. I like to see what my options are REALLY going to be before I let go of my phone. It has become so integrated into my daily routine (I also use mine for work), that I cannot just sell it and wait 2 weeks for a phone.

If I had done that though, I would've bought black, but I would've griped about it. A lot. ;)

I hope they don't sell white ones until August or September, and yeah, I want a white one, so that tells you something right there. I can WAIT.

:)

Nope not this time, last year I bought the 3G in 16GB White and I liked it so much I returned it for a 3GS in 32GB White.

This year I am not thrilled with the look of the white kinda looks down right Fugly, but my opinion only especially that I usually get the white one.

I think the i4 Black 32 GB I am getting this year looks sleek like a Tuxedo on 007, because I can see that phone being in the hands of JB ;)

I was dissapointed with the way they did White this year, but maybe next time around the White will look better.

It's tacky to buy anything with the knowledge ahead of time that you're going to return it - regardless if you're returning it for a different model/color or just to return it.

It also, ultimately affect the bottom line. And rant all you want how big companies can afford it. At the end of the day, the consumer will/has "paid" the price.

I wonder how "fair" those that justify it because they think Apple should release both at the same time (or whatever their excuse is) if they were charged a premium for a white phone. Or if exchanges WERE only allowed for same make/model. Or some other tactic that would cause a hardship on them.

Somehow I think there would be a lot of cry-babies whining about THAT.

Life isn't fair. No doubt about that. But this is more (yet again) about people feeling entitled than fairness. People feel that they are entitled to WHAT they want WHEN they want it.

If you WANT a white iPhone. Wait. Otherwise - enjoy your black iPhone.

calm down bro

Well Softbank (Yodobashi Camera) just cancelled my order for a black one, so I'll just wait for white now.

That sucks. Did you have to wait in line for the pre-order? The lines in Japan looked awful. Did they give you an explanation as to why they canceled?

Newbie...

You missed my point. It's not fair to those of us that are waiting just to buy the white model if everyone who bought a black one went and returned it, and cried and said "I bought a black one, now I want a white one." Once you buy your phone you are bound by your contract, you would have to pay $699 to get another phone. Sorry.

I couldn't agree more. I'm specifically holding off on purchasing the iPhone4 simply because I want the white model. Those who exchange the black model for the white are simply detracting those of us who are waiting patiently for the white model to be released. Irregardless, I'm waiting no matter what.

I want a white one so I'm waiting. Sucks, but it wasn't worth the hassle for me to buy a black one for a month and then switch up.. mostly because I don't want to be at the mercy of whatever bs policy they may or may not come up with, haha.

I don't really think it's an ethical issue though. The people that are getting their panties in a wad over it are probably just jealous that they hadn't thought of it and now it's too late for them to get a black one, lol. If Apple or AT&T start to have problems with the exchanges, they'll make it more difficult/expensive for those that still want to go through with their plans. Not really any of our concern..

I am also waiting for the white. And if I can anyone can. I really hope the white gets released soon after the black and apple pulls put a new policy "you can only exchagme black for the same color, no switching colors". It would be completely fair, and totally awesome of apple.

Or perhaps some people are mature and know that if what they want isn't available - they will wait until it is instead of trying to make the system work for them by any means necessary.

I don't want a white iPhone. And I'm fine waiting for a black one as I had no desire to pre-order. When I don't have to "fight" to get a new phone, I'll go in and purchase one. To quote Don Roos, "That's how we do things on planet Maturia."

Only thing I would be upset over is Apple has given no timeline to when the white will come out. Some people have sold there phones expecting to purchase as said, but now are left hanging, maybe having an approximate time of release would make buying a black because it's needed or waiting for a white a bit easier decision.

So would it be ok for me to buy a new car - and since they only have one color on the lot, I buy it with the intention of when they do get the color I want - I return the car (with wear and tear) so I can exchange it for a brand new one in the color I want? That'd be cool, right?

Anyone who fully intends to do as the OP suggests is a very lame, selfish person.

If you want black, get it. If you want white, wait. It's not that difficult.

How is this selfish?

It's just like returning a 3GS after finding out the i4 is coming out

the return policy is there.

As someone who is sitting in the backorder que and actually wants a black one, for you to occupy 4 phones like that with no intention on keeping them is an incredibly selfish move.

Yes, and to further your thoughts, not only occupy 4 black ones but to also occupy 4 white ones as they become available. Incredibly selfish.

Actually - there is a slight difference there. There's a difference between buying an OLDER model and wanting to exchange/pay for an upgrade vs exchanging for a color preference.

The 3GS and 4 are different beyond cosmetics.

If you fail to see that, I can see how you fail to see how it's selfish.
