The only time I ever went to a midnight launch was for GTA IV and boy did I feel...awkward. Like really we're all waiting around while most "normal" people are sleeping just so we can get something a few hours early. I mean it's cool once you get what you desire but boy did I feel like an uber nerd.

I waited for GTA also! And before that, for the PSP launch. The Memories were great though .

I'll be upgrading from my 1st gen iPhone this time and I can't wait. Will be going into London to join the queue's in front of the Regent Street Apple store. Looking forward to the festivities!

who will be waiting in line the night before?

I dont know if i should.. i was waiting in my car from 11pm the night before and no one showed up till 3 am then another at 5,6 and 7am i could have slept all night and just came at 8 and i would have got an iphone ..so i am debating

..i will prolly be in line at 11pm night before again

This hardware upgrade is not going to be a big enough deal to merit long lines.

Go an hour after they open and you'll walk right up to the till and get one without waiting.

And no, they won't sell out. That's ridiculous this time around.

Would be great if they are available on same day as announcement, although the lack for elevator photos would hint towards the end of june.

They will not wait a month like they did last year. Having your best selling devise off the market for a month is not good business.

Ain't gonna happen!!

It will most likely be announced then available just like it was last year. They pulled it from the market last year because they knew there would be public outrage if people were buying something then a week or two later a new version was released.

They have established a pattern now, just like new cars being released. People can't complain in mass now like the did then.

I'd feel the same. I'm never going to wait in line for anything. I remember when the iPhone was first launched in the UK, I work in a shopping centre and my store was opposite a Carphone Warehouse. About 5 people queued up and the staff let off party poppers. Everyone looked awkward. Could have been 'cause there was only 5 of them though.

Since Apple and ATT are selling the 3g on their websites and shipping them to you, what do you think the chance are of the new phone being sold online right off the bat? If they do I think it will appeal to more people instead of waiting in line. It gets sent to your door when they have one and you can activate it on itunes anyway. I think it would be nice if they sell them online from the start, but being Apple/ATT I'm not going to hold my breath for it to happen.

i have always drempt about waiting in line for an iphone, but alas, i cant.
but the moment there is a Verizon iPhone, u better believe im there waiting.:D

Actually that sounds really nice. :)

Not in the sweltering heat of July. :(

I think the biggest issue with last year's launch was just the lack of clearly defined purchase restrictions and the lack of stock. Whether this was done intentionally (to drum up demand) or intentionally, the sad fact is, last year Apple didn't have multiple competitors that have already played a certain percentage of catch up and a global recession in full swing to deal with.

I think we'll be able to determine how Apple will launch their new iPhone after Sprint/Palm take a turn.

Not necesarily. Because the iPhone was unavailable for months before the release of the 3G, most would-be buyers simply waited AND Apple eliminated the possibility of returns once people saw the iPhone 3G. If Apple there is no such gap this year, Apple will have to take the returns (which will happen after people see the new model) and refurbish them and resell them at a steep discount.

but as someone said earlier. The pre will be released this time.. and any Wouldbe iphone buyers might get the pre if they dont want to wait for the iphone.. so apple may release iphone a week or two after wwdc to make sure people are buying an iphone and not a pre

And why in the world would you think otherwise?

There obviously is a new iPhone because they were buying new chips, there has been lots of rumors and I think you pretty much know why.

I don't want there to be a new iPhone because I just bought one a few months ago.

yeah that is YOUR fault .. there have been rumors for more than a few months about a new iphone.. so you should have known and NOT bought a 3g.. but you couldnt wait and that is YOUR fault that your impatient and you wont have the best phone out there.. so i cant wait to get my new iphone.. i hope your 3g is going to be good.. with slower processor.no video recording and all the other nice features

Why be so rude? I wasn't rude to you - I was stating when I bought my iPhone and I just said 'I wish there is not a new iPhone' - your comment is rude and uncalled for. Who said I was impatient? I bought my iPhone and I love it.

That's like me saying "I hope your iPhone breaks and you have the worst customer service ever from Apple" - that's damn right rude and I wouldn't say that.

I now know what you are like - and I couldn't be assed with people who are rude and have no respect for others.

JDee - you should be fine. If you want the new iPhone, all you have to do is sell your current iPhone on eBay, jailbroken (and/or unlock) and I'm sure you'll make enough money from your iPhone to purchase the new one at full price. So, you really aren't as f..k as you think, or others say you are.

Does anyone think that this iphone will be sold online through Apple and/or AT&T with the in home activation right from the start to try and increase sales? Or is it going to be like the 3g again where you have to go into a store?

I could active my iPhone over iTunes with my computer?

I'd bet on that, unfortunately.

That was a measure put in place to prevent peeps from buying the phone without activating and re-selling it unlocked, like the first-gen.

I thought it was a beautiful system (easy and a time-saver for a current AT&T customer like me) - but I can see how easy it was to take advantage of. If there was simply another way to guarantee the phones would have to be activated on AT&T no matter what, then I could see that procedure returning.

I just think it would be a good idea to sell them online so people would rush the stores. It just adds another outlet to sell the product. Although I would go to the store so I wouldn't have to wait for it to be shipped.

... I think Apple is going to get this phone out ASAP (due to the Pre). Apple can't be sitting on their hands as people buy the Pre instead of the iPhone, just because the iPhone wasn't available at the time. People are fickle and impatient. They will buy stuff that is available that second just because they can't wait.

The Pre is a non-issue.

- The two phones are on completely incompatible networks. Most people can't switch phone plans on a whim due to contract lock-ins and/or cell coverage.

- And there just won't be that many Pre's available in June. Palm will try to play the same game as Apple, limit supply so that they can use TV coverage of the people waiting in lines for free publicity. Probably suits their CFO just fine, because they don't have the cash position to risk on building up a huge inventory (like Apple could).
