How was your upgrade?

I updated with the ISO, but my VM went from 20GB to 30GB!

Plus, I could only run it at 1024x768.

Will VMWare update Fusion 7 or will they force you into Fusion 8?

Thanks, I'll try that if nothing happens by tomorrow. Out of curiosity, during install do I need a Windows 10 key (I don't have one) or will my Windows 7 key do?
I directly updated from Windows 8.1 and it never asked me for the key. I believe it will simply use the key from your Windows 7 installation.

The one thing that absolutely sucks is that, since my new computer has only had Windows 10 on it since I built it, if want to reinstall on an EFI enabled build from an iso, I have to download Windows 8, reinstall it, and upgrade to Windows 10 from inside it to get my new key. And if I want a fresh install of Win10, I then have to wipe that, then reinstall it again.

The way MS manages their Windows upgrades has always been my one biggest bugbear with them. It's ridiculously convoluted. Why can't there be a website that allows me to input my Win8 key for the upgrade?

I have to say, finally MS$ got the install right. Downloaded it via windows update on my surface pro 3 and few reboots later i was up and running with zero issues so far

So I just tried to update and it failed, It was able to recover my Windows 8.1. I tried it again and it did it. I needed to reinstall my boot camp drivers as my FN Keys also did not work until I did that. I cant find my AMD catalyst app anymore, but my AMD is working as GTA V still performs well. All and all seems to be working very well. This was with BootCamp on a 2015 MBP 15in with AMD

However, I cant get my Parallels 10 to work anymore lol. It would not boot my bootcamp, I tried deleting the profile and doing it again but now there is no option to create a BootCamp VM..

I did the free upgrade on an older Dell laptop this afternoon. Once that was done, I did a fresh install of Windows 10. Installation went smoothly.

I haven't spent a lot of time with the OS thus far. I installed Office, Dropbox and a few other apps.

The new edge browser loads quickly. However, the built in ad-blocking is a joke. I do like that you can turn flash on and off. There are a few other novel features, but nothing to really brag about, in my opinion.

If you are used to Windows 7 pro or Windows 8.1, Windows 10 is in the same vain. More cosmetic than anything, from what I have seen thus far.

I am glad I have my Mac. I would not like using Windows 10 every day. It is good for backup use purposes and those limited programs that need Windows, and that is about it.

I upgraded but it won't activate and tells me my software licence is not valid! Windows 7 was activated. I bought it when I was still at uni under their educational discount. So not sure what's happening there.

Anyway, I might roll back. Although I understand the direction Microsoft have taken, I still find Windows 10 a bit of a mess, not as much as Windows 8. To me it's just too busy and lacks the simplicity of Windows 7. Performance is good though and apps load pretty quickly.

Activation server is busy and won't show activated immediately.

You can customise the UI to make it look less busy.

Is this any different then prior windows versions. We're talking about an upgrade and not a full version of the OS, so in prior versions you needed to validate the upgrade process.

Yeah, I know. Still annoying, though.

But, silver lining, considering how MS has set up Win10, this'll be the last time I have to play the previous OS version upgrade hopscotch hoop jump.

Oh ok, I thought you were pointing out a specific new issue regarding windows 10.

I have customised it, but it hasn't changed my view.

It is now activated.

I've installed the Boot Camp drivers and things seem to be better. It's a bold new release and my initial review was probably harsh. I'm starting to like it, though I still prefer OS X.

That happens with windows ;)

Errrrrggggg.

I'm surprised to see on the interwebs and here so many people haven upgrade issues with win10. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones

From what I've heard (which hasn't been much, admittedly), the problems mostly concerns those intending on doing a clean install. I found this handy little guide, though, like the article states, it's pretty convoluted.

Though now that I think about it, I wonder if I could install Win10 over Win10 using the upgrade package, converting my Win8 key without having to bother with the OS itself.

I spent about four hours last night and another hour this morning trying to upgrade, with no success. I hate this thing.

- I had Windows 8, which doesn't have the 'get Windows 10' icon. I had tried to upgrade to 8.1 several times in the past but always got an error message (after about 2 hours).
- Found out this was because I'm dual booting Windows and OS X. Unplugged the OS X HD and finally got the Windows 8.1 upgrade direct from the Microsoft app store.
- Still no Windows 10 icon. Check for Windows 8.1 updates but there are none.
- I download the standalone updater. It churns away for a while and the progress bar starts to move. Stalls 90 minutes later at about 30% and has to be killed in the Task Manager.
- Try it again. This time it hits 45% before dying.
- Check for Windows updates. Now there are 127 Windows 8.1 updates available. I install them all, then some more pop up and I install those too.
- Finally the Windows 10 icon appears, so I reserve a copy.
- Restart, but the Windows 10 icon is gone. Apparently it should still be there. The .exe associated with it doesn't do anything. The standalone updater now quits with an error message.
- Force Windows updater to start downloading the files via a command prompt. Hangs at 27% and gives an error message.
- Check for updates again but Windows updater is dead. It has an error code which I look up on the Microsoft site. This leads to an obscure tool specifically for fixing the Windows updater, which successfully brings it back to life.
-Restart the updater. Hangs at 50%...

GRRRAAAHHH! This is the worst user experience I've ever had in any piece of software. I've updated OS X countless times with no problems, but it's taken me more than a year just to get from Windows 8 to 8.1.

This must be why they allow 12 months to claim my free Windows 10 upgrade.

I upgraded from Windows 7. Downloaded the ISO and burnt to dvd. No issues at all.
