Either Spotify or Amazon for me. The only music subscriptions that play on all of my audio systems. Currently using Amazon. Spotify maybe a bit better overall but pricing for Amazon Prime members wins me over. So far Amazon has met my music expectations.

What about fixing (for a good start) all the bugs in iTunes for Windows like the big fonts and images bug on Windows 7 (with a scale bigger than the default one)?

Apple just doesn't care if Spotify is bigger than them...

You do know ITunes running quicktime is a security risk too on 7 best to ditch it.

We were going to drop Spotify but then we got Echo with Alexa and that works best with Spotify and not at all with Apple Music. So right now I've got Google Amd Spotify and Apple Music. At some point I will choose between Apple devices and others and pare it down to two or one music streaming services. If I really like an album or song I still buy it outright to get full quality.

I find Spotify to be the superior service. Decent apps (with some delightful, optional gestures), public third-party playlists, much better recommendations. Spotify gives me a weekly playlist and four radios that update daily and they are all good. I like how it distinguishes the different genres that I am listening to and provides me a custom radio for each one. My Apple Music recommendations continued to be abysmal in iOS 10, they were shockingly bad. All the genres were stuffed into one playlist, filled with songs that were not matching my taste at all. After weeks of giving feedback (likes/dislikes) and focussing on particular genres, it would not get better.

I have the exact same experience with Siri recommendations and the ‘intelligence’ features of iOS 9 and 10. They are just not working for me, they are either wrong or completely missing the point.

For what its worth "Spotify Premium" is baked into our cell plan, we just get it as part of our two year contract. I am sure we count as subscribers, am sure there are a lot of folks in our position - there was no reason to turn it down. Given these deals with carriers I'd be surprised if Apple catches up in numbers.
Spotify probably still gets paid via the carriers for these subscriptions. And Apple is starting to make its own deals:

There are also other promotions like the 3 months free you get when buying certain Beats headphones.

It's funny how this company whine like a baby when Apple Music was released. They want a free ride to provide their service through Apple's platform. Their service was good before Apple Music but they're lacking some music that my kids listen. I do like competition but it haven't driven down the price yet. I hope it will someday. :D

Very impressive considering that AM is a default. This is like Netscape vs. IE back in the day and Netscape growing faster than (the default) IE anyway. Anyone opting for Spotify on iOS has to go to some trouble since it is not default, much as anyone favoring google maps on iOS also has to go to some trouble for the very same reason. Yet they are doing it anyway.

And these people seeming to take it personally just crack me up. Who cares if Apple is not #1 in every single thing? If it doesn't affect you- whichever service you like- what's it matter? Competition is good for ALL of us. IMO, Apple needs to feel some heated competition to be motivated to try harder. Are they as motivated in some of these excuses, spin or redirection is good enough to fool the base?

These kinds of threads make me think a big chunk of us would just love it if anything Apple touched caused all competitors doing that same thing to actually fold up & close. Do we really want a SINGLE provider of anything we buy? And note that when that has happened throughout history, consumers have never benefited.

Have to say Apple have done extremely well to get 20 million subscribers to Apple Music. It is a real testament to the strength of their brand because that App is terrible.

Gave it another try recently and was back using Spotify within a week.

Congrats. Their playlists are unbeatable and well organized and put together

Besides the AM app itself being terrible with a "My" section being a cluttered mess i cant use it because i have more than one Apple ID and it wipes all my offline music each time

But there is clearly a difference between individuals choosing to subscribe and pay, and those who get it simply as part of some bundle when they might well not have paid for it on its own. It would be interesting to know the retention when bundles expire but I don't expect to see that shared.

Not to the bottom line there isn't.

1 account earning 9.99 is identidal to 1 account earning 9.99. Regardless of whose pocket it comes from.

Neil Cybart (Very smart apple analyst) made a note on his podcast that "paying" includes people who got Spotify for free because they subscribed to the NYTimes.

Can anyone verify?

If that is the case then the number Spotify gives is not nearly as valuable as it would seem on the surface.

