Windows 7 slowdowns

Running Win 7 Beta under Boot Camp, on a separate drive, quad-core MacPro. It works great until it wakes up from sleep-mode. Then it's unusably slow, w/ 100% CPU utilization, spread across several svchost.exe processes. Anybody else seeing this? 😕

I've installed Windows 7 on my Mac Pro. It works beautifully except for the fact that, once I've installed Bonjour, the app doesn't register. I search for it, it is nowhere to be found, in spite of repeatedly reinstalling it.

Does anyone have a success story with Bonjour? Any advice?

Bonjour is not an application. It's a service discovery networking protocol. You're just installing a driver.

Are you looking for the Bonjour Printer Wizard? It's in C:\Program Files\Bonjour\.

Wake from sleep is a crapshoot. This morning I had to re plug in my mouse and keyboard because they stopped working. MS is aware of the bug. Hopefully it will be fixed in RC1.

I just finished installing Windows 7 on my 24" iMac. Everything seems to be working fine. I installed Windows 7 through Boot Camp.

The only problem I ran into was the sound... even after installing all the drivers from the Leopard disc. I went to Realtek's website and downloaded the most recent audio drivers. Works perfectly now.

For the most part, I like Windows 7. I never used Vista, so the look is completely different for me. I do like the way that Windows 7 lets you customize using preset themes. There are so many different ways to customize your look.

I'm definitely not a fan of Internet Explorer... still. I've already had so many popups and confirmation just trying to type this post. The rendering of pages is also screwy.

Yep... I've already installed the second bug fix you mentioned. It works much better now! 😀

I've found Firefox to be much more stable and more powerful than even IE 8 on Windows 7. Even the Firefox beta is better than IE 8 on Windows 7. Give it a try if you're not specifically tied to IE for some reason.

woah! I'm downloading Windows 7 Beta now (with mindblowing speeds), but I have 2 questions.

1. is this version staying free? Because i'm downloading this Beta version now for free, and if I do not update or anything, than I don't have to pay, right? (don't want to pay Microsoft a dime).

2. Secondly, can I still install all the old games etc (like GTA san andreas but also software like office) on this version of windows?

1. Sometime in August you'll be greeted with a black desktop, a non-genuine warning and a 1 hour limit on anything you want to do. I think your ability to do things will be limited as well.

2. Yes. I've installed tons of Vista-compatible apps, games, drivers and services and they all work well. Sometimes the installers will be stupidly coded and will look for specific kernel version numbers, Vista being 6.0 and 7 being 6.1, and will not want to install on 7 because the version number =/= exactly 6.0. Stupid lazy programmers. Anyways, turn on compatibility mode for the installer and you're all set!

Okay, so a new problem arised. I downloaded myself windows 7 beta, but it seems that it is NOT a ISO file, but a ISO.DLM file. Disk Utility won't recognize that, if i want to burn it to a disk.

Is there a way to make this a ISO file?

Oh... I'm definitely not tied to Internet Explorer. And if you go to the "bug fix" link I was talking about, it was Safari for Windows. I have to use a Dell PC at work and I don't use IE there... I use Google Chrome.

I'm assuming you used some kind of a DownLoad Manager (hence .DLM). In that case, I assume your download didn't complete 100% and you're left with the Download Manager's temporary file which isn't complete, hence why it wasn't renamed to .iso and hence further forthwith hitherto why it doesn't work.

I'd try resuming the file download or restarting it...

Yeah... the only way you can download Windows 7 Beta is through their download manager. I agree that the download probably did not complete 100%.

After using Win 7 many times to poke and probing I found it t be more stable than Vista. Hence I ventured into installing games on it see, how powerful my MacBook can really be when it comes to games. I got the 64-bit flavor of Win 7 to take full potential of my 4 GB RAM.

First times everything went well and without hitches (CC: Generals & Zero-Hour). However, recently Generals started crashing. Windows would close Generals and slap me with a

Now that got me thinking, where could something go screwy. At first I thought overheating cause I had didn't have had a problem before. So I went in to OS X and used smcFanControl rev up the fan to 4000 rpm. Booted back into Win 7 and I could hear the fans going at it. Restarted the game played a moment and bam! same slap in the face. At which point I said, well, virus (even though I had never connected on the internet using Win 7). So I connected to the Internet, first went to Firefox and downloaded that, then went to Trend Micro, downloaded a trial. Ran the anti-virus, nothing found after 20 minutes (small partition).

So now, I am still in the dark. Oh and BTW, I haven't gotten my Win score fixed. I have everything above 4.8 except my HDD. It gets a low 1.9 score, I know there is a fix, I read here in MR that there was a way, but the OP who had the problem doesn't list how to fix it. Anyone else care to enlighten me?

Is Windows 7 worth it?

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro with the Penryn processor, and have Mac OS X Leopard/Boot Camp with Windows Vista Home Premium, and was just curious about the Windows 7 Beta. Is it worth downloading and installing over Vista or is too unstable? I don't really have a problem with Vista and all I do is play games on it, such as America's Army, Age of Empires II, and EverQuest. Is there anything Windows 7 can't do that Windows Vista can? Are things snappier on Windows 7? Thanks!

If you want to test Windows 7, then go ahead and install it. But if you're wanting something that's problem free and reliable, then don't install it. While it may run fine for weeks, maybe even month, because it's not finished and that there are still problems, you may suddenly run into a problem that could cause you to have to reformat or just cause you problems in general.

That said, if all you're doing is gaming, and all your games work just fine, I wouldn't rely on Windows 7 as your sole MS OS for gaming. I installed Windows 7 via boot camp, but I really don't do much in boot camp at the moment, and I always have Vista ready to go back on it, and I still have Vista installed on my desktop, which is my main OS (along side Mac OS X on my MBP). Windows 7 is mainly there for playing around with.

I think too many people have too high of expectations for Windows 7 Beta, and don't fully understand the risk with installing it.

Heres me using Windows 7 on my PC : View Vid My pc is 2 yrs old.. my resolution is usually 1440X900, but to make video size smaller I set it to 1024X768.. I've been using it for a few days, haven't encountered any major issues, I've used Microsoft Office, Camtasia, Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, & Illustrator.. have been downloading torrents, listening to music, watching movies.. But Firefox did crash on me twice, but other then that seems fairly stable even for Beta..

The Nvidia notebook driver. Even in its beta state it's very stable/fast.

I have an early '08 MBP and I just installed Windows 7 x64 using Boot Camp. Everything works great except from the fact that I feel the laptop to be much warmer than it was when I had Vista installed. Has anyone else noticed the same thing?
