Might be a silly question but do I have to have all the files also stored locally or can I use this like a hard drive in he sky?

Enthusiastic user decides to sign up for all the goodies in Apple One and over the course of a year, slowly fills up his iCloud storage to 3.5 GB.

A year later, unenthusiastic user decides to cancel Apple One services but is locked in because he's unwilling to downgrade to 2GB of icloud storage .
Watch Out! The 4GB iCloud storage is a trap!

Hopefully they'll make 4TB a standalone option soon. I'm using only about half of my 2TB now, but it's good to know bigger options are available.

Hence family plan shared, you can have up to six family member. So that's really ~650GB each. Home photo/video especially when you have kids. Also very easy backup solution for older parents. My wife alone has 800Gb of photo/videos.
I wish there were a way to allocate so much space to each member

Can you add any other Apple user that isn't already in a family and hasn't been for a year to yours, or is it only people on your cell account?

Apple One Family with 2TB (technically 2.2TB) costs only $0.01 less than Apple One Premier (minus 200GB).

Sucks for countries without Apple One Premier. Essentially eliminates 40% of the savings (unless you really DO need 2.2TB instead of 2.0).

Perhaps a dummm question, but the Apple website says "coming this fall"? Not available yet?

Does anyone know the answer to this? If I purchase the cheaper AppleOne, can I add 2tb storage to it? If so, then it's $25/month for the services I want. I'm not interested in fitness or news.
Yes. 2TB storage can be added to any Apple One tiers.

For $5.01 more, upgrading to Apple One Premier adds Apple Fitness+ (potentially great for Apple Watch users) and Apple News+ (meh in current form). I would be interested in Apple News+ if I can get "Sign in with Apple ID" that bypasses website's paywall.

No interest in this as a student. If they marked it down to match that price then maybe. Spotify + Hulu for $5 and 200 GB iCloud for $3 just makes more sense. Arcade is gimmicky at best. I'd prefer Apple Music but Hulu is better than ATV+ even with ads.

If only it could be possible to add external drives to iCloud.

Waiting to figure out how these bundles work with current annual Apple Music subscriptions.

Both?

The files start on your hard drive, in the iCloud Drive folder and (if enabled) in your Desktop and Documents folders. They get uploaded to iCloud Drive once you enable it. From there you can either opt to:

a) "optimize storage" in which case the computer removes copies of the files from your local drive if needed to save space, but leaves placeholder aliases so you can still see what's there. If you go to open a file it gets downloaded and then it opens normally. When you save a file, changes to it get synced to iCloud Drive.

b) turn "optimize storage" OFF in which case all the files are stored locally AND synced to iCloud.

I personally use different settings on different Macs. My main iMac has a huge drive and everything is available (and backed up!) locally. On my MacBook Air I choose "optimize" and let the Mac purge local copies of the files if it needs space. And of course on my iPhone I don't know what gets cached or not, but I do know that I can get to any of the 1TB of files I have in iCloud Drive, and it's very handy.

Glad I saw this support article because I ended with with 4TB and was just wondering what I needed to do: would my regular iCloud plan end on its own, or do I need to do something! I most certainly don't need that much storage!

That said, I also wonder if stacking Apple One Storage on top of additional icloud storage would result in also being able to use more webcams with HomeKit Secure Video?

Would love to know this as well. Would be nice to have a few more cams in HomeKit

Lost on how to do this. So I had a 200GB iCloud storage plan. I upgraded to Apple One Family, which includes 200GB. Now I have 400GB, so I want to cancel my "other" 200GB plan, but it doesn't seem to allow me to do that. Any ideas?

This is confusing! why not just chuck media purchases you already have under the iCloud Apple ID.

I have 2 one for iCloud and one for media purchases, knowing me when I sign up I will apply for the cloud storage to the media purchases instead of the other way round.

I think it would be better to migrate everything under one Apple ID and have done with it. keep it simple I say.
But some of us prefer to keep them separate - we have our reasons. At least there's a choice now.

Do you realize that some people’s iPhones are configured with more storage than their mbp. :p

When I added premier it removed the 200gb I was already paying for. I did not have to do anything.