Wait. What? I can get Spotify for free with my NY times subscription?

As opposed to "Free 90 Days of Apple Music"?

Indeed. Trials are of course not counted in AM subscribers base.

One year of free Spotify Premium if you promise to stay one year with Vodafone (like I was offered some months ago) goes in Spotify's Subscriber's base. There are many, many offers like this (i.e. NY Times subscribers).

What does Groove have that Apple and Spotify don't? More indie artists?

More song versions and artists. 8M err 10M more is a lot. Plus they pay more.

OoPs now: Groove Music has a massive music library with over 40 million songs, more than Spotify, Tidal, Deezer and Google Play Music (left out Apl but than them too)

Ability to request missing content from within the app.

As an artist their pay-per-stream rate is slightly higher than Spotify (~$0.005 as compared to ~$0.007), no one is getting rich off of streaming but Microsoft seems to be paying slightly more on average than a few of the other big players.iHeartRadio, iHeartMedia’s all-in-one streaming music and live digital radio service, the first ever third party streaming service to be integrated with Groove

I think very soon we won't be able to do an "Apples-to-Apple's" comparison.

Once Apple Music features more and more original video content (like planet of the apps) is it fair to make a comparison Or is that like saying "Amazon Prime has X subscribers, compared to Spotify who has 50 million" when Amazon Prime does fast product shipping and video, too?

Sure, Apple Music will still be about music for some time to come. The TV shows will only be a carrot to entice customers. But do we eventually have to concede that Apple couldn't get more subscribers than Spotify just by letting users stream songs from iTunes?
Here in the UK you can get a year FREE subscription with the phone carrier, so I guess that's included in there figures, it does make you wonder what other countries are giving it away free

Tried Apple Music with the free trial, and ditched it before it expired. For me, Spotify has enough of what I'm looking for in playlists, and they really nail it with finding new artists that I might like. Spotify is also the reason I ditched SiriusXM in mine and my wife's vehicles.

I personally enjoyed Spotify's playlists much more than Apple Music. Also, the cleaner interface and PS4 support. The only thing keeping me on Apple Music is Siri support, as being able to play virtually any song without touching my phone is invaluable to me. Also Taylor Swift.

I'm glad the competition is fierce between them though. Should Spotify ever get Siri support (it won't though), I'd switch back in s heartbeat .

I drop Apple Music in November 2016 for few reasons, interface and the quality of music. I joined Spotify in June 2015 and can say it was the best decision. Even Apple Music it's okay they need to do some work, not crazy about the idea of adding shows or things like that. Too me it's all about the music, and interface and easy is to navigate, Spotify still best including great sound.

if Apple were to offer the ability to listen to Apple music without iTunes, I'd probably consider it too. but it's tie in to iTunes immediately stops me in my track
You can listen to Apple Music without iTunes. Apple removed the requirement to use iTunes for anything a couple of versions ago. Now when you turn on an iDevice for the first time, you sign in to all of Apple. You can subscribe to Apple Music, buy apps in the App Store, etc. You can even enable backups to iCloud.

You can also listen to Apple Music on Android. Last time I tried the Android app it was in dire need of fixes, but yeah, you don't have to be chained to an Apple-device to use it.

I totally agree with you on all the above but I ended up moving to Apple Music because of the AW app and ATV app. I still use my free Spotify account and use Houdini to move playlists over to Apple Music. Apple Music playlists are pretty terrible but the weekly playlists have gotten better. I still like the Spotify Daily playlists better - I have 6. I copy them over in bulk, add them to my library and favorite whole playlists at a time which really has sped up the learning so it isn't as bad. I would have loved to stay with Spotify but the Watch and ATV apps were important to me. The day Spotify releases those, I'll switch back in a heartbeat.

I should also add that I had tried Apple Music before and it was awful. Destroyed my library. But this time around, I basically started w/ an empty library, moved my playlists over and then added only the music that was missing or artists I knew they didn't have. So far it hasn't been that much. All *my* music is still in tact on a backup drive and on my NAS.
