with the way the PANDEMIC isnt going down, TOUCHID will still be useful in the next iphone release

touchID together with faceID

I find it funny that other users here said PANDEMIC will be over by late 2020, when we're 2021 and it seems just a repeat of 2020.

so it just seems that touchID isn't redundant in the next iPhone release

Touch id is useful if you don't wear latex gloves, which I see more than occasionally. There is no perfect biometric authentication solution for every situation.

exactly

so the more they have to include both

especially there are a lot more people who wears masks worldwide, than people who wear latex gloves.

Even though it doesn't work with a mask, I still prefer FaceID to TouchID. The latter doesn't work for me through the winter months as my fingers are either covered by gloves or too dry. It also doesn't work if wet or covered in hand moisturiser. FaceID seems to at least know I've got a mask on so immediately prompts for my passcode instead.

The only time this noticeably slows me down is when using Apple Pay in shops as I need to unlock and also auth the payment with the passcode. I've gotten used to it. With TouchID in winter I'd stab it repeatedly with my overly-dry fingers until it gave up and I had to put in the passcode anyway.

The solution would be to have both methods, but I'm not sure it's worth the extra cost.

If this carries on I'm sure someone enterprising will come up with a way to 3D print our facial contours onto a mask :)

knowing Apple and their adaptation, by the time that technology is ripe for them to use is 5 years at least.

yeah but it isnt always Winter and there are more than 50 percent Apple buying countries that dont have winter season.

having touchID doesnt necessarily mean ditching faceID

it's not illegal for iPhone to have both.

Oh, I agree multiple authentication methods are better than one. Apple however, can't just slap in more hardware without advance planning. If by some miracle touch id appears on the 2021 phones, it's because Apple planned for it, two years in advance (imo)

I love FaceID, but with masks still being prevalent for the foreseeable future, no matter where you are, and no idea how long it’ll be before we all get vaccinated, or how long a vaccine even lasts, I think Touch ID would be a great addition.

A bit off-topic, but has anyone else changed their passcode since COVID so that it’s easier to type one-handed? I changed it so that only 7,8,9, and 0 are used.

A good amount of this sort of discussion has been happening in a few threads:

This! I went from and iPhone 8+ to the 12, and while I like Face ID, I work in an industry where I wear a mask. The Touch ID was something I took for granted. COVID just intensifies the issue.

I dont Know about you guys but I try to not touch my phone when Im at the store. Then when I go to my car remove mask, sanitize my hand then use my phone.

I am an advocate for having both TouchID and FaceID in the next iPhone, I guess the iPhone 12 was too far in development for any changes but I think Apple needs to consider this with the iPhone 13 series and up.

1) Yeah, but where I live there is, and the post was about my reasons for preferring FaceID
2) I said that
3) I didn't say it was

If you'd read my post to the end you'd realise we pretty much agree :) If you don't think so, then maybe I didn't word it well, because *I* think we agree!

Well, we need to see the percentage of people that wears gloves + mask at the same time :p
But i agree, i would love to have both.

Looking a bit into the future, what about IrisID (https://www.irisid.com/) ? That would solve touch id + masks problems.

Masks might be here forever... Apple will have to tweek things.

Masks have virtually eliminated the flu.

I know its not easy to find the perfect biometric authentication solution, but not Iris ID, no way do i want any kind of infra red beams etc to be fired directly into my retinas.

This type of comment is exactly why there are so many antimaskers.

Companies are not going to invest in a long term solution to a temporary problem (mask wearing preventing FaceID). Especially when under normal circumstances FaceID is far superior and not at the mercy of the quality of your fingerprint.

Touch ID was best implemented in the iPhone 5 through 6S. Those phones had mechanical home buttons.
TouchID on the iPhone 7 and 8 sucks because the home button isn't mechanical - its electronic, so the home button doesn't work at all wearing any type of gloves.
The switch to the fake home button on the iPhone 7 and 8 was a major fail. The home button was destined to be eliminated soon after with the X, why ruin a good thing?

I agree it would be a lot more convenient to have both features. However, with the 12 redesign released, I just can't see Apple making such a big physical change to the device next year as implementing another authentication system along with FaceID. I'm assuming the iPhone 13 is just going to be iterative, where the internals are basically just swapped with same-sized but newer processors, 5G modems, cameras, etc.

well there have been a lot of leaks particularly those with more than 90 percent track record about touchID in the next iPhones, mind you those were planned PRE-PANDEMIC, with the PANDEMIC, that just cements the need for it

anyway, having touchID in an iPhone wont force you to use it and ditch your faceID

you still have your brain and freewill to continue using faceID.

So you prefer FaceID since it minimizes touching the phone?
No its not that. I love Face ID before the pandemic. Its fine with me now. It doesn't intrude with my use cases, I stop using my phone while I'm in the store its fine with me.

I can see for those who need to wear mask during Touch ID would be a welcome feature, but that's not the case with me.

EDIT: You know where I wish we had Face ID? On the Mac. I swear either its the lack of humidity but I can't unlock my MacBook Touch ID 30% of the time and I think because my hands are too dry.

My wife has sweaty hands and I swear its hilarious! Touch ID fails her 80% of the time. Its actually funny to see. Getting a Face ID phone was a game changed haha for her.
