I think Apple has been too arrogant to cut off touchid completely while many other phones keep a easy virtual touchid under the screen which I like a lot. I believe mask will stay for years even after COVID, so touchid would be quite convenient in many cases. It's so amazing Apple marketing dept is spending millions of dollars to do research/VOC while still not getting the true insights and actual needs from customers....
Why would anyone be wearing masks after COVID?

Nope it was having none of it. My normal mask is a dark green London Irish (rugby team) with club badge on it. Phone just said something was obstructing my face
Interesting, thanks for posting back.

At the end of the day I guess just punching in my passcode to unlock isn’t the end of the world.

Apple could just add an optional “face mask mode” to FaceID which performs recognition of just the eyes plus facial features above the nose with a disclaimer that is a less secure. A user would have to manually select it and accept the risks. After all, an extremely weak 4-6 digit pin (which can unlock all the data on your phone) is what most people use anyway. The PIN is orders of magnitude less secure than a upper face FaceID (I can guess what most people’s PIN is just by looking at the smudges on their screen corresponding to the numbers)

That could also be a possibility. Nice idea.

I thought the whole point of the PIN being the first security method you have to create is because it is the most secure? There’s no such thing as a false positive with a PIN; it’s either right or wrong.

Except anyone standing near you can easily tell what your pin is.

Yup, and the 20 top most common PINs are used by 26% of all users. Since it’s a 6-digit number most people use either a sequence or a birthday. Plus you have 10 attempts to guess it (and you can narrow the possibilities by looking at the oily smudges corresponding to the buttons on the screen so you if only the positions for 1 and 2 have finger marks then its most likely 121212)

I still don't understand why they don't give AW owners the option of unlocking the iPhone if the AW is within 80cm or whatever. If it's considered secure enough to unlock a Mac, why not the iPhone?
