I think any MBP that is $450 off * via Best Buy, and meets your needs, is still a smart buy. At that price/discount, you might not even lose more than a few hundred if you decide to sell when updated models come out.

*Assumes BB will run a super-duper-one-day-sale again.

That's good. Now, he can save $450 for the repair bill.

Timmy Cook said at the start of the keynote "today is all about software", so i assume at some point over the next couple days we might get some update specs for hardware.

Someday, Cook will open a keynote address by saying, “Today is all about hardware.” Be sure to mark that day on your calendar now.

Hyperbole much? I have a 2016 MBP, a 2016 rMB and two 2017 MB. None have had issues. Unless you have some stats that show there is a significantly higher probability of failure, I think you're just spreading FUD.
You don't have a problem UNTIL you have a problem.

There were people saying that the dGPU failed 2011 MacBook Pro 15"/17"

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 17" and it worked fine UNTIL the dGPU failed.

I'd go with the 2015. Brothers 2016 keyboard just gave up on him after about 1.5 years. I have a warranty on it, and i'm honestly considering fixing it to sell it and buy him a 2015.

I used to be one of the "2016-2017 keyboards aren't that bad" but I honestly believe they are doomed to fail now.

None of them... Best to wait for 2018 models unless you desperately need Mac now. We are at 364 days since the last release as of today and the average is 303 days. Wait it out especially with all the current models keyboard issues. You will thank me later....
that's why im buying a 2017 now so i can keep complaining about the keyboard at an apple store that doesn't have my computer in stock they'll be forced to give me a 2018 model :)

As Apple limited/deprecated eGPU support on OSX High Sierra and Mojave to Thunderbolt 3 capable hardware only - which the 2015 series unfortunately is not ...

... you are out of luck here already.

except my eGPU still works thanks to egpu community script that reinstated T1/T2 support... so no, I'm not out of luck yet

Not a single developer? At yet, many already have
Maybe but it does seem the consensus is that its a useless addition. If it was a killer feature that apple had hoped it would be, we'd see developers rushing to update their apps or create apps to utilize the touchbar.

There are plenty of big time developers / software companies that fully support the Touch Bar. I don't think anybody considered a function key replacement as a 'killer feature'....I don't, but I think its pretty good. I barely ever used my old function keys anyway.

None.

The 2016/2017 butterfly keyboard is a complete lottery: you never know when it will crap out on you (costing $700 + tax to fix). Mine broke 15 months after purchase.

I declined the $700+tax quote from the Genius Bar agent, walked into a Microsoft Store, and ordered a Surface Book 2.

That’s insane. But I’ve learned to buy Apple care.. but all is not lost, Apple will offer a repair program to get out of the now three class action lawsuits out there. When they do that you can get your keyboard fixed for free.

I laugh and scratch my head when people say, "Oh you should've bought AppleCare," in response to people with faulty butterfly keyboards.

When you spend thousands of dollars on a laptop, it damn well better be reliable and last a considerable amount of time. Having a part fail on the laptop within months or a couple years is completely unacceptable.

I think I am more or less convinced to buy a 15 inch model right now. I really need a Mac and the 13 doesn’t make sense, financially or otherwise.

According to the 15’s Geekbench score, it should last me for at least 2-3 years. And I am definitely getting it with AppleCare to take care of any keyboard problems.

Am I making a huge mistake here?

Exactly, other providers also stand by their product with 2-3 years warranty. My latest notebook came with 3 national and 2 year international warranty direct from the manufacturer.

AppleCare is just yet another add on with Apple, now virtually mandatory due to a designs that by far serve Apple more than it's customers. $700 to replace the keyboard is plainly ridiculous and a testament to Apple's arrogance and poor design...

That's the issue that bothers me quite a bit. Apple bills itself as a premium brand, heck they promote themselves as THE premium brand, far better then anyone else and yet people need to buy AC because of the keyboard. Even if the keyboard failure rate is lower then what many expect, its too high given that this is a premium product.
