Never worried,
last year I bought my iPhone 5S on the launch day in Wangfujin, the central mall of Beijing. A lot more people than anywhere else I suppose, but very safe. Security should be on par or better in the US I presume?

Never presume.

Don't worry.

Be alert and prepared.

And never be overconfident and naive that illegal means there aren't weapons out there.

Seriously?? LOL.

I'd put statistics of murders during muggings and robberies up against that category ANY DAY.

Really? I was mugged a few times over the course of my 30 years in NYC, but it never occurred to me that having a gun on me would have made a difference. Anyway they were kids. Shoot a kid for grabbing a briefcase? No way! I learned not to carry my housekeys in my purse. Everything else was replaceable and I never had more than about $20 and some subway tokens on me anyway.

Well I admit sometimes these accidental shootings can fall more into the sitcom category (unless of course you are the parent of one of the students in that chemistry class where the Idaho assistant prof accidentally shot himself in the foot in the classroom).

Right. You might be trained and prepared to do that. Kudos. But in my opinion, too much of the rest of the carrying crowd is not. This is how we end up with newspaper reports of stuff like accidental shootings by people carrying concealed weapons in fast food joints.
On what do you base your opinion?

It never ocurred to the muggers that there was no reason not to mug you, either. No deterrent? Easy $$. Of course they aren't going to kill you. You are like an ATM to them and they will keep making withdrawals until there is a reason not to.

Not trying to bash you, but you are lucky and should hope once these "just kids" grow older and bolder, they may take a LOT more than just your replaceable goods.

I sometimes have material objects on me and have to pass through areas that make me concerned about my safety. But an iPhone? When presumably I'm buying it at an Apple store in a mall, which is probably in a decent part of town? No, I'm not in the least bit concerned about safety.

Glock 26. Don't actually have my CHL yet :( but my fiance and I have already registered for a CHL course coming up in 3 weeks.

Concealed carry doesn't guarantee anything but it can be quite a bit better than not having it..

Unless of course you believe you shouldn't defend yourself and just hand over your phone to the "opportunity shopper". Because there's people that think this way, sadly.

Now who's fear mongering? You make it sound like we're back in the bad old 1970s, which I actually enjoyed a lot in the city. It's true that back then the cab drivers taking the long haul to Brooklyn late at night used to hope that if they were held up, the holdup artist actually just wanted money, or the cab...

We must agree to disagree. You feel safer with a concealed weapon. I feel safer when I don't think there's a possibility that some ill-trained person carrying a gun is going to whip it out and throw lead into a situation that either doesn't call for it or isn't likely to be improved by adding gunfire to it. We just disagree. That's okay!

Update: as to those teenage muggers, I chased after them and they got winded, being out of shape drug addicts and they took a break so the cops I reported the incident to a little later caught up to them. One of them did 4 to 12 because he cut me, and the other 3 to 5. I got my $11 and tokens back!

You talking about the shopper or the mugger?

You don't wear a seatbelt when you drive, do you?
;)

It's no different to buying any new phone, it's just that on launch day people will know what you've gone in for. I always take a rucksack/backpack with me if I'm buying something from the Apple store and walking across town with it, no way will I walk out with a shiny Apple carrier bag...

i know but it looks corny walking on the mall with a bag.. what am i, in high school? LOL

I assume you mean safe from somebody crackin' you on the nut and high tailing it with your phone.

All depends on where you live I suppose.

u know how people get mugged/jumped for Jordans while walking back to their cars?

~snip~

How many kids died in that shooting? Waiting...

Did you maybe miss where I said S I T C O M category?

If I were a parent I would have probably considered that the bullet could have hit a kid. But I'm not, and anyway it didn't.

You mean from the Apple store back to your car.
You know I'm always just a bit nervous when I do that and have some expensive gadgets in my Apple bag. I've never had a problem, of course I live in a pretty safe area. It's always good to walk with a group or bring some mates with you.
