Would you rather spend $$$ for fix the screen because let’s say your daughter, son, brother or whatever accidentally knocked it over or only pay the service fee of $100 or whatever it is for a broken screen replacement for a MacBook Pro ?

I get what you're saying, but also remember everyone has their own situation. In ~24 years of owning many different laptop computers I've yet to break a screen or suffer any other accidental damage.

Exactly, my macbook pro died because my cup randomly shattered (it was cold and my drink was cold) otherwise it was completely fine after I owned for it nearly 3 years. I've owned an iPad for 6 years and never even had a noticeable scratch. Never cracked any of my phones either.

I think I am more or less convinced to buy a 15 inch model right now. I really need a Mac and the 13 doesn’t make sense, financially or otherwise.

According to the 15’s Geekbench score, it should last me for at least 2-3 years. And I am definitely getting it with AppleCare to take care of any keyboard problems.

Am I making a huge mistake here?

I got the 15 inch 2017 model. Its my favorite laptop ever. Though, I haven't yet experienced any keyboard problems.

I get that but just generally smart to buy Apple care plus just in case you ever break your laptop. Cheaper then paying out of coverage

Base model 13” rMBP is available at Best Buy now for $999. $949 with student discount.

Exactly, other providers also stand by their product with 2-3 years warranty. My latest notebook came with 3 national and 2 year international warranty direct from the manufacturer.

AppleCare is just yet another add on with Apple, now virtually mandatory due to a designs that by far serve Apple more than it's customers. $700 to replace the keyboard is plainly ridiculous and a testament to Apple's arrogance and poor design...

A 3 year warranty!? Holy crap which manufacturer offers that?

Asus, I was surprised myself, especially with the first two years as international warranty, hopefully a trend that will catch on and end these extended warranty scams. When I bought a Surface Book in 2016 that also came with a two year international warranty too.

Are you in the US? All the ASUS laptops I have seen are 1 year, and looking at the Surface warranty that is 1 year as well. Did you maybe get a special promotion?

No I'm predominantly in Asia, nor does Asus have any legal obligation to provide such lengthy coverage. Far as I'm aware the Asus is standard coverage, when I registered the Surface Book Microsoft acknowledged 2 years international coverage automatically.

We have an ASUS ROG Store here and the Surface Book was bought from a major national electronics retailer. The Asus was priced higher than the US, the Surface Book cheaper. The Asus interested me as it's a 17.3" that's relatively lightweight without too much compromise; Intel 8750H hex core, Nvidia GTX 1070, 32Gb Ram, V-Fast storage with full port selection.

I can only assume they do offer the longer warranty service due to it being in Asia then, not saying it's legally required but just due to market demands or something. Here in the US I have never seen a warranty for a computer of any kind from any brand that has more than a 1 year warranty. Actually for that matter I can't remember the last time I saw more than a 1 year warranty for any electronic device ever ;).

If I were in your shoes I would absolutely go with the Asus or the Surface Book over a MBP though as a built in extended warranty is a major selling point

Absolutely I bought both the Surface Book late 2016 and very recently the Asus, although aimed at gaming the Asus makes for a tremendously performant platform for work purpose. The performance is extremely impressive, with few drawbacks as long as one can live with W10.

That's too bad. I got it for $999 with no tax a few days ago.
Yah, the 256 is 1149 after student discount. I’m debating if I should go that route instead. Not in dire need of a MacBook, but with the gift cards and 10% off might be a good time to get one.
