Agree, but don't you think Apple went this route because of the realization they had a dwindling number of software apps being developed for their platform?
By claiming it can run the whole iOS library of apps, it gives them that immediate boost -- even if in reality, it's not all that useful for people in most cases.
Dwindling? Mac market share today takes old school Mac share to the woodshed. That the transition was so quick for major developers confirms this.

So glad I moved from Windows to Mac when M1 Macs became available! There wasn't a single thing that I thought was good about today's presentation:
- Lipstick on a pig. I bet outside of the taskbar and start menu those ugly Windows 95 UIs will appear.
- Why would i want to run Android apps on Windows? They will not be optimised in anyway and have little or no intergration with the OS.
- nobody is going to be organising their social or family life through Teams!
- Not a single mention about the built in calendar app, contacts of file explorer. All things that were in need of a serious upgrade.
- I do not want MS to be harvesting my data to give me a poorly curated feed! Why would I take a break from work to get inspiration from a news feed?

I do not think so.

macOS 11 was unveiled one year ago. macOS 12 was unveiled this year. Should Microsoft want to catch up in terms of numbering, it would have already released Windows 11. Plus, Microsoft releases a Windows version with different numbering every 5 years or so, while Apple releases a new version of macOS every year. There is no way Microsoft would ever keep ahead if it keeps its release schedule.

Plus, Windows has a market share of over 90%. Windows is widely used by companies that need the kind of support and compatibility it offers, and consumers who would never be able to afford a Mac.

Microsoft is probably not worried about macOS.
yeah good shout, my bad. It was just a thought.

for me, the only good news that came out of the announcement is the direct SSD to GPU so that games can load faster. maybe a year ago, linustechtips made a video comparing sata ssds to nvme ssds and found no noticeable difference between load times. this was due to a CPU bottleneck.

maybe the android app thing will be nice but i don't think i'll really use it

Totally agree! Just moved to macOS for the first time after being long-time Windows user. And absolutely loving Big Sur and M1 hardware. The ecosystem of how everything ties in together is extraordinary. Windows is nowhere near this experience.

Looks like a mix of ChromeOs and Mac Os, so far it looks nice and clean. That Android support is going to directly hurt ChromeOS sales though, there basically no longer a need to get them anymore.

Except you have to pay the MS tax for software and more for hardware, not to mention its not the play store but Amazon. Chrome OS will be alive and strong i feel. Not sure what MS was hoping for here other then to try and be Chrome OS but a lesser version...

so i am going to assume that windows 10 ARM was only intended for tablets and that microsoft has no interest in supporting apple silicon? it would make sense because supporting apple silicon = more people buying mac = more people using mac os = decline of windows in the long run.

I hope they do a better job than Apple making iOS apps available on macOS and they make ALL the apps available, not 10% of them.

I can imagine myself running Windows virtualized on my MacBook so I can run an Android app on it, because Apple won't let me install the iOS version.
You’ve been able to run Android apps via Bluestacks for almost a decade on both Mac and windows.

Guess I'm the only one to actually watch the keynote. It was a direct attack on Apple and anyone on this site should watch it because you will catch the jabs pretty easily.

Microsoft store will charge ZERO commissions if a developer wants to bring their own commerce back-end to sell their apps on the Windows Store.

Multiple stabs at user and developer choice.

Jabs and misses. How does this help the end users privacy/security of their data? This does nothing but promote even more fraudulent activity. Google apps + Amazon Store, + Microsoft software. this sounds like a fragmented god dang nightmare.

Yes because MacOS, so secure. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/19/app...t-level-of-mac-malware-is-not-acceptable.html EVEN APPLE admits it is not.

What distortion field are some of you living in. Mind boggling.

We get it. Macrumors, Apple good, everyone else, so very bad. Why? Buh buh buh, bcuz!
Did you by any chance read past the headline of that article you linked? Because it clearly says that Apple thinks macOS is worse than iOS’s walled garden in terms of malware, not compared to any other systems.

Windows 11 and android 12 both look better than apples software times are changing
So Microsoft just center the taskbar icons and make windows rounded while Apple redesigned every inch of macOS while making it run natively on a completely different architecture along with a impossibly efficient translation layer.

This is nothing but a lipstick on a pig to keep Windows 10 from looking ancient compared to latest Apple computers.

Why can't Apple just allow mobile apps run directly on macOS instead of optimizing them separately since developers aren't interested and willing to support their mobile apps on macOS?
Apple does allow running without optimization. I have several that runs on my m1 Mac. The issue is that a number of developers decided to turn off making their iOS apps available for macOS, which is on by default.
