was disappointed to see apolo mess up in the semis of the 1500 speedskating last night. how many other events is he in? is that considered his best?

watching the flying tomato own the others was impressive... funny how much dumb drama nbc tried to stir up acting as though he "almost" missed out on qualifying.

Amazing. The goals just never stopped coming.

Go Canada Go! :)

i thought it was rather pathetic, actually.
they should have stopped playing hard much earlier than that. no reason to unnecessarily humiliate the opponents.
going ahead to score with one of your opponent down on the ice because of a hard body check, and this when you are already up 6/7-nil?
very sportswomenlike...

Oh that is the truth about NBC trying to cause a drama fest over like one of Shaun's only falls in his entire career practically...Shaun is SO absolutely AMAZING that he could probably do the run with his eyes CLOSED and still have the highest score!!! NBC loved talking up all the pressure though (Shaun did admit that he had not been that nervous in forever)!! And he did get emotional at the end of it all when he looked at all his family!!! :) Great moment and that is why I cannot wait to see Hannah and Gretchen win tonight too!!! :)

does anyone know where I can watch anything LIVE from the US, TV (cable) or web (Mac)?

every olympics I get annoyed to the nth degree because NBC or whomever only shows selected bits at ridiculous delays.
I don't care about the background sob stories. I want to see the athletes compete, when they compete, not half of them 12 hours later, when the entire world already knows the results.
Show them live already!

Well as much as I have told myself that I am ruining it when I get the results before watching in the evening, I still cannot stop myself from checking constantly to see who won.

Now I DO ENJOY the background stories about the athletes----its SO inspiring to me and I have to say that I have a better outlook on life right now after watching my favorite riders compete in the Olympics. It always makes me realize that I am wasting my time just doing things that I don't have any passion for. I haven't felt this much inspiration in about 3 years (when I was all set to move out west before a terrible car accident happened to my boyfriend). But now I am ready to move on and start over again personally and professionally, and hopefully surround myself with like-minded "POSITIVE" influences on my life! Not to mention how happy I will be to be in the middle of the most beautiful scenery like the Rockies or Sierra Nevadas and get the opportunity to snowboard 9 months out of the year! :)

US TV turned me off actually watching the Olympics when the various networks insisted on things like Katerina Witt and Alberto TOmba meeting each other.

In hindsight, I think watching the Calgary games on TV was like my sexual awakening. Katarina Witt just seemed so much more appealing than the other skaters. :D

Of course, the drooling Homer "Mmmm, forbidden Communist babe....." factor didn't hurt.

i guess it's more because of popularity reasons, just like softball and baseball had to go as well (or "shooting on running deer" ... yes that's no joke)
look at germany alone where skijumping pc games hit the charts in top10 in the past ... yet no interest in female ski jumping

Pretty much everyone in the Olympic business knows that baseball and softball are going out because they're American sports. If it was a matter of how many countries participate in the sport, others would be eliminated before baseball.

Nice to see that we got snowboarding into the Winter Games though, so the U.S. actually shows up near the top of the medal count now.

what's with all the NBC hatin'? i mean cmon' i think they do a fine job of covering the games.. yeah the commentary is kinda weak but still..

It's not hatin' when NBC really does suck. We get very few live events, and even the taped segments are sandwiched between the lame stories about how some athlete promised his/her mom on her deathbed that someday she'd win the gold medal in biathlon. It makes you gag.

Geez, I don't know what athlete you are referring to, but for the ones that have FANS (like me with Gretchen Bleiler) any footage or interview about them is cool with me!!! I have been watching and reading about Shaun White, Danny Kass, Gretchen, Hannah, Kelly Clark for years now on snowboarding DVDs, magazines and all the competitions, etc.! They have a passion for snowboarding and they rock at it, period! :) The more about them working hard at being the best, the better in my opinion!

look at google's logo today, i love it! it's all fun to watch (the winter olympics) but the snowboarding does have a soft spot in my heart i guess. :)

anyway, go google! :D

but wouldn't you have liked to watch them competing LIVE, without knowing already the results? and wouldn't have you liked to actually see the entire competition, not just the top three+american athletes? what about the fans of the other athletes? they get nothing.

what I don't get is why THEY don't get that they could show the live events when they occur AND replay selected bits at prime time, with all the pathetic story lines they wish to cram in for the people who dig that stuff.
is it just because so they can cram more ads in? they could have two time slots to show ads instead of one!
I am sure the live broadcast of the men's downhill would have pulled in pretty good numbers, even at an awkward hour (to me that's actually part of the appeal), especially if you consider that they have three channels they can use.
The live feeds are there, as almost every other country are showing them, and they already paid for the rights, so what gives?

Don't you have 'interactive' in the US that they could show live coverage on?

In the UK, the BBC have the rights to show the Winter Olympics.

Currently we have it live on the internet (if you have a UK IP address) and shown in 3 hour shows on BBC2. However, if you have digital TV, regardless of what time it is, you can go into the interactive screens on the BBC channels and choose to watch the Olympics and pick the sport that you want to watch. Currently, you can watch regular BBC2 which is some wildlife show, or watch live luge, icehocky or speedskating.

When there's nothing 'live' on, they show highlights of earlier events or breakdowns of what the different sports involve.

Hoping the American luge woman is OK? She crashed off the barrier and appeared to be unconscious and dragged down the track.

I am sure they "could" show live coverage in many ways.
They just don't.

every time is the same. the worst was in sidney, when they were showing stuff >24 hours delayed. even events that they could have shown live in perfect time slots, they delayed by 24 hours (ie the 100 meters dash) so that they could cut it, crop it and splice it with ads and making it completely meaningless.
Nimrods.

Yes, but its my own fault and I really tried to not check who won this morning and wait until tonight, but I couldn't. I have no patience. I still enjoyed every minute of the men's halfpipe even though I knew the results yesterday and I will enjoy the women's as well tonight!! I guess the onyl way to solve the LIVE problem is get some tickets to the Olympics in Whistler 2010!! ;)

i think apolo is in the 1000. i'm not sure what his best is. he's also in a relay as well.

yeah, i knew when white didn't make it on his first run, that he'd have no problem making it on his second

how is it your fault? Are you the head of NBC? it would be trivial for them to show it live, as pretty much every other country has that option (and usually it's free).

they pay gazillions for the tv rights and than they don't exercise them properly

Why didn't the Ferrari make Olympic ring patterns?

I think Shaun White is cool. He's got great talent, isn't afraid to answer questions, and isn't yet spoiled by media preparation.

That Michelle Kwan tribute felt like an obituary.

Yes, you can always bet on him to WIN!!....and he definitely is a genuine nice person. Geez, I almost fell in love with him last night when he was so super sweet about his family right after winning! Now I am quite aware he is jail bait for me though ;) (I was just making that comment because he is an AWESOME snowboarder and seems like a very good person!) :) BTW, did anyone see him a couple of months ago get punk'd with the remote control plane??!!....it was SO hilarious!! :D

No kidding, and that guy at the end that said Michelle Kwan has won all these competitions, etc.. and then stopped at the BUT .....uhmmm let me fill in the NO gold part. Give me a break!
